New character customiser.

  • Many of you may have seen the new character creator in Sea of Thieves.
The game gives you 8 set pirates to choose between which you can reroll until you find the one you like.

Is this a good idea because it will stop people from making the same pirate.
Or is it a bad idea because you aren't able to create the pirate yourself?

  • I am a little disappointed I will not be able to customize my character how I see fit.

May the random generation process be in my favor. I expect to be on this screen for awhile rolling those dice.

  • I think it is a mixed bag -.-
On the one hand you cannot make yourself as a pirate and cannot spend hours upon hours on the character creation with your little sliders
(having spent many hours on Black Desert Online character creation and omg it was wonderful :D )
but on the other hand we will never see any big body/heads on very small/long arms and legs since these characters on the wheel will be realistic.

I think they will add some filters (hopefully) like gender, height, size, skin color...not things like hairstyle or haircolor since there are hairstyles to buy then why not change the hair color itself with the right amount of gold? :D

  • Very disappointed at this. I want to entirely control the way my character look. Not randomly hit the shuffle button over and over.

  • A least they should add some filters options.
Gender, age, morphology, details (scare, tatoos, ...)

  • I'm not really bothered. Either way, you'll be able to find a character you like.

  • Agreed with others. You can simply re-roll until you're happy. However, the idea behind this feature was to get you to play as a character that you normally wouldn't. Encourages creativity.

  • I'm happy that most characters will actually have imperfections now (as pirates should).

  • diversity in character look is good idea IMO

  • @shikia-caeleaum Yeah filters would definitely take the sting out of the character selection process!

  • @slipkick01 So I am the guy that spent 1-2 hours customizing my character in Skyrim. He/she had to be just right, and I was normally very proud of the creations I made. It added to the game, and my overall experience and perception of the game itself. Sea of Thieves on the other hand is making my character for me, and then its asking me to grind for hours to acquire gold so I can change the look of my character that they made me to fit the style I like. Its about the laziest form of development I've seen in a while, its right up there with the Center of the Universe bit from NMS.

Not only are the rewards I garner after grinding for hours nominal, they're things that every other game with character customization gives me for free at the start. So you're telling me that part of the games rewards system isn't ship parts of weapons, no its beards and eye-patches? Yikes, that's a bad idea.

But okay, I am willing to give it a chance and see what happens. Maybe its alright, maybe its not as bad as it seems. But the fact this is even an issue at all, something so easily avoided, something so basic and simple, scares the hell out of me.

  • Yeh I’m happy with it tbh because there’s so many to choose from :)

  • I was disappointed to hear the news that we wouldn't be able to "create" our own characters, but the of a "generator" is slowly growing on me.

I think in the end we'll end up with better looking pirates in the end this way. I wish it'd have at least a gender selector. I also saw a good idea on reddit of being able to "hold back" certain selections from being re-randomized so you can save one you like and still try to get one that you like better.

  • BAD IDEA. I just don't see why we can't have more control. I suppose it has something to do with launching on time and maybe they just couldn't get it all done. Or maybe they did it to prevent people from making some "inappropriate" character models

  • I'm normally the type to spend hours tweaking my character to be just the way I like him, but I am pretty excited about their 'Generator.' I have seen a bunch of the different pirates in youtube videos and my eyes have liked many of them, despite their aesthetic being so far from my usual. Definitely has my interest piqued.

  • @erikinthebakery
I posted a similar suggestion in the thread discussing the recent publication of articles. As well as a suggestion that allows us slightly more control in narrowing down the search. I think this would go a long way in satisfying some players that are scared they wont be able to pick a character they like.

  • @scheefinator How does in-depth character customization make everyone look the same?

  • @scheefinator None of my characters in WoW, or in Skyrim looked anything like anyone else. Actually, all my character looked really diverse and represented my style, which was very different from everyone else. But most importantly, the part of creating my character immersed me in to the gaming world, from the very beginning my influence was there and my character represented something other than just some pixels. Rare has decided to throw that idea out the window. Which kind of goes against everything they said from the beginning about their game.

I think its a cop-out. And a great example of lazy development. But I am willing to see how it goes, still not buying this game. But I will watch from afar. I keep challenging Rare to convince me to be a customer. And just when I think they might have me, they go and pull some of the stupidest stunts I've ever seen.

