Ship ammo types and naval combat weaponry

  • We've seen the solid cannon shot that's currently in the stress tests but it makes me wonder if we'll see other types of cannon ammo? Below are a few examples.

    1. Bar/Chain shot - Two sub-calibre round shot (a good deal smaller than the bore of the barrel) linked by a length of chain or a solid bar, and used to slash through the rigging and sails of an enemy ship so that it could no longer manoeuver. It was inaccurate and only used at close range. Two-headed bullets (angels) were similar but made of two halves of a ball rather than two balls.

    2. Grapeshot - An anti-personnel weapon, So called because of the resemblance of the clustered shot in the bag to a cluster of grapes on the vine. In one variation of this, the shot was held together by a coiled bar, and was spread by a fused charge in the same way as a shell. It was very effective against infantry.

    3. Shell shot - An explosive anti-materiel and counter-battery projectile, of iron with a cavity packed with a high explosive bursting charge of powder used to destroy enemy wagons, breastworks, or opposing artillery. Two types of fuses were used—impact fuses that detonated the bursting charge by percussion, and time fuse cut to length measured in seconds and ignited by flame from the propellant charge.

Also will we see things like the Boarding axe or Grenados?

  • @bloodfrenzy187 i hope they add something like this. Mast damage/sail damage would be amazing. Nothing better than a running galleon getting in the sail slowing down. Just to have a ball and chain rip the mast from the boat rendering it motionless. I live for moments like this lol!

  • Very early on before combat was revealed I really thought this game needed a deep ship combat simulation component, but there's so much else to do onboard, I really don't think so. Said it before, but I don't think sail damage works within the combat mechanic, and would just wreck ship combat overall. I'm opposed to anything that causes more repair than already exists. Something like grapeshot that's anti-personnel has some possibilities, but it would have to be well balanced as to not give sloops an overwhelming advantage over galleons.

  • Chicken cannon

  • @lucid-stew I get the argument against the sail damage. but grapeshot and shell shot would be awesome. Shell would be nice against skeleton forts later.

  • Yes!!! They need variation and variety to ship combat. This adds to horizontal progression in the game that you can spend real world gold on. You would need to buy different cannons for your ship and then have to choose which cannons you would want to equip on your ship.

  • @y0ujerk said in Ship ammo types and naval combat weaponry:

    Chicken cannon

I'd upvote this twice if I could.

  • @y0ujerk Every Chicken on your ship if that cannon existed.

  • This is a post I did on different cannon types. I addition to different shot types, I think it would be great if we had different cannon types.

I have seen posts regarding cannon shot types but how about actual different cannon types? Many people are wondering what kind of cosmetic changes they can make to their ships. Having cannon options would be a way to modify your ship but stay within Rares parameters of not giving someone an advantage tied to a special weapon or upgrade since this is more a strategic change. Like selecting what weapons you will load out your pirate with.

Cannons are basically identified by the weight of the shot it shoots, 42lbs, 36lbs, 32lbs, etc. what if we were able to mount cannons of different weights? Obviously the heavier shot will be slower with less range, and slower reload, but in close it would inflict much more damage. You have 4 cannons on galleon, you could go set all four with a lighter shot cannons so you could attack at range, or you could go with 4 heavy cannons and try and get in close and pound your target. Maybe a mix of both so you can hit at a distance and have the ability to deal more punishment in close. This would create some real tactics and strategy both in loadout and navel tactics when in combat and how you approach the enemy based on your loadout.

  • How would it work in your inventory?

Would each ammo type take up a different slot? Depending on the number of variations, that could take up a bit of room. Not to mention it means pirates able to load cannons for much longer before having to restock below decks, which may cause issues with PvP.

Or would you have to empty your inventory of one type of ammo before refilling with your desired type?

Not trying to bash the idea, just some thoughts that occurred to me.

  • @bloodfrenzy187 i want a pistol with multiple barrels.
