Windows 10 Fullscreen FPS capped at 60 while unlocked

  • Specs:
    i7-6700k OC 4.4 GHz
    GeForce GTX 1080 (MSI)
32GB DDR4/3000MHz Dual Channel Memory (ADATA XPG Z1)
    GIGABYTE GA-Z170X GAMING 3 ATX
    Native resolution 1920 x 1080
    Geforce Driver 390.77
    Mythical Settings
    V-Sync Disabled

I've noticed ever since the alpha I've been unable to unlock my FPS while running Fullscreen even with the framerate cap disabled.

When trying the windowed setting my framerate sits around 110-120 fps on mythical setting but when switching to the native fullscreen the FPS caps at 60 with the framelock turned off. I've tried setting framerate cap to 120 and 90 while in fullscreen mode and still the FPS sits at 60 FPS.

I spent about 30 minutes every new patch/beta/stress test to resolve this with no success.

I've been looking for similar posts on the forum to see if others are having the same issue but some are saying the "soft-cap" has been resolved. (Which it hasn't in my case)

Is there an simple explanation as to why this is happening or a logical solution that has escaped me to correct this?

  • Completely disable vertical synchronization in the video card settings

  • @introoper Looking at my NVIDIA control panel, my 3D settings currently have vertical sync set to "Use the 3d application setting". Considering I have the V-sync turned off in Sea of Thieves it should still be off.

I switched it now to "Off" in my 3d settings. I'll have to test it again next stress test to see if that worked.

  • @stellarsacia for me, only this method worked, before this FPS was 60 with drops to 40, after - 90+

  • @introoper Thank you for the advice, I was completely out of ideas.

Hopefully this clears up the problem for me as well.

Very much appreciated! I'll let you know if it worked when I'm able to test again.

  • @introoper I'm positive it worked! I started up Sea of Thieves and the application is running at 260+ FPS at the title screen.

When I reverted my Geforce v-sync setting back to "Use 3d application settings" it was again locked at 60 FPS at the Sea of Thieves title screen in game.

Hopefully this helps others looking for a solution!

Completely disable vertical synchronization in the video card settings

  • I have the same problem but changing the nvidia settings hasnt done ANYTHING for me... its extremely frustrating and i cant figure it out!

  • Same issue. Disabled FPS lock, V-sync both in game and on my grpahics card, still locked at 60FPS. Help! Game is not enjoyable when I play games at 150+ normally.

  • Same issue. Game is sometimes running at whatever fps cap I set it to, 95% of the time it runs at a capped 40 fps.
Running a GTX 1080ti and it does not really matter what graphical settings I set it to. It's almost always capped.

  • Has anyone figured out a fix for this ? I'm running a 1080ti and I can't get over 60fps with my 120hz G-sync monitor
