anchor ideas

    1. cant use anchor in deeper waters

    2. if you use anchor at full speed you rip it off the ship or it needs some kind of repair/fix
maybe a big hole you need to fix

    3. anchor animation

    what do you guys think?
whoud it take fun out of the game?

  • Or if you need to upgrade anchor for deeper waters!

  • I feel like although it would in fact make the game feel a little more realistic, I don't think it's a great idea. It would take some of the fun out of game, it would also remove the ability to hard u-turn using the anchor, which I think is a lot of fun to do and really useful in some situations.

So yeah, not really feeling this. Sorry :)

  • wellp, you'd still be able to tokio drift, you'd just have to fix a hole or two after that tho.
I'm 100% on board with the anchor animation thing; in fact I'm upping this thread because the forum suggested it to me while I was going to open another one with the same topic.

I think that there are a couple of feature SoT could look at for inspiration both from real life and from Assassin's Creed Black Flag, specifically: an anchor you can use to climb up and down underwater faster than swimming, and that sort of weighted barrels to drop underwater to get air while exploring wrecks.

You're thinking of the diving bell (that was the animated one). Pretty sure the anchor itself was never even shown in Black Flag, and the entire process was a lot more quick and automated. Well either way, I think the diving bell would be a really cool feature and it would be fun to explore the depths.

As for the anchor system itself I like it the way it is now. Galleons are difficult to maneuver and the anchor U-turns is about the only thing that helps, at the price of a long delay to raise it back. Like they say if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

lol, yeah without that hard U-turn you can't smack crew mates off the very tip of the ship... I.E. when they're up there dancing or playing music, and not adjusting sails or whatnot, sail next to a rock, just far enough that when you U-Turn, the pike on the front of the ship clips through the rock and flings them into the ocean. While leaving the ship undamaged. Then you and the 3 remaining crew mates, quickly raise the anchor and sail away, leaving the lazy pirate bobbing in the sea!

YES, the diving bell, thanks. Not being a native english speaker has its challenges. Anyway, there were also actual barrels with rocks ties to them in which you could briefly breathe in, then they would sink, and if I don't have mnemonic hallucinations, there was an anchor, and you could use its chain to climb (but maybe that's another game). regardless, these would be all really cool features to see in the future, along with fish nets and maybe harpoons

  • @thephlave I wouldn't have remembered that either actually, just happened to replay Black Flag recently. The diving bell's chain is also the one you use to climb down. The air barrels too would be really good to have, tho considering this is a multiplayer maybe they shouldn't sink after breathing in them? I know that's not realistic but well, multiplayer is more chaotic that way.
Think I have read something about harpoons as well, as the guns are not supposed to work in water and they only did for the purpose of the beta. And of course fishing would be cool as well! Maybe we can even catch some rare items/treasure in those nets :D

  • @eukee i think at least a phisical anchor in game

Yeah I agree, a physical anchor you can see underwater/on the ship would be pretty cool.

  • though the 180 turn tactic is fun to use, it has become almost the default tactic to use in combat. i want to see more sailing combat maneuvers that do not involve the U-turn or completely revolve around its utility.

for example, i thought me and my crew lead this other crew's course straight into an island when we used the anchor turn. but then they used the anchor turn and avoided collision with the island, and as a bonus, their ship's cannons pointed right toward us and we sunk.

it's just about who can use the anchor turn better in most combat scenarios. damaging the ship in order to make this maneuver will be a great addition.

  • for a Captain over here that never use the anchor, I think some dmg. for making a U-turn is a great thing.
U can turn almost as quickly just raising the main sail first, and then the front and back sail while turning. and you have time for flipping the sails if its necessary.

That way take a lot more teamwork and communication. than just lower the anchor and raise it immediately

  • I think damage to your ship will not add anything to the game just get frustrating. I agree with the anchor animation but point 1 and 2 will get frustrating. I don't get why people bring that up everytime, you can shoot yourself out of a cannon, why should there be damage for dropping the anchor?

  • @coloridium well, I think the diving bell would require a specialized ship, since it's pretty huge. weighted barrells can be items like the chests you have to phisically pick up and throw overboard from any ship. They can be made inferior to the bell having a limited number of uses before empying out, and/or have a fixed sinking depth shallower than the bell (even though they could be made to sink at every use until a maximun of 3 usages, after which it just sinks to the ocean floor, and they have to be picked up and fished out to be able to reuse them).
I still think that a climbing mechanic on the anchor would be really useful.

@joda1123 I think that taking a couple of holes would balance what's a risky manouver that at this moment is kinda abused. it would only take away a couple seconds of one crew member to fix the hole/s

  • @stonkhammer yes thats somthing i've been waiting/hopeing for
