Clarification on Server Location

  • It would be nice to have some kind of official confirmation about whether the servers used on the Scale test is all there is, or if they are going to implement regional servers, for example, here in South America, I've played with 260 ping, and it wasn't that bad, but it's hard to convince some of my friends on buying the game after it costing 90 USD here, and on top of that not having regional serves. I love the game and I'll be playing it no matter what, but some form of clarification would come a long way.

  • @calitzu I am also interested in this question. On a treasure hunt Ping is not affected, but PvP at some else's ship becomes unplayable.

  • @calitzu The servers will be hosted on Microsoft Azure, So i think it's pretty easy to get a nearest server from your country.

For your friends, you can say this : Scale test was probably made on US datacenter, Rare volontary send all players on US datacenters (maybe they run beta on 5 physical servers for all players) to simulate a release date (lot of people are connecting on same datacenter/server).

As I saw, for south America there is a datacenter in Sao Paulo, which should be avoid you a high ping.

  • would be also interesting to know if there is some sort of server interconnection

Scenario: Player 1 connects to an US server, Player 2 connects to an European server.

So if Player 1 and Player 2 want to player together will either of them be reconnected to the server of the the other player
    or
will both of them stay on the same server while the European and US servers are connected to each other.

I don't think there is interconnections.

I think game will act like this :

    • You connect to lobby (whatever region).
    • You invite your friends on a party
    • When you launch the matchmaking, the selected server is the nearest from party leader.

If you join your friend, then you join his server.

It's like all online games, 1 server is selected, if your friend live in a far away country he might be affected by the latency problems. But Rare can't do nothing for this.

  • @liebeerdbeer Thanks for the response, I think we'll have to wait and see, yes, probably there won't be interconnections, but that would not be a problem for me, but hopefully the Azure systems work as intended, thanks!

  • There isn't really any value in the interconnection. You still need one main server and at that point you have to balance the ping of the two players. Either it goes to one extrem or both get a mediocre ping if there if any server in the middle of them but interconnection is not able to change anything about that. The EU server would still need to communicate everything to the US and whether you do it or the server doesn't make any difference really that you can't solve better by better routing or server selection.
