There should never be Castaway's Chests for complicated riddles

  • So yesterday the last day of the beta, I managed to get the Gold Hauler rank with the Gold Hoarders (this is the rank you can buy once you are level 20+ with them)

I embarked on the longest voyage I could buy from them and it promptly gave me 6 maps.
4 of these 6 maps were riddles.

What happened at 2 of the riddles is that I got a Castaway's Chest out of it. That's the least valuable one I came across so far, netting only ~50g.
For one of those 2 riddles it took me 20+ minutes to solve it. Seeing as it was rather cryptic and the landmark in question was well hidden.

Bear in mind, this all happened at the Gold Hauler rank which requires you to be at a reputaion level of 20+

Getting a mere 50 gold out of that is just sloppy design in my opinion. The riddles generally take a lot more effort than treasure maps and only ever yield a single chest.
In comparrison, the 2 treasure maps I received with the voyage each had 4 chests on them. And only a single one of those 8 chests was a Castaway's Chest.

Please fix this. Balancing effort and reward her will make solving riddles much more rewarding. Instead of wishing it was a map instead.

  • I think you might be wrong.

Did you happen to buy the golden shovel? The golden compass?

I did yesterday. And let me tell you their descriptions are right on par. I dug up 3 chests and got not one chest below grogs in terms of level.

  • @paloosecannon if you die, do you lose it like they stated?

  • @paloosecannon I don't know what you mean about the shovel and the compass but I had both of them too.

  • My assumption is it is random. I know plenty of folks who have pulled a Captain's chest (in some cases several). I never did, and I played several hours during the beta. I don't believe the compass and shovel are anything but cosmetic. I pulled tons of marauder chests, chest of sorrows and chest of 1000 grogs. Lots of castaway and seafarer...but not a single captains chest!

  • I can see where you’re coming from. I’ve also had some difficulties finding certain landmarks. However, you do have 6 maps, so it could be argued that having more chests balances out the lower gold return.

It is indeed just cosmetic, just like any other object you could buy in the beta (except the blunderbuss of course)

Any by the way, we got 4 or 5 captains chest from one 25-reputation-6-map voyage yesterday. They might be more common on higher levels, but i can't confirm that. Just feels like it.

  • @lotharlive Yep, I can agree with this. You make a solid point.

Item descriptions are just added flair.

Items don't work like that in this game.

  • @frostycrypton my point is that any riddle in itself is more effort than a treasure map and since the treasure maps can also have up to 4 chests and a riddle only ever one there is a clear imbalance here.

  • Did a voyage.. where i spent 60 gold on the voyage .. got 1 chest. voyage over. sold chest got 41 gold for it.. doesn't seem right some how.. feel like i got cheated by the gold hoarder guy.. did he keep a tip?

  • The way it works now is actually really, really good in comparison to past iterations. Basically, the higher level voyages you have, the greater the "weighting" is for higher rarity chests. So you will see a lot more legendaries and mythicals at level 20 and 25 quests than you will at the earlier ones. However, it's still random to an extent. You can get common chests at level 25, and you can get sorrows at level 1, they are just weighted to not happen as often. You also get way more maps, islands, and X's on the higher level voyages.

  • @dark-shadow9056 never found out because I didn’t die. Only had them together for the last day of beta.

  • @tre-oni perhaps, maybe even most likely.

However due to my personal experience with them both on the last day I will be purchasing them as quickly as I can.

By the way, I failed to mention that my shipmate did pull up a chest in the middle of this multipart voyage, and he pulled a castaway.

I also have the impression it works like that.
It would make sense though to weight riddles heavier than maps in my opinion!

  • I think all the riddles(and X on maps) should be a lot more difficult, right now it's on a kids level. But mabye thats the point?
It should feel very rare to find a chest. Right now it wont really matter if you get the chest back or not, it's just to go out and do another voyage. Absolutely no challenge whatsoever to find chests. Just go from point A to B, pick up the chest and back to A.

  • @lotharlive I agree it can be disappointing to have castaways chest for such a lvl gold hoarder. I was lvl 17 or a little more I think and castaway chest were still frequent. But it would be kinda boring if you just got legendary chest all the time. But as I see it you got 10 chest of which 3 were castaway chests so it's not that bad. You got a lot of gold out of that voyage compared to what you paid for. It would be a little bit unbalanced if we got more gold single voyages because just in the closed beta I already unlocked so much items and clothing in 5 days... ps I 'm sure Rare needs to tweak the probabilities of looting different types of chest . Have a nice day mate !

I think it will be boring after some time if you know which chest you will get.

  • @gulpee-rex thats exactly what I said. but they will add more chest types in the future that will compensate for that issue.

  • @dzeenk I'm not complaining that there are Castaway's Chests there in general, it's just much easier and faster to do the maps and you seem to have the same chances for both riddles and maps. Even though you might spend much more time/effort on a riddle.
