Please let us choose a character name when we first log in to the game.

  • So right now, sea of thieves is using our xbox name, which is in my opinion kinda bad and confusing.
There are a lot of people who are using xbox and not playing sea of thieves, and locks away common, even uncommon names, which forces us to use strange names with numbers etc.
My name is not even a common character name, but i use it everywhere i play, but even my name is already taken, even if i add my favourite numbers to it...
So my suggestion is to let us choose a nickname when we first log in to sea of thieves, and attach it to our xbox name, so we get to choose from more names, maybe even without numbers in it.
Ofc you can add things like paid name change if you get bored of it after a while.

    Opinions?

Agreeing here. I don't have an Xbox and yet I made an account a long time ago. Seeing how my regular name was taken, I used one of the suggestions (which is why the Shade part got added), assuming it was only an account name and not something I had to use in any games. Seeing how important the social aspect of this game is, it would be nice to represent ourselves in the best way possible, without having to add strange words or numbers. Being "DavyJones17" doesnt really feel right in SoT. I agree it would be a good thing to be able to pick or at least change your name when creating your pirate. Without having to pay 10 dollar to change your Xbox gamertag.

  • Nope, this is not going to happen. Changing your name may feel like a good idea but with the Xbox live being so deeply connected it would cause a lot of issues, with reporting, abuse, friends, spoofing, etc...

If you want to change your GamerTag follow this support article, although I have heard of that causing issues with accessing this form and early access, so be warned.

  • gamertag is deep into our blood in Xbox. You will get used to it. don't worry

  • I've not seen any pirate with a proper in-game name other than myself.

This last class test, I was fortunate enough to crew with a chatty pair of pirates. One of them asked me if I joined Xbox Live just for SoT.

    Indeed I did.

  • I think there is a certain ease to using gamertags for inviting people to your parties, or adding them as friends when you meet them online, etc. I guess you could have an alternate name, but I would definitely like to see the gamertag of who is playing with me, or against me.

  • Yes please!

  • AYE to that me lad! For me name has been chosen for me a long time ago, but once on new waters one's name can be forgotten and a new one, more suited to a pirate's life, would be good AYE!
Me old friend could find me still with me old name.

  • Hello all! Sea of Thieves will use the Xbox Live Gamertag that you have made as your in-game name and not be allowing you to create an ‘alias’ of sorts. If you’d like to change the way your name appears you can always change your Gamertag through Xbox.com.

I feel like the system could make the connection between the alias and the gamertag easily enough. When you add / report the alias it just applies it to the connected gamertag, no issue.... I've seen this in games well before now.

I would really like them to remove floating gamers tags or better still alter how they function. But if they are in the game and i'm seeing stuff like ELITXX0XSNIPEZZZE00XX, it kinda kills the immersion. Its not the biggest issue but its another one of those 'why not' issues. But I guess it takes memory space n stuff.

YES!!! also increase the amount of characters you can have in a name, i really wanted my name to be Jack T LittleShoes but i ran outta room :/

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi
So, I'm gonna have to cough up an extra 10 dollars just to get a better suiting name?

  • @shaderomega if you’ve already used up your 1 free Gamertag change then yes it won’t be free the second time, or anytime after.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi the one free change isnt free anymore i have tried. EDIT: atleast not in the way you would think. before it was an outright name change, but now its a randomly chosen name for free one time. and 10$ anytime you try and create your own original name.

  • @dem0nscarer the original random Gamertag that’s generated should still be free to change, unless they changed that in the last week.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi
The name change is free IF and only IF you got one that was from a randomly picked list for you. If you chose a suggested alternative because your original name wasn't available, you do not get a free name change at all.

  • I would've liked to be able to name our character.
I guess it's still something that could be implemented later on..

In Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, you still had your gamertag to sign into the game, but each character you had a unique name for.
You couldn't have the same name as anyone else BUT you had to choose a first and last name with no numbers or irregular symbols.

It led to never seeing names like xXnoSc0pe420Xx or Jimbo5432634 which was nice in an immersive world like FFXIV has to offer, but as well as allowed players to use names referencing the lore/world their in. Of course you'd find a Cloud Strife, but the beauty is, there'd only be one.

  • This is one aspect, of the game being tied directly to the Xbox, that is rather lousy for PC players.
Using the gamer tag as the in-game character name was a surprise... and then not being able to change it for free is an absolute shock and seems utterly ridiculous to anyone that just wanted to have a suitable name for this game.

I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but it seems very wrong to me.

  • I just created a separate Gamertag under my family account. Xbox set to home you can play any game under any name.

Just had to create another email which Microsoft outlook is easily built into the process.

Not the first game I did this with

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Boo. You've made me a sad pirate. :*(

  • I agree with this. I don't think that would be hard to implement. The game has a very nice lore and there are many people that like RP as well, so that would be a great way to make the game even better.

  • Hi! I just changed my Gamertag for free. I'm much happier. Thanks to all.
