I think once the retail game comes out it will change the play dynamic because right now since there is a limited amount of things to do and nothing carries over to the main game the easiest thing to do right now is to attack everything that moves.
Griefing in beta vs launch
@macatwork I disagree. Now's the best time to start figuring out what works, making alliances, making friends, and getting your mind right for all those lovely treasure chests, and how you're gonna turn them in. But you do you, buddy.
There wont be a whole much more to do in full release. pretty much just more similar missions to what we have already.. and the skeleton island event will be something different...and kraken killing. PvP will still be the main thing to do for fun on release. And with 2 ships that'll get stale fast so more trollish forms of pvp will rise
Its rather good to learn your ropes in how to deal with other pirates aside from the ones you play with, figuring out how you can use the wind to escape larger ships or knowing if its worth your time trying to chase anyone with said ship, learning the uses of "sappers" to guarantee your ships getaway or watching enemy ships blow up by explosives your crew sneak on board is rather invaluable knowledge that should be gathered as soon as possible.
Knowing to not roam with too many valuable chests is also something to take into account, because if someone sees you, sinks you and find that treasure, they'll have more then a justify able reason then to just attack you and will then contest over the treasure to make sure they collect it before you respawn several isles away from the site.
It makes you a better pirate in the long run against other pirates and helps you valuate situations in the long run rather then soiling your pants because a Galleon rammed into your ship with destructive sappers boarding your ship, this aggressive behavior is a part of taking on the role as a pirate, just about anything you do is out of greed (a thing me and me crew did to some sealegs).
I don't think this is right. If anything it will get a LOT WORSE! Think about it, all the people playing the beta have an interest in the game beyond "this looks fun". The first week everyone will be together fighting the first lower level missions before the player base spreads out. Then you will have the rush to end game guys with nothing to do but troll the lower level pirates.
The issue is that with all player being equal strength is that not all players are equal. So you have casual player now in the mix making easy pickings for more experienced crews that are still on the same maps. Do you really think they will play the same go look for this type missions over and over OR will they play a game of hunt and destroy the newbs. While the get gud argument is then thrown about but it makes little diff to someone playing 2 hours a week for fun. They will no longer want to play because what is the point just playing to be fodder. People on these forums forget that they are on the forums because they love gaming and so play a lot but 90% of the player base isnt like this and just want a fun game to play.

What end game??? There is ZERO vertical progression which is why there is so much hostile pvp for the end game has zero reward outside of cosmetics.

I've done almost nothing but PvP so far, and I intend to do a lot of exploring and mission stuff when the game comes out. My intent with PvP in the alpha/beta was to learn to sail and defend myself; to learn ship combat tactics. If someone's approach to games is so casual that they have no interest in learning the game, that person will only ever like simple games with little challenge. That shouldn't mean that every game is simple and non-challenging, and it doesn't mean that complex and difficult games are bad games.

When you reach legendary status. This is the goal and unlocks the legendary area or as i call it the end game content. Its been clearly advertised how this game works, there is a goal and thus an end and if there is an end there is end game.
PvP is, by design, a core element of this game. People who are complaining about being constantly attacked are like someone playing Counter Strike and complaining that he is shot at. Quests for chests, and also those which are yet to be introduced are rather simple and their purpose is just to make things lively and interesting between pvp encounters.

See the problem there? If that is how most are viewing the end game for Pirate Dress Up Simulator minute the PvP community gets tired (More than likely 2- 3 weeks after launch) this game will flop.
From the beta's already most of us treat it like a PUBG with pirates due to the distinct lack of vertical progession and cheesy far too easy PvE and PvP, any other MMO with "End Game" has pve raids for gear and weapon progression calling legendary status progression or even end game is rediculous when the rewards are cosmetic only not even these Skeleton Fort raids theyre promising has any form of weapon or gear upgrades outside of cosmetic rewards.
@haiafang The idea of gun upgrade is kinda pointless, because, as you upgrade the guns you have to upgrade the enemies then you need to upgrade the guns again all the time your just moving goal posts and not getting anywhere. This game is about status, not my gun is higher dps than yours.
personally this is a great move as it keeps everything on a playing field. there is still something to pay for as you achieve ranking and status. Also note this is a beta with early mission types. expect there to be much harder enemies to defeat, see the art guide on amazon to see some different enemy types etc.@lumpaywk Still for no reward outside of cosmetic only. Im not holding my breath on this title but merely quietly observing to see how long before it flops due to the lack of progression regardless of 'tougher' enemies outside of ship to ship player combat treat it like a PUBG dress up simulator and then yes its enjoyable but long term dont see it holding a strong or even large community.
Many players are complaining about PvP, "griefers" and more. Many players have played the closed beta and this scale test is almost the same. Some people want to do something else than searching for chests because their progression will be wiped in the future. They want to try something else in Sea of Thieves: sea battles.
With launch we will have the Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls and the Trading Company with the goal to become a Pirate Legend. I think sea battles will be less important then. People have a mission to complete.
I think (new) players are complaining too fast. Sea of Thieves is a pirate game (never seen Pirates of the Caribbean, entering and firing other ships?). Players have to scan their horizon to find other ships. Do you see any ships? If yes, which direction are they sailing? Keep scanning your horizon and take actions if needed.
@lumpaywk Never played minecraft bit too kiddie for my liking :D But What I am saying is myself and people like me get bored very quickly with titles with no real challenge to it more so with no real progression.
I am a PvP heavily focused gamer myself who also enjoys real endgame PvE progression in MMO's but even the PvP on here I don't see it holding myself and my crew here long term same with some others the cosmetic rewards only option Rare chose to go may be the coup de grace eventually that causes SoT to flop if the community gets too small unless rare decides to eventually go the vertical progression route for so far SoT looks like it'll be a very casual focused title.
@gulpee-rex At last someone saying Pirates of the Caribbean instead of "real" pirates lol. That said i feel that while the progression is linear that servers should be ranked so that players that pvp end up on the same servers etc.

