Performance on slower hardware

  • The developers asked in the close beta announcement to discuss running the game on weaker machines but I could not find a matching topic in the forum, so I opened a new thread.

I am pleased how good "Sea of Thieves" works on my original Surface Book with i7 dual core CPU and GeForce 940M GPU. The resolution of 720p in combination with the art work looks well enough on the 13,5" screen. Locking the frame rate to 30 fps does not hurt slow game play. I could increase it but I do not want to set the lighting lower than "common". And setting the water to "rare" is quite nice, too. The frame pacing then is not perfect and there are spikes but overall it is a comfortable experience.

I published a video on YouTube testing various configurations.

  • I tested it on my aging, but well maintained, Thinkpad.

Unfortunately, the Nvidia GT 620M 2GB could not cut it. This PC can run Crysis 2, Tomb Raider 2013, and Battlefield 3; all at settings above the PS3/360. Usually 720p, medium-low settings at 30fps.

Sea of Thieves, even at 540p and Cursed settings, could not reach 30 FPS. Averaging around the low twenties by the looks of things. GPU usage was 100%.

I'm assuming Dx11 is partly to blame here, since the card doesn't like it despite technically supporting it. But I was a bit dissappointed my potatoe couldn't run the game at 720p 30fps.

  • @lightrocker I remember @TEDDY-25 commenting on a thread that he would be interested in reading feedback such as this, thank you for posting!

  • @lightrocker how many fps can i get on this game?

    My System:
    -Sapphire R7 265 DUAL-X GDDR5 2GB 256Bit AMD Radeon DX11.2 Ekran Kartı
    -AMD FX X6 6300 Soket AM3+ 3.5GHz 14MB Önbellek 95W 32nm İşlemci
    -Kingston 120GB V300 Serisi Sata 3.0 Cache SSD (Okuma 450MB / Yazma 450MB)
    -CORSAIR 16GB (4x4GB) Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400MHz CL11 Ram
    -WD 3.5" 1TB Caviar Blue SATA 3.0 5400Rpm 64MB Cache Harddisk
    -ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AMD 970/SB950 AM3+ DDR3 2133MHz (O.C.) Anakart

  • @unclearmuffin35 I cannot tell you but I tried to compare your desktop GPU with my laptop GPU using benchmarks from the internet and it seems that graphics wise you should receive similar results to my Surface Book. So 30 fps should be the target but you may get a higher frame rate when you decrease the resolution and quality.
