Inappropriate players

  • I was playing during the last day of the beta with two of my friends, one of my friends and myself are female which we aren't ones to make a big deal out of we are there to enjoy a game my problem is this. A ship started attacking us shooting at the first sight of us for once we were in game chat and were on talking on ship as soon as the other ship heard us and realized we were females they yelled "let's r**e them!" And followed us for half an hour. Later that same day we met what we thought was a friendly ship until they demanded we get on their ship because it was a "sausage fest" it made us very uncomfortable to the point my friend is considering canceling their pre order. We shouldn't be experiencing this in a game just because we are female or on game chat. Is there anything that can be done about this?

  • Those people are ignorant pigs you should have taken down their names and put them in this thread and report them and also they are a minority and the community is actually very friendly in general so dont let players like this ruin your experience

  • @crimsonwhispers yes. Seeing as how it's a Microsoft game and that behavior violates the CoC, you can report them. You just need the gamer tags of the players. Hopefully Rare adds in a Server Player List under the games menu.

  • If you have their GamerTags, I'd suggest reporting them for their behavior.

It is completely unacceptable for people to treat women that way. R**e is no joke and shouldn't be treated as one. I'm really sorry your friend is considering canceling her pre-order. I really wish things were different and I can't imagine the amount of similar c**p women can go through daily.

  • Im sure there will be a reporting system, And i am sure sexual Offenders will receive harsh punishments. During beta there isnt anything that can be done about disgusting people. except to mute their chat. However in teh future im sure rare will take action and be policing on their first day. I think it would be smart if rare send out a few teams of their own gamers during launch to just see how the world acts and maybe take action against players who act this way upon launch.

  • @crimsonwhispers Just to add to the comments above, I am really sorry that you and your friend had to experience this toxic behaviour.

But... it is one Rare and Microsoft take very seriously and both have a system in place to deal with this if you know their Gamertags use the support section on here and the Xbox app report link via that user's profile.

  • I didn't get them we were trying to get away from them the rest of the beta was fun ran into a lot of friendly players and flashing the lanterns helped met a lot of cool people. The last boat we let them on our ship they took what they wanted then sunk us we respawned on our new ship only for them to come after us again it made for a very unenjoyable experience

  • @crimsonwhispers I'm sorry you experienced that, I hope there's a report system in the future, but for now you can report them with Microsoft for their inappropriate behavior.

  • I love the game so far I thought it was really fun and can't wait to see what rare does with it once it's fully released but I'm not a fan of that kind of behavior who knows who else it's happening to unfortunately I didn't get their gamer tags and the recent players didn't update quickly in the Xbox menus we were more just trying to get away. I just wanted to bring this issue to light

  • I am the other player who was with crimsonwhispers when the other ship came up on us. There were 6 players on the ship. They demanded that we go with them. They emptied our supplies. We were told that we were not being asked and that we were going whether we wanted to or not. It happened so fast that there wasn't time to get names. When I declined, I was shot. If this is going to be the type of toxic community that's going to be established then I'll most likely cancel my pre-order.

  • It’s aweful to experience such behaviour. Every game has the fair share of people like this.

If I feel like reporting those that insist to communicate in such a way that violates the conduct of fair play, I normally take a screen shot of user names and report them.

Apart from that mute and blocking features are also useful.

  • I'm also not trying to make this a big deal with the whole we are girls thing it can happen to anyone any gender we just wanted to bring the issue to light with the pirate community to hopefully prevent it from happening more to others

You're right to raise awareness of the issue regardless. My friends and I abuse voice chat a bit too (not to that extent), but if we met up with them on here or matchmaking we'd be the friendliest pirates ever lol. Not saying everyone is like that but more often than not I think people just get a bit too excited in this game. I'm sure as time goes on these issues will be more and more isolated. Don't let it discourage your friend or yourself from playing the game in the future!

  • Thats so funny. Whats the problem?

You again and you don't seem to never disappoint me!
I'm sorry you experienced that OP... And I'm happy to see how many people rushed in here to express how they felt about this behaviour and how sorry they were even though they were not the guys involved. All hope isn't lost!

    Staf'

  • I'm really sorry you had to go through that. If you remember anything please let Rare know, or post the names here on the comment section, I'll try searching for the xbox gamer tags. Don't be dissuaded from playing the game by these people, they aren't exclusive to this game only. I do agree however, that something needs to be done about this such as flagging the player themselves in game (Even if they aren't from your crew). I hope we get to play with each other when the game comes out (Hopefully the game will be in a more civilized manner/state), see you soon in the seas lassie :)

  • I also am a female player and on the last night someone shouted "I need a woman to r**e" there was muffled laughter and I think he realised what he said after, so I took it no further. It took me unaware and in the heat of the battle I could not figure who said it. It's a great game and on all other occasions I haven't stopped laughing, but not then 😡

  • @barnicle-bee Do you remember the person in question's gamer tag?

  • Griefers and trolls are one thing, but actually verbalizing an intent to sexually assault someone is way over the line, even in jest or off the cuff RP.
MS reporting would be the best course for this in the future as well as trying to capture audio. In addition to muting and blocking. RARE can take a firmer stance and implement bans within their own game if they develop a reporting feature, they can't affect consequences on the platform provider side unfortunately.
I am sorry that this incident happened to you and your friends.
Perhaps the instigators should do a bit of research on Anne Bonny or Mary Read before they start hurling insults at female pirates. ;)

  • Jesus, people are gross. Players who are that level of disrespectful should be permabanned.

