  • I am in love with your graphics!

  • Exactly a thing I was thinking about since I first played. But your design is absolutely beautiful. You just always deliver such high quality content ;_;
    GIVE THIS MAN A GRAVESTONE!

  • OMG!!!! YEEESSS! I'm going to cry if this doesn't make it into the game.

  • Lol shooting the rope would be impressive.

  • This almost looks official!

  • Awesome concept! Could see lots of fun to be had with this!

  • @shoothere4exp Not only is this a fantastic concept, but the artwork is absolutely fantastic; keep up the good work!

  • It would be really cool if you could shoot while your hanging off of the rope of the grappling gun too, this would be the only time I'd find that acceptable

  • @shoothere4exp Im In. Where do I sign up?!

  • @shoothere4exp

The idea is awesome. Your visuals illustrate the idea fantastically. Your visuals are always so great they seem like part of the lore.

    Rare should hire you :3

  • I'm on board

  • Very nice!!!🙂👍

  • This would be awesome !

  • Interesting idea. Great design. Grapple guns make me think of Batman. IMO just a throwable line with a hook would fit in the world better.

  • ...but after thinking more about it, you’re on to something. A “grapple gadget” would be easier to implement.

  • I want this now. please add this to the main suggestion tread.

I was actually torn on this as well, I do think having just a standard grapple and rope that you could twirl and release could be fun and very social, but the flintlock grapple gadget seemed to really +up the fun factor, and also allows for aiming in additional to more possibilities for aesthetic customization.

@Maia that would be awesome but I do love my current job. If I'm ever out of one I would definitely consider applying

@GodsPhoenix13 Thank you! Upvotes and bumping the thread go a long way!

@xCALYPT0x that would be cool, achievement maybe??

@Retto-Elbaroda Haha that would make me so happy

  • Very nice artwork.
Would be very fun but I wonder if they would even implement such a weapon/gadget... It's a bit advanced and out of place as of now.
But I always love grappling in games.

If they think about it down the line, then it should be a bit expensive or a bit hard to obtain. Imagine if it came from a pretty hard fort.

If they don't want it then this is still a quality post.

  • @shoothere4exp First off, let me just say that I love your concepts. Your drawings are very good. Kudos to you good sir.

However, as much as I love this, the psychics team just let out a collective groan at the amount of testing this would require. SOT physics are already REALLY touchy about players clipping into things with the response usually resulting in whatever is penetrating something that it shouldn't being launched outwards as if fired from a rail gun. That includes players, ships, and with this gadget the hook and rope itself. If you think some smart-a*s would not try to fire a cannonball and then launch a grappling hook at it mid flight, you are sadly mistaken. The amount of, lets say "interesting", behaviors this would introduce to the game would be insane.

I just hope the bullets we fire out of guns are not physics objects, because if they are, they are also a target for the grappling hook.

If you look back at the history of rope physics in video games, ropes have been done the same way for quite a long time. Essentially 2 physics objects, usually rods, connected at each end to another rod to freely rotate at the connection points. More like a chain than a rope. As graphics get better the rod segments get smaller and the rod rope becomes more rope like. Obviously, the more detail there is, the more rods there are and the more physics calculations you need to do to have the rod rope behave like an actual rope.

Best example of the rod rope I could find. Half Life 1
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8wBuoNwwWc

You can clearly see the rods making up the rope as he swings around.

Note, SOT does not have any ropes in the game. At all. Not one. All of those "ropes" on the ship are actually static objects that animate to look like ropes. They do not sag, or flex, they do not move if you fall on them, they have no psychics calculations running. I wouldn't be surprised if it is actually just the textures animating on the ropes to give the illusion of movement.

The best example of super awesome ropes in video games I can think of is in Uncharted 4. The ropes in Uncharted 4 look silky smooth and behave like actual ropes for the most part.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUQNW5vN8W8

They even use it as a winch at one point during the campaign.

This is all not to say that occasionally things do not go horribly wrong with the rope, especially when attached to moving objects, like in this clip a rope being attached to a moving car.

Or this clip(at 2:23) where a tree is caught between the player and a moving object when the rope is attached. Kudos to the guy who coded the rope, it recovered pretty well from that.

Given that Uncharted 4 has multiplayer, I guess there are probably ways to do rope physics with minimal impact on performance, but it is still something to keep in mind. When in SOT you would need to be able to handle 8 ropes swinging at any given time, since two 4 man crews fighting each other is fairly common.

Just sharing my thoughts from a technical perspective. I love your work, and those drawings are sexy. I'd be lying if I said I did not want this in the game, even if it broke the physics engine. First thing I would do is go to one of the skeletal forts, attach one end of the rope to my sloop, and then run it up a skeletal tower and jump down to see if I could raise the sloop up the tower like a giant fish. Or get a crew of 4 and see if we can drag a Galleon on shore and up a mountain.

  • Just stumbled upon this. The idea/implementation/thoroughness/visuals are perfect. Well done. I like how this one gadget has a plethora of uses. Love it.

  • It's a cool idea, but looks a bit OP.

  • Yes please ^_^
(previous favorite game was Just Cause 3 so... yeah, grapple hooks)

  • This would need very careful and smooth physics implementation for swinging and hanging. The gadget would also need to have a limited amount of bullets (rope ammo?) as it might give people too much of an advantage. But if these things are figured out and worked on, I feel this gadget could really add to the pirate experience

  • @cows-n-muffins swinging ships could be done more easy and arcade by making it sort of an arced jumped forward with an fixed arc trajectory. Then just make hitboxes for the upper parts of the masts and when a player hits it you draw/render a rope like straight line texture non physics based. When the player pressea jump when he is "connected" is just makes his character leap forward 20 metered with an arced trajectory.

I guess it can also work a snare weapon, but I agree that having it physics based and enable dangling other players or drag them is gonna be too much to ask that's just very costly performance wise.

  • @shoothere4exp
I'm pretty sure this will be a thing..
I think I saw something about grapple gun in that datamine posts.

  • @saltyzar I have a bit of an odd fascination with physics based ropes in video games, and the various tricks that are used to make ropes that are not physics based. That's why I made the giant response showing just what it would take to add actual ropes to SOT. If they actually manage to add in something like this grappling gun with rope behaviors similar to Uncharted 4, I will be very happy.

  • @red0demon0 Agreed. That's why I would put it as a gun option. First you'd have to select it replacing one of your 2 allowed weapon slots. Secondly, they could give it shots similar to the other guns that force you to reload back at the boat. That would prevent them from becoming a way of traversing the world quickly and overused in PvP.

  • Seeing this in game would make it for me. The only thing I would change for balance reasons, is that it can't tie players up, just anchor them. so they would have a maximum radius or need to cut the line. A situational asset in this case. And after reading through the comments i guess instead of a gun, it could be just rope and a hook. that way using it would have more skill than just point an click. as for the concern of adding skins to such a version, i think it would be fine. golden hooks, ones with barnacles, crab legs for the hook points, made of corral. etc

  • Great work again dude!!! keep it up

  • Totally agree..we need this in the game!

  • Love this idea. The ammo would have to be limited to one or two rounds on your person, that way boarders couldn't swim around indefinitely and reload each time their line is cut. The hook would come in handy as well if, as other users have suggested, the boat ladders could be raised. Make it happen Rare!

  • Graphics so good, and yes good idea too =)

I would volunteer to be used as the captive strung up in front of the ship, or tethered to the spike, just to get this going!