Exactly that's what my friend and I did. We've done a little bit of treasure hunting on the first day of the Scale Test, and the next day we tried out the PVP aspect of the game.
We had no reason to keep collecting more gold when everything gets wiped anyway.
@haiafang You may not play it but it is one of the biggest selling games of a time and has one of the biggest and longest active player base. The current biggest game PUBG also has no gun rankings and only cosmetic enhancements yet nobody can deny its holding a huge fan base. Just because you need to have high dps and grind for better armor to complete doesn't mean it makes the game have more or less longevity. The wonderful thing about life is variety and this game is giving a new approach and that's a great thing. That comes from how fun the game is to play. You still have rewards to work towards and for once they mean something.
@lumpaywk The difference is that there is cusimization to the guns you find. There isn't 2 guns in all of pubg, and of the guns there are in the game, you can add different sights to make them each preform to your fitting. SoT has 2 ships with nothing you can swap out to make them play to your style.

I agree with you. This is why I go out and look for ships to sink since the progression you get now gets reset anyways.

@Gulpee-Rex the only people that are complaining are those that aren't playing with other people. It is difficult to survive while playing solo. There are guilds and clans out there that can help put you in groups.
It used to say that Solo/Sloop was only for the experienced players but if you have to complain on the forums than you are NOT EXPERIENCED yet.
Go to Mega Thread - PvE versus PvP where you can continue this discussion.
@the-warcrombie check this out..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBA_Hi_3uRAIts an end game recap of what is to come with the official release. May give you a little more to want than just what was in the beta.
@macatwork Last night my crew focused on hunting ships and ship to ship tactics. So yes, there is an element of truth to your statement. I agree!
I do think it's important to note what is "griefing" vs just playing the game. PVP part is just playing the game. As in all other posts I've seen, learn it - get used to it - figure out ways around it if you don't like it, etc. But there IS an aspect of griefing that the devs can help before the next beta / launch.
Figure out the respawning "place". If pirates are on your ship, and you respawn back on your ship, then of course they are likely to kill you if that's what they just did. They could sit there for hours to do it. So give an option (or just do it automatically) to respawn elsewhere if enemies are still around. That stops the griefing, as you now have the decision making choice of where to spawn to stop the action from happening. Should be simple enough. And if all your team-mates decide to respawn elsewhere? Give an option to sink the current ship and respawn it. That devalues the current ship from the pirates that are on it attacking, and they'll go off and do their own thing elsewhere.
See there IS a happy medium if folks just get creative and think out of the box ;)
@captoftheship Really 2/3 of the voyages are very similar in nature "go get this" the OOS is different which is nice. So beyond that we have a kraken and skeleton forts, which both are neat and exciting...but that's all we have to look forward to. The Pirate Legend isn't too exciting to me as it wont be very legendary since its not hard to achieve and they expect everyone to be one within a month or two
@lumpaywk PUBG has vertical progression. You can gain access to different weapons that give you an advantage in combat. It just resets after each round, but that's still power progression. In fact, it's a good way to handle vertical progression because you will always have something to gain and work towards. I think SoT would be best served having weapons and equipment that can give players advantages, but are dropped upon death and can be stolen.

There isnt 2 guns in the whole of sea of thieves. I don't get your point? you pick the weapons to suit your style in going back to pubg there you just find the best you can laying around. So if anything sea of thieves has more progression and choice.
@lumpaywk There is two ships. there is 3 guns. saying sot has more progression and choice is literally the biggest blatant false statement ive ever seen in the forums haha.
@ancienttheron Pardon me please if this is a stupid question, but what does/do you mean in “sappers”? I really just never have heard the word in gaming. Thanks!

I just watched this and Loved it!
My first experience with SoT was more like a PVP Arena and we sucked. Seeing this Vid was great, in that it gave me hope that NOT ALL SHIPS ARE FOE.Sadly, watch the next Vid... Same guy, Arena PVP Style, KOS for the sake of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwYQMPo928Y&t=1133s
Too bad. The second Vid is more along the lines of my experience on the other end and this is what I think people are trying to talk about.
Let's not make SoT an Arena PVP Kill Fest. It's meant to be an Open World, PVP, Adventure game. At leat that is how it is advertised.