  • @erinom3 I just posted my own narrow it down idea as well

  • Id be happy with a generator if I can do as others stated: place restrictions on what is generated. Only one skin color, only male, only a specific body type, and then randomise the rest. I would be 100% ok with that. Once I find one I like allow me to hold onto it and re roll for others. At the end I'll sort through the ones I picked and select my final character, changing the hair and eye color to my liking and then go and play the game.

  • @scheefinator I disagree with all of this. But I understand that is your opinion, and you are entitled to it.

Maybe your experience was that people made character like yours in other games, but I for one never had that problem. I have a small YouTube channel, and a smaller following on Twitch. When I go to make a character its unique to my brand, there's certain things that I do during the process of creating a character that makes me stand out, but also represents me as a person and a gamer.

Rare has basically taken that all away. Or at least most of it away. They then took what would be normally given to new players to customize their characters, and add those items to the rewards you can purchase in game. So basically they took away what every RPG ever made gives to its players, and put it in front of in-game paywall. Its almost something straight out of the handbook of "how NOT to develop a video game."

Again, you are welcome to your opinion. I humbly disagree with all of it though.

  • It's tremendously disappointing. After all this talk about letting us "forge our own pirate legend", we don't actually get to choose whose legend we're forging. We just have to settle for "close enough." The parameters are already in place; just let us make our own pirates, please!w

  • I was hoping to make my own style with scars etc. But Ill use what ever they give me as the game is great.

  • I can't decide. On the one hand I like it. Sort of forces me into something I may not have decided on previously. On the other hand, I like that sense of control over creating "my" character.

I would like it a lot better if there was a "lock" button. That is, if I see a character I sort of like, but would like to browse some more, I can "lock' that one, and re-roll the other 7. Let us lock as many as we like until we narrow it down to "THE ONE" That would bring me 100% to the side of this system.

  • Just one question, do you think it will be possible to change character (but keeping all objects and cosmetic)?

Just one question, do you think it will be possible to change character (but keeping all objects and cosmetic)?

I have been reading the articles all morning. All of the articles that speak of choosing a pirate say choose wisely...becasue that pirate will forever be connected to your account, to your gamertag, etc.

  • As long as tattoos and scars are things that can be added later I'm okay with the generator.

My big thing is being able to find a pirate with the right tattoos that I like, and scars as well. I'm a big fan of the pirates with the hand and finger scars (for aesthetic fps reasons), but if I lose a pirate generated with those to the random generator because it also had terribly placed or looking tattoos that'd be a shame.

If we can pick/choose scars as well as tattoos later like we can with hair, beards, peg legs etc, then I'm good.

  • The character models are so awesome, I cant help but want to give this a try. I'm sure I'd eventually find a pirate that "resonates" with me, and it may be something I'd not think to make.
Like others have said, I'd be really happy if there was a "lock" or "standby" button to hold a toon , while other spots on the carousel continued to randomize pirates.

  • @ant-heuser-kush

And.... we won't end up with a sea of people all looking like Jack Sparrow... which is probably what they are trying to stop.

  • @scheefinator Stats do not define RPG. Playing a role does. This is an RPG game, not in the traditional sense that most are "used" to. But it is an RPG none the less.

  • I'm a little disappointed since I love making characters in games. It definitely won't turn me away, I'll just have to spend a lot of time randomizing.

I AM a little surprised by it though. Rare has talked so much about making your pirate your own, and this seems kinda counterproductive to that idea.

Still, at least they gave us infinite rerolls. Hopefully they'll add something like the lock button people have mentioned.

  • "Forge your own pirate legend!" Gives us RNG character selection.. ummm.. Lazy much?

  • I'm more concerned about that we wont have the ability EVER to redo the character we chose.. Am i really the only one afraid of this? Heck, even letting me pay a small amount of money for a re-roll ticket of some sort but not even that? I feel it is quite harsh to never have the ability to re-select a new character again. Anyone?

  • While I was a little upset by this at first, it ultimately lead me to the conclusion of "welph, guess I will be spending more time in the 'character randomizer' until I am happy".

Is this a deal breaker for me? No, just puts more weight on me to be certain of my choices.

@scheefinator said in New character customiser.:

That's exactly what they are trying to stop.

People also need to realize, this isn't an RPG. It is an pirate adventure game in a shared world. There's really no RPG stats in this game.

So you are telling me that it will be impossible to roll a male character with average height, average build and that there won't be options for a red bandana, pirate clothes and dreadlocks?

If the answer is Yes, wow that sounds like a boring game with no real customization.
If the answer is No, then 100,000 people can still make 100,000 Jack Sparrows.
