Trading Among Players and a Community Market

  • I've been super excited for this game for almost a year now and I can't wait for the full release. I know that it is quite late for a suggestion of this size, but I figure it’s better to get the idea out than to keep it to myself.

One thing that I have not seen discussed much (not at all recently) is the possibility of player to player trading. I have read threads about merchant ships and things like that where players can trade with NPC's, but that is not what I am proposing here.

One game that I sunk countless hours into was Team Fortress 2, and many of those hours were spent trading items in game. It was something that I found very fun and I would love to see it in a game like this. I feel as though this would go very well in the proposed "Safe Zones" that there is a megathread about. It would give players a place to go to trade their items and potentially profit from what they have in a different way. I have a few ideas for that as well that are posted in that thread. (The thread can be found here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/29122/mega-thread-safe-zones/360)

A player driven market will add a whole new layer to this game. It will give players a different reason to log on if they do not feel like sailing all day. It will increase community interaction and bring more players together.

A way to get more tradeable items into people’s hands is to make chests that people get from voyages unlockable (or openable, not like level yourself up to unlock it). Instead of turning them in for regular voyages and straight reputation/gold, players can crack open their chests themselves to get possible items. Have different rarities of items (all completely cosmetic) to add varying values of items to this market.

There may be reasons to not have this implemented at all and I would love to discuss with anyone.

  • I think that is a great idea, they could even tie it into micro-transactions. I can think of a couple of games this worked well in that could model the same system for SoT.

If you think about Fable how excited where you when you logged on and saw that someone had given you a gift. I know I always enjoyed it when I saw a gift in Fable. If they wanted to add some type of micro-transaction system into the game then make some chests locked. You have to go to a locksmith to get keys made to open them.

That would allow a great system for trading then, the players that are willing to pay to unlock special chests may get tired of some of their unlockable and want to trade it out. I also think of Balders Gate Dark Alliance where you could negotiate a trade of items for different prices/other items. So the players that are willing to pay to unlock chests could then negotiate a trade with someone who wasn't willing to spend real money by negotiating a trade of items or gold.

  • @ivorydoll rly guys a luck(loot)box sistem RLY...
look at the gamer communit today everyone hates loot boxes.
think for a second if i can steal your chest and ship why should i trade with you?
i support a communit market WITHOUT chest, only cosmetic itens that you already have(not reputation ones or buyable ones) you can only sell a item that you get in a boss drop, or some type of drop

  • @sternaltrack963 I am not promoting the ability to trade chests. I am stating that if Rare wanted to add a micro-transaction aspect to the game they could make certain chests that have to be unlocked with a key.

  • @ivorydoll even that is terrible wrong, loot box are horrible.
that game don't have a rpg like progression you can only buy skins for you weapons and ships. Rare can put anything to sell in micro-transaction,nothing is going to unbalance the game.

Yeah I agree with you on some of your points. I am not proposing that we trade chests as I would think that would complicate things too much. And I mentioned that the only things you should be able to get from chests should be cosmetic only. If you, for example, open a chest, you can treat that as a type of drop you get because it is essentially the same thing.

And I wouldn't say that everyone hates lootboxes. Yes I agree that the ones you can pay for to get an advantage of some sort is totally broken and not something I want anywhere near this game, but some type of system that rewards players cosmetics of varying rarities could be very good. Look at Overwatch as a game that does their lootboxes the right way. I'm not saying that we should add this exact system to Sea of Thieves, but if Rare ever did want to introduce something like that, there is a right way to do it.

  • I've also been VERY heavy on the trading and merchanting within Sea of Thieves,

If your willing to take the time, take a look at these 1, 2 for some more opinions on the topics (reminder that these are kind of old so either more about Sea of Thieves could've been revealed or my opinions could have changed).

But 100% Yes, Trading and allowing players to be merchants would help create a good ecosystem within SoT and let an economy build on its own.

Rest assured though, it shouldn't be too late!
I've been on this since the forums have started and I'm sure they have seen it.

  • This is a really good idea ... in the beta i had a bit of money and other friends where just starting out. I was thinking how cool it would b if i could buy an item and gift it to a friend
