Was thinking if your ship is going slow enough and close enough to a pier there should be an option to dock. As nothing is more annoying than dropping the anchor miles away from an outpost or smashing into the island because your team mate believes he is a "ship god"
Option to dock ship when close to a pier.
@bristar0410 They kind of already made it easy. Notice how the sea is suddenly calm as you get close to land? Imagine docking if it was still thrashing about. You'll get it, just practice! Stay ahead of the ship, remember every input you give it, it takes a second or so to react!
Fun trying to get to dock in the most perfect way.
Also funny coming in hot, running ashore to cash with another ship in pursuit.
I drive boats....And can't seem to remember having an auto "dock" option. Just get more practice. I use to run my ship aground all the time in the game, but by the end of beta i could pull the sloop in nice and tight to pier and just walk off. Big ship harder mostly because when ordering shipmates to drop anchor they just stand there. lol
I'm assuming you're talking about something like the docking mechanic in Black Flag. Where you get close enough and hit something like A to just magically pull your boat into the dock?
I would have to disagree with having something like that. Part of the fun of Sea of Thieves is immersion and role playing a pirate. So learning how to dock is part of that. Once you learn the layout of an outpost and know where the main dock is, it becomes quite easy to dock right up against it. You have to learn how to manage the sails and the anchor timing for precise docking.

Second!
But T^T it is so much fun to hear my friends starting to scream like little school girls because they are so busy with talking that they forget to drop the anchor.
In the beginning of the beta docking the ship was difficult. But after a few days we got pretty good at it. A tip to help with turning your galleon more easily is to raise the middle sail.
I think being able to dock the ship without damaging it takes some time and skill. But once you are good at it it is not that bad :)
I think the way it is now is the best way, that brings more spice to the game.
All those failed docking when you just laugh or shout at your friend from dropping ancor to late or not at all haha.
Or those chases after ship which tries fast to drop chest on outpost before you catch them and steal them.
That makes it more challenging and not like auto pilot boring game in my opinion, the core of this game is sailing as much close to reality. Removing that removes the core idea of "realism" in game.@bristar0410 there should be some mooring rope to help it but IRL parking with a boat is hard AF and you need at last 2 people to cooperate to park it properly in 5-10minutes. sailing into harbor for docking is the hardest part of sailing. Me with my roleplay crew were perfectionists where we were docking the ship with a plank on pier so you can do it with some effort.
Reassuming mooring rope will help us ;)
@bristar0410 thats the fun of it ...when it goes wrong and yoy give ya mate stick for rubbish steering 😂

Pretty cool idea that. It's fun to try and manually dock, but having a little auto-dock would give you that nice feeling when you walk out and see your ship all neat and tidy waiting for you :D

Naw!
We don't need any auto-assist added to the game. Where's the fun in that?
It's fun bringin' her in on your own.
And with a little practice you'll be swinging her in there Tokyo Drift Style in no time! ;)Very true also lol. Tokyo drift, little smash, repair, job done.
I actually talked about this in my first forum post (link here). I think that docking boats should still be a skill, and effectively docking needs to be the responsibility of the player. However, I mention the implementation of ropes in the game, which add the option for tying a ship up to a dock. This way you don't have to unrealistically anchor every time you come in to port (I mean who does that?). This would allow for players to pull their boat in so it's right up next to the dock, but unless you plan on going through a lot of rope, you'd still have to get pretty close. In fact, you'd still have to get about as close as the average player does now when docking. Also there could be the option of having the ropes prevent players from stealing your boat, or at least make it harder.

Well since nobody took the time to post a docking tutorial here I'll write one up real quick
- Aim front of boat where you want to park
- Drop anchor as you begin to hit land
- Patch holes in the hull
- Remove water
- Stare in awe at how well you just docked your boat!
This.
Beginner Docking at it's finest. This is one of my earlier attempts and I also had to do it solo, as my crewmate did absolutely nothing.....
The key is to come in slow, with wide turns. The better the crew, the faster you can dock.@shadowstrider-7 said in Option to dock ship when close to a pier.:
