If a ship successfully sinks and steals cargo from the gold hoarders and order of souls, they can easily sell it. But if a ship sinks another ship carrying merchant alliance cargo, can you just sell chickens and snakes, etc? Because if that's the case there's no point of the merchant alliance "shopping lists" since the items can be sold anyways.

the merchant alliances don't care where their requested items come from. if they send a crew on a voyage to retrieve 10 chickens, and a different crew returns those 10 chickens to them, they probably don't care. savvy?
@cwarrick66 Yes but then what's the point of the "shopping lists" we've seen for merchant voyages if they'll buy cargo in any number or type?

To have a purpose other than being a place to sell to. Gold Hoarders is the same concept. You can just turn in random chests without voyages. The voyages are what make it interesting,

You obviously would get money for selling the animals when u steal them but you get more money if it’s your quest I’d assume
Plus rep gains.
Similar to shipping missions in other games. Elite Dangerous comes to mind. Buying and selling items on the open market is always profitable on its own. Whereas acquiring specific items on a contractual basis is worth considerably more when compared on a one to one basis. You may be able to acquire chickens and snakes and what have you, and casually sell them to the Merchant Alliance for some small amount. But turning them in as part of a contract will yield a much greater reward. ... Perhaps it will be made possible to steal the actual contract along with its already acquired requested items?
@residentapple12
Well frist of all it was stated in videos that it will be much harder to steal livestock as they are acceptible to damage as such they are like to drown if ship sinks or get blown up in combat. but its more then likely you can just turn in anything you collect to any outpost. Althou there is a timed element so that cargo would be worth more to a certian port during a certian time. if watch closely to certian gamplay videos.@shadowstrider-7 said in Stealing Merchant Cargo:

But in the case of the gold hoarders, chests aren't just lying on the beach for you to grab, you need the voyage paper to uncover them. Your point is totally unrelated since merchant cargo doesn't need to be uncovered through riddles or maps.

Good answer, clears things up. @ENFORCER To the people who keep saying it's a struggle to maintain the life of the cargo animals while on ship, that's not related to my point. My point is unless what @HamFistedGaloot said is true, the merchant voyages are pointless
@residentapple12
During the Beta there were plenty of Chests just openly sitting on various islands or in Shipwrecks, ripe for taking. 😉@residentapple12 Chests are indeed sitting on the islands and able to acquired without a map. However, you can only dig for treasure with a map.
@shadowstrider-7 @Thor-von-Blitz @XShadovvHunterX @MisterDoomed Yes but actually buying voyages for finding chests was much more profitable. For the merchant cargo, unless there is a greater reward for the "shopping list" being followed(which hasn't been announced or confirmed) there won't be a point in buying its voyages since the items don't require voyages to find and sell.
@residentapple12
I'd assume completing a shopping order/list (with specific quantities of requested goods) will most certainly give you a higher pay out.You get payed for the complete delivered order/list and not each single item.
@residentapple12 To be fair, there'd be no point to have a Merchant Alliance if their voyages didn't pay more than basic trade. Though specific details have yet to be released about it, it's safe to say you'll see a clear advantage to completing voyages.