  • @winglezzangel @CrimsonWhispers Echoing what other's have said, I'm really sorry this happened. Thankfully, such unforgivable favor has been the exception not the rule in this community.
It is possible you may have the names of the offending player in your recent players list, but this has not been very reliable. You do not have to put up with this. It is unacceptable and offenders lose their ability to play online for it.

  • Aye my friend. I am very sad to read this from a person experimenting a game for the first time. If i can say, the crossplay with Xbox and PC will bring a lot of young people that have no respects to the others. I know the feeling even if i am a man. If i can suggest to the developer, that would be to work on a quick setup similar to "Grand theft auto" invulnerability. You are full protected agaisnt other pirates but you cannot attack neither. OR, they could add a kind of radius around "Outposts" so they would be secured. OR if a pirate is sinking the ship more than once, a Navy ship could chase them.

However, i just hope this bad experience won't let you think to be out of the game. Females are always welcomed to this game equal as males. Cheers!

  • @crimsonwhispers Wow. I am a single father with two daughters. They love playing on their Xbox. I would lose my mind if I heard something like this come across the speakers. You seriously need to report the offenders. People hiding behind online anonymity assume it is OK and funny. Next time catch the names and post them, a little public shaming may fix the issue.

  • @crimsonwhispers I appreciate your post. The last night of the beta I got another copy of the game for my wife and sister and the three of us played together! It was so much fun amazing on our new 4K tv!! We ended up with a very respectful deckhand to complete our group of 4. Most groups we encountered were fun to PVP. We did however meet a group of two who were very angry with us shouting obscenities, and cursing. We muted them of course but the things they said still upset me more than the ladies. I didn’t know you could report them but will do now! Hope to see you on the sea’s

  • People keep repeating "report them, report them" but how?
We have no tools in game to report players over voice chat, we have no idea what sort of information Microsoft/Rare would find useful enough to gather actual data/evidence.
People can yell obscenities and it be impossible to tell which pirate said it if you ran into a group. A couple of these scenarios have already been described. What if I run into a player named 0IOl1o11ll00o? How do I even figure out what letters/numbers I'm looking at while he is jumping around trying to murder me or on a ship constantly moving?

How is this reporting supposed to happen in any useful manner? Toxicity is going to be a serious problem in this game if nothing is done.
Toxicity is still an issue in other games that feature PvP, even when the game contains a report system.
Being generous, I'd say 50% of my matchmaking experience in this game was awful due to these types.
I'd wager near 100% of Rare's long time fans love them for the inviting and atmospheric nature of their games.

Online Interactions are not Rated by the ESRB.

Don't take things too seriously, thousands of people have Xbox live, it would be impossible to go on a witch hunt for them all. And do not think it is just Sea of Thieves.

They are not rated, no, but this behavior is a violation of the terms of service. This is not a witch hunt, it is removing problem players from hurting others.

You have to report them outside the game, unfortunately. If you have their gamertag you can report them on their profile page. There is also a spot in Rare's support options for reporting toxic players.
Microsoft can't do anything unless we report them. Just because this blight affects most games does not mean we should be silent.

  • about all u can do in a beta when it comes to people like that is mute them and shoot them in the face if u get away turn in and log out and back on and hope for a server with out kids like that even if they was not kids they should act better then that for sure

lets hope they have a way to report people like that in game

In game, you are correct I saw no way to do that. I don't know how RARE or SoT wants to handle this, but it's an issue they'll need to get in front of. My experience with WarGaming-WoT console for these issues is putting in a support ticket with attached video/audio evidence and explanation. On the Xbox side it's easy to report another player through their gamertag, though you have no way of providing any evidence.

  • I'm very sorry that happened. The open style chat system i believe was designed for closer communication between players, reminiscent of the old arcade days. I think maybe reporting their behavior to Microsoft live may be the best option. If you happen to recall some gamertag names. I would like to see that behavior banned entirely from MLive altogether. I joined a club on Sea of thieves that encourages good, fair, and fun values. We also tend to stress "trolls" into finding another match due to our vast player pool. Please try and report it though, I dont wanna see people leave that have same rights as everyone else.

  • That's awful. Honestly I don't think proximity chat is good for the game. I avoid is completely if I can.

Rare please give an option to turn off proximity chat. It's not like it gives people an unfair advantage... Many of us use discord anyway.

  • I really wish I knew the gamertags but sadly in the event everything moved so fast i was unable to get the names I could search my recent players list but I don't want to just guess because there are also awesome people we encountered. Thank you to everyone for the support we were disgusted by what happened

This. If stuff like this happens then those players should be publicly called out and removed from the game

  • @dr-farce DAMN RIGHT !!!

  • @crimsonwhispers if it helps any, the recent players list on the Xbox App for Windows is listed most recent first...although it is still horribly wonky...maybe a name would ring a bell?

either way, it is beyond awful that people feel the need to 'joke' this way, and worse, think it is acceptable/funny

  • @barnicle-bee same it's an amazing game and I loved exploring islands and sailing and love the water but this kind if behaviour is unwanted especially the ones who did it to us sounded like older guys in their late teens or older they wernt kids which is sad
