Map size

  • How big will the map be on launch? I heard it will take a few real life hours to sail the seas is that true?

  • In the beta it seemed kinda small but didn't see that many ships either. It's going to be crazy with more players logging in and interesting to see

  • @corrupt-fellow Where did you hear this from? Do you have a link to the source?

In the beta the map wasn't that big. I hope it gets expanded slightly and the player count goes up. I guess it all depends on what the servers can handle though.

  • @corrupt-fellow The current map, the one from the beta, is the full map size. They may add another outpost or a small amount of more islands to it but it is its max area already.

Rare has said that they will look into expanding the map in the future and if they do they'll likely expand the player count. As of right now, the map from the closed beta was the full map size.

  • The map size is determined by a metric that dictates how often a player would encounter another ship. Currently, the SoT team is focusing on a 15-30 minutes encounter time.

If player number increases, in order to keep the average encounter the same, the map would be resized according to the metric.

  • @felid0r I heard it on summits stream.

  • I've read several places that there will be a total of four/4 added maps. Now I don't know if this means, islands, maps, or it will be expanded.

  • They will have to expand the map in the future for this game to evolve, but the size of the map now is ok.

  • Yup, that is what was available in testing, the full map with the three biomes.

  • @rainmaker66 oh, I must have been confused, there must be biomes of some sorts the map. I think the map is a little small as of right now for the amount of players that the game is going to start getting. So either the whole map isn't released to us or Rare is in for a rude awakening.

They will have to make it bigger eventually as it would become quite boring, don't get me wrong this game is great, but map size will need to change.

  • of course the final Map needs to be way bigger or there should at least be different maps.

    According to: https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/scale-test

"We do plan on running another Beta closer to the launch of the game, where players will get a taste of the wider Sea of Thieves experience, but for now our focus is on our Scale Testing plans. We will have more to share on that as we get closer to launch."

there might be a bigger map available for release

  • For those who likes to have a map :D~

  • @viruscool thats an old map some island have been moved and some have been added. (like the small islands)

  • I heard a rumor that it would take about 4-5 hours to cross the map upon launch. But, I don't know if that is confirmed.

    Its at MAX already?

Damn... that actually gives me second thoughts. Cause me thinks the map is too small and it only has small islands.

I mean we have these companies to work for but all in all, we just go from small island to small island... damn.

    • Digging up treasure.
    • Collecting animals.
    • Killing skeletons.
    • Killing or avoiding other crews.

I was hoping for some really big islands or some inlands sailing close to some of the edges. Rivers and such.

oh ok, thx for the information, i saw this map on internet. i have two more to share with you, @xCALYPT0x show me this.

    map type 01

    map type 02

  • of what i heard it will take you 6h real life hours with the wind in your back to circle around the map one time

  • @expl0itation I've seen many a gameplay videos and found that those names are actually sections of one map, with names of islands within each section. I agree the map is probably as big as it will be at launch but I am not aposed to larger size. That just means more to explore.

  • @expl0itation Be carreful with datamined data because Rare staff & modos don't allow people to share them on this forum !

Haha, the rumor at its best. Me ? I heard it will take you 18 real life days to go from corner to corner.

Guys, it is more than likely the map you saw on the stress test is roughly the one you'll get at launch, minus maybe a few new islands, but regarding the size, you can expect the same size.

  • @viruscool those two are the new maps. the other one was from the E3.

  • @greyscissors That'd be insane, I can assure you that will not be the case.

The interactive one is great me lad! Although I shall not use it! Don't want to spoil me adventures!

  • The thing with datamining a beta is that it's not the full content software (beta file was like 18 Go and the game is told to be 60 in the requirements). Plus, usually for a scale testing you don't provide the actual game, just a part of it or an older build. These infos may not be complete at all. A rumor (I hate rumors...) says it was only 25% of the final content, but I didn't saw any official mention of this so... don't take it for a granted.

But a bigger map is probably not the best idea. Instances are limitated in players, and sailing for hours would be boring with time. The best thing to do is probably keeping it this way, and why not having other maps the same size.

  • @thejolirouge They can have a higher player count per instance hopefully...

The problem is when I played the stress test I remembered islands, I recognized the map and after even a couple hours of playing I didn't feel like I was exploring because its the same areas ive been to before. And while the islands are beautiful, they are quite similar to eachother.

  • i was hoping for at least one large landmass. like maybe up in the corner that goes off into the nonplayable area. i was also hoping for an arctic biome with extra blue water, grey skies, and ice bergs jutting out of the water, with the possibility of freezing if in the water to long and ice collecting on your face and beard. of course i would like to see the map size increase, but if by launch there isnt at least one really large landmass i will be a bit let down.

  • @dem0nscarer The last thing I want at the moment is an Artic Biome Brrrr!
Looking out of my real life window there is 8 inches of snow with blizzard conditions forecast for tomorrow.
Falling off my SOT ship into warm tropical waters seems much more preferable.
I concede I may feel different if we have a scorcher of a summer.

Roll on spring and SOT release.

Apologies to all would be pirates from more southerly latitudes and you to Demonscarer my frivilous wistful observations are strictly based on a northern hemisphere perspective.
And Yes I have too much time on my hands.

  • @saglant777 lol well i live in texas and hardly ever experience said cold weather, but i can see where you are coming from. if it was all in the same map you could just sail away from the cold if you wish.

  • @dem0nscarer I'll lookout for the Lone Star on the sails I spy on the horizon in the knowledge the Demonslayer has me marked with the Black Spot.

  • @saglant777 lol well im relatively friendly for the most part (unless i just have a hankering for some pvp action) and usually im by myself looking for 4 man crews to destroy when im looking for a fight, but i wont fire unless you do ;)

  • I'm ok with the map size in the beta, but I do hope an expansion is in the works for the first major content update. More exploration is always better in my book.

Also, I'm still hoping they sneak in a Treasure Trove Cove island somewhere.
