Is there a difference between different shovels, blunderbusses, swords, compasses aside from their look?
Do explosive barrels detonate when a ship swims onto them?

The admiral bucket doesn't leak water when bailing, the admiral and gold compass don't go as crazy when in a storm. Those are the only differences I've noticed. The admiral lantern used to be way brighter than the standard but they toned it down. Using barrels as mines works great if the chasing crew isn't paying attention. Also good for trolling crewmates.
There is not any difference between items of the same type.

Yep! That is the exact situation they showed in the video when the announced the gunpowder barrels.

All of the item descriptions are just for flaire
None of the buckets leak, the compasses still spin all the same, it just depends randomly during a storm, and shovels dont dig faster or provide increases in gold or chest rarities.
Only item differences are lanterns with their different hues of light, and instruments playing more in tune with the non junk versions.
@scheefinator I have witnessed both occurrences with the bucket and compass firsthand in a storm. Buddy of mine even flipped his compass so I could see it happening and I showed him my gold hoarder compass not doing anything. If you hold the standard bucket long enough the water in the bilge doesn't go down as fast. Sorry, no captures to share.

My default (cracked) compass didn't go nuts in the storm. I pulled it out to use when the onboard one failed.
