Severe in-game chat delay makes cross-platform play a nuisance

  • Sea of Thieves is lots of fun. Unfortunately, the voice chat delay is not.

I'm aware that there are alternatives, such as using Discord for PC players and using party chat if doing cross-platform teams but there doesn't appear to be a third option for people cross-platforming in the same home.

My wife is playing the game on Xbox One, signed into her own profile, while I'm playing on Win10 using my own profile. Using party chat would require me to load the Xbox app which signs me into my profile on the Xbox and promptly kicks her from the game. I understand that this is a limitation/oversight of the Xbox Play Anywhere program but it wouldn't be the issue it is if it weren't being exacerbated by the 30-60 second chat delay.

I've not seen many complaints about in-game voice chat so I'm here to offer my feedback on it and that can be summed up in two words.

    It's brutal.

  • Yeh I agree the gamechat isn’t perfect come to think of it... it lags.. cuts out and needs revisiting by the devs... I also think other crews chats should come through the headset if wish.

  • @lordvader1o1 Currently experiencing a complete outage at the moment. Neither of us can hear or be heard. Baffling. I'm really hoping this is just a byproduct of the scale test and not something they've completely whiffed on with less than a month to release.

  • I and my wife play in the same house but in different rooms and the delay and quality of the game chat is just awful. We always end up switching to the xbox party chat which is heaps better. Kind of sucks because we'd love to chat with random folks in the game but the we just can't stand how bad it is.

  • @captain-surgee If you don't mind me asking, are you two using separate copies of the game?

  • It's important to note this is also simply a scale test so serious lag is expected to occur. Earlier today me (on xbox) and my crew mate(on PC) both after colliding with an enemy ship immediately had our game reduced to 1 frame per second, as if we were going through a flip book. We reloaded and it was fine. There are simply current lag issues associated with various game mechanics that most likely won't be prominent in the launch.

  • @orbit-storm nop. We family share all games except ESO: Morrowind (b******s blocked family sharing with some fancy code system). For SoT we'll be using game pass (also shared). I did have a pre-order before but canceled it.

  • @orbit-storm
My suggestion is to get a better internet connection, or choose better your crew mates.

I play a lot with crossplay players. Never had a single complain about anything.. I don't even know they are on a different platform before they mention it.

  • @captain-surgee Oof. Wasn't aware of the ESO bit for console. That's annoying, actually.

But for SoT: are you doing cross-play? Not sure if you noticed in my original post but we can't seem to find a way to use party chat between PC and console.

  • @nunoazuldimeter Did you not read the original post? That crewmate is my wife, in the same house. The issue is not my internet connection either.

  • @orbit-storm
Perhaps hes saying you need to choose a better wife.....sounds like fisticuffs to me!

Hum. Even more weird. Because I really didn't have any kind of problem was with that.

But playing with players at the same house I recall when I used to play CS with my girlfriend at the time.. I always had a delay from what she said.
Maybe there's some technical reason for that to happen. Not necessarily related with this game. I don't know..

    LoooL.

  • as a pc player my xbox friend complained i would get cut off using PTT. I just set it to open mic and that seemed to resolve the issue for me.

  • Only issues have been combat... but playing the same game on the same network, hope you have V****n/router restart! (remove power cable for 10 secs)

  • Same issues on voice chat. Myself on Pc, my daughter on her XB1. Same house, same network. Serious chat lags, cutting out, etc. If I jump off the PC hop on my XB1 AND switch from game chat to party chat, all is well. Except now we have no ability to utilize the benefits of proximity chat....

  • Oh believe me....there are plenty of complaints about the in-game voice chat as of late from PC players. Check out my posts. It is busted for USB Mics.

That said though I feel you on the Play Anywhere issue. I have 2 microsoft accounts thanks to being an original xbox live adopter. Yay Email addresses from 20 years ago. So I will never be able to play this on my original gamertag if I want to play this on my PC....because my windows account isn't my gamertag. So the draw of being able to play on xbone is useless to me. Nothing we can do, like you said, but for god sake they need to fix our voice chat........

*Note - I use my original gamertag on my PC (signed in), but the key will be on my windows account, so not on my original xbox account.

  • @orbit-storm
Me and my partner encountered this problem what we had to do was i open the xbox app on the pc first before they launch the game on the Xbox then they switch to there profile and sign me out of the xbox then they proceed to join the game and all should be fine.

sorry if this came too late but I hope it helps in future.

I will also agree that the in-game delay is savage my partner also had to turn their game sound down to be able to hear me as I was very quiet (this only seems to be a problem in sof in-game chat as it was fine in party chat)
