like you get treasure and money but what do you do with that, and what's the aim of the game? If you can't get more powerful in the server then surely there isn't really anything to the game...
Someone actually tell me what the aim is...
@noctic2016 The title of "pirate legend", access to a secret base and fancy ships, and exclusive missions

what's the aim of the game?
to fight (on a level playingfield) and look good
Post-bumping your bump.
Really, the point of Sea of Thieves boils down to the 3 S's
- Sailing
- Shenanigans
- Showing-off

Your typical MMORPG offer's classes with levels, gear, and faction progression that's achieved over time.
What Rare has done here is simply say 'Everyone starts at max level with the best gear'.
Everyone is instantly 'combat effective' and ready to engage in the 'end game' content....... vanity gear, faction rep, and PvP.If the 'journey' to max level is important to you and you're not one of those players who engages in end game content, maybe SoTs isn't gonna be your bag.
@noctic2016 Nope, there isn't. Very cool game and cool concept. Not much to keep players around for long unless something changes/gets added. Same old thing, more collect and return missions. That's fun for a bit but does get old FAST.
@noctic2016
Some games are narative driven with a clear sense of purpose. Many games are not including sandbox games(like minecraft) or pvp (usualy matchmaking) oriented games (like overwatch or PUBG).Sea of thieves aims to combine sandbox and pvp elements into an open world non narative driven game.
This means that while their are things you aspire to and rewards for doing stuff like getting sweet cosmetics and an awesome looking ship, they are secondary to base gameplay of having fun with friends and competing with other pirates.
I hope this helps explain a bit better.
Edit: I forgot to mention simulator games. A big part of the charm of sea of thieves is that it offers the experience of sailing in a way that hasn't really been done in video games (as far as i'm aware at least).
Also, the game isn't actually "about pvp", it's like minecraft in that, pvp is always an option but their are other goals and dealing with players who may or may not be friendly adds an element of negotiation (which can be fun but mostly sucks if you are friendly).@noctic2016 said in Someone actually tell me what the aim is...:

Some people are saying become a pirate legend or to get the coolest cosmetic stuff or pet.
I know for some people they " must be told what to achieve " or " must be told a goal " etc and for those players, to be honest im not sure how much fun they will have.
Now as what my aim is, well this is a fun quick easy fps sorta game where i can log on, quickly be on my ship and either hunting players to kill or steal from or hop on with a few friends and have fun fighting some pvp for a while.
Basically just a fun little fps on water that i dont need to worry about " being the strongest " or " being the highest level" etc.
For someone like me who works 6 days a week 12+ hours a day this game is a great way to relax.
If you are into long grinds and boss camping for 3 weeks to get a blue sword then well this may not be your game.
At least this is my take on it.@thelagmage there was that one game. guns of Icarus i believe. where you and a few others "sailed" an airship and fought against other players.
@erikinthebakery Absolutely nailed it, it's all about the stories you make and the interactions the treasure and missions etc. are all just things to do while waiting to stumble upon another ship/crew to meet/steal from/kill/drink with/laugh at..... the list goes on lol
@ant-heuser-kush
Shanties (Showing Off your musical abilities), sniping (Shenanigans), solo slooping (Sailing).@ant-heuser-kush said in Someone actually tell me what the aim is...:
You win.
I love quotes like this... hahaha
@noctic2016 Think Fortnite or PubG progression; Both games are extremely popular and people love them. Neither game has a power level progression and it isn't needed to make the game fun. This game is all about the experience and overall game play. You progress up a faction rank and will earn aesthetics to boost your vanity power. #VanityStatBestStat
From Penny Arcade:
"Sea of Thieves is an old trunk full of Pirate clothes. That is what it wants to be, a tool to wear and manifest Piracy as a concept. There’s a lot of things it doesn’t do, and it appears to have flirted with heresy as a result: you build faction by taking and accomplishing quests, but you don’t fill a “gunnery” bar when you you load and fire cannons and you don’t craft s**t and there are no genuflections towards RPG fetishism. If I shoot your boat there isn’t a bar that tells me how many more times I need to shoot it.
You play it because, in my experience, it’s a place to be with your friends and accomplish tasks together. The information it wants to tell you is displayed in the world as stimuli. It tasks itself with simulating a solid, reliable platform so you can engage in acts of high-seas derring-do. It wants you to be present and to this end it doesn’t drape a lot of incremental, ambient data over everything so the “progress” you feel is based on what you and your friends wanted to do. It’s not trying to manipulate you, and it’s so gentle about describing its virtues to that some people can’t recognize it as a game at all."

This pretty much exactly, sums up the progression. An easy solution to this whole pve/pvp debate would be to make the merchant system provide more progression through missions and pve content. If you appease the pve'rs need for being special flowers and reward them goodies that they can work for and feel like they earned something unique, then they won't complain about dealing with a little pvp.

Then its 100% clear. This game is not for you. Move on.
