To clarify how Play Anywhere works if you have one copy.

  • There has been a lot of confusion I've been seeing on the forms on how play anywhere works. This is right from Microsoft website to clear it up.

How does Xbox Play Anywhere work?

When you buy an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game through the Xbox Store or the Windows Store, it’s yours to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC at no additional cost. To take advantage of Xbox Play Anywhere, you will need to have installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update on your PC, as well as the latest update on your Xbox One console. Then, simply log into your Xbox Live/Microsoft account and your Xbox Play Anywhere games will be available to download.

How can I purchase an Xbox Play Anywhere Title?

With Xbox Play Anywhere, it doesn’t matter which platform you buy the game for. You can either pre-order or purchase digitally on Xbox One or Windows 10. As long as you are using the same Microsoft Account (specifically, the email address you use to sign into Windows and Xbox) on both platforms, you can purchase on either and play on both.

Where can I buy Xbox Play Anywhere titles?

Since Xbox Play Anywhere only applies to digital games, there are multiple Store destinations that will offer Xbox Play Anywhere titles for purchase:
    Your Xbox One console
The Xbox App (Windows 10, iOS, Android)
    The Windows Store
    Xbox.com
    Microsoft.com
Digital Game Codes from participating retailers

Does Xbox Play Anywhere cost extra?

No. When you buy an Xbox Play Anywhere digital game, the ability to play on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC is included at no additional charge.

Can I be signed into the same game on Xbox One and my Windows 10 PC?

At any single point in time, you may only sign into the game on one Xbox One console or one Windows 10 PC. You cannot be signed into the same game on both platforms at the same time.

Can my game progress, downloadable content, Gamerscore and Achievements be accessed on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs?

Yes. When you play an Xbox Play Anywhere game, your game progress, DLC (including add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks), Gamerscore and Achievements are all saved on Xbox Live, so you can pick up where you left off on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC.

For more information on Xbox Play Anywhere (including the full list of titles that will support it), head on over to the official page on Xbox.com.

  • @canadianmuscle3 same question but different answer
    alt text

  • @triheadedmonkey yes but you cant have two people playing at the same time on the same account with one game. That's where people are getting confused.

But what you put is correct that you can switch between devices if your the only person. That's what I will be doing.

  • @canadianmuscle3 yeah I just thought it a bit odd that Xbox answered an identical question in two totally opposite ways haha

I'm not sharing my SoT with anyone!!! :D

  • during the beta, I was able to play with my girlfriend on two Xboxes because we have our consoles set to eachothers home console. So since i had access to the beta, so did she. didn't try it with PC/xbox though.

  • Hello, but if we buy the game in CD, will we get a CD-KEY to put it on Win10 if we don't have an XboX ?

It's only for digital purchases mate

    Regards

  • So Amazon was selling physical copies of the game for $37 and Digital copies for $60. Therefore the physical Xbox one disc doesn't afford you a chance to play on PC, or download a PC variant?

  • No. You can't buy a physical Xbox disc and use it on your PC. You need to buy the more expensive digital version.
Also with the digital version you have Xbox Family sharing which allows members of your family to play your games too.

  • @sanni Not sure how entirely accurate this is, but it sounds right and I agree.

Ok wait.. it is right I mean you can't use an Xbox disc on PC and expect to get anywhere. But I believe that once installed on Xbox it accepts the licence and "MAY" be available for download from the MS Store after that so long as your on your account when accessing it.

I haven't tested this but it's possible, unlikely and probably wrong, but possible.

That said, the real thing I wanted to bring up is: If you do have the access to the game via gamepass it's all digital. They really shouldn't sell physical copies of this game, but it's an old and expected standard for many players still. Also, If you have digital access to the game you can play on your home Xbox and any family linked with your account can play on PC's up to who knows how high a number (I have had 4 active users on my gamepass access version - 3 PC and one Xbox) All that is truly required is that the game is installed under the primary user account initially on the PC's then it's just a matter of assuring your logging in with non duplicated accounts which are also family linked.

  • so my son can play form "home" xbox and I can play at the same time from my "away" xbox and we can sloop. but if he's on my PC, then that doesn't work.

  • I can 100% confirm you can play on Xbox AND PC from one digital key. You cannot use the same Xbox live profile though. So make sure the Xbox is set to be your "home" console, and log into SoT from a different profile. Then log in on the profile that "owns" the key on PC and you have no issues!

  • so basically if I want to play the game on pc not only do I have to pay 60 dollars for the game itself BUT I also have to get Xbox live, That is by far the biggest cash grab I've ever seen. So now if I want to play the game I'm paying 120 dollars in total just to play the game for a YEAR, two words to summarize F**K MICROSOFT, this is by far the greediest lowest way to make money it's so unbelievable. This is one of the reasons I switched to pc so I wouldn't have to pay to play with my friends, I'm already paying for internet so why do I have to buy your ridiculous pass.

That's incorrect. You don't need Xbox Live Gold to play on PC. You only need it to play on Xbox.

No mate. You just buy it and download the PC version. Job done.
Now that I have it on PC, I was able to download it again on Xbox using the same account.
My friend jumps on the Xbox using his gamer tag and I can play with him on my PC.

I only wish I knew about this before purchasing two copies. One for my son.
P.S. In Australia we paid $100 for each copy.

  • So I originally bought the disc version for Sea Of Thieves for Xbox One. If I buy the digital version for pc, will my data transfer to it?

  • @jdoslive Ahoy matey!

Yes, it will, your data is tagged to your Gamertag so as long as you sign back into the game with the same Gamertag you will have all of your stuff waiting for you, just where you left it!
