I think it'd be a great accessory to be able to buy a parrot that sits on your shoulder. When you have it equipped, it'd be nice to have a 3rd set of choices when you push up on your dpad (communications) that are spoken by the parrot.
Suggestion: Parrot for your shoulder
Welcome to the Forums!
If you want an idea to be seen much more easily, please use the search function at the top to go and support someone else with a like-minded idea and maybe fill in the places where they didn't. You could search either 'pet' or 'parrot' and I'm sure you'll find something.
Remember that this is not the full game currently and this is pretty much a 100% thing come launch.
@fantus Thank you for your suggestion. However, this is not the first time a single topic has inspired multiple threads and I don't feel like I'm violating forum rules. Also I realize the game is not yet finished. I was an Alpha tester and now I'm a Beta tester and I feel giving my feedback and suggestions is what Rare is expecting of me.
Your reply to my post sounds to me like you're saying my thread is misplaced, where as you say nothing about the topic of my thread making your comment much more counter-productive than you claim my thread to be.
@quickthumb Oh don't take anything bad out of this, Your not breaking any rules and I'm not tying to be aggressive or anything, the new influx of players has basically caused the forums to be heavily diluted by a lot of the same stuff, this could be negated and the forums could be kept much cleaner if people were to just reply in more popular threads.
No rules have been violated and I know you should obviously be giving critique and feedback for the game, its just a neatness thing (and for helping new members navigate etc).
No harsh feelings!

I understand. It's all good matey.
Hmm, you've put me in mind of a post that was on the forums a long time ago, but which is excellent and I'm not sure we have access to it at the current time, however, I've managed to find a cached copy of it - How about one of these beasties :D
@rum-sam said in [IDEA] Introducing Parrots! - For Recon and Communication:
What is a Pirate game without Parrots? I can't imagine the game not featuring them as a cosmetic item - but I am hear today to explain to you how they could be used functionally too!
-
Anyone can have a parrot, but only the owner of the ship will bring theirs on a voyage.
-
They sleep in a cage bellow deck, in the same room as the map and will say pirate phrases when approached.
-
If they die, they can be re-spawned from the parrot merchant.
-
Parrots can be sent off to scout for other ships.
-
They will search in a circle, your ship being at the centre.
-
Recon will take 3 minutes, when the parrot returns, any spotted ships will be marked in red on the map. (The direction the ship was facing is also shown.)
-
There is no way of telling when the ship was spotted - All you know is that there was a ship at this point sometime recent. They may have moved on from that point - So players will have to try and predict where they will be now.
-
Depending on the weaponry in the game, it may be possible to shoot down parrots scouting you out.
Progression is key, a captain can upgrade their parrot at select vendors.
-
Certain upgrades are limited to certain merchants, to encourage exploration - you can't just buy all your gear from the one shop.
-
You can only have 4 talents active on your parrot at any given time. By limiting talents it means players cannot have a 'god parrot'
-
Talents can only be changed at parrot merchants, meaning you will have to plan accordingly depending on your current objective.
Icon Info --SPEED UPGRADE - 3 Levels, decrease recon time by 20s (2:40/2:20/2:00) --RANGE UPGRADE - 3 Levels, Increase the range the parrot scouts. --HIGH FLYING - Your parrot flies high above the skies, other crews will not be able to see your parrot when scouting. --INTEL - Your parrot can now determine how many players are onboard each scouted ship. --WEATHER - Your parrot can operate in any weather, even storms! --SLEEP - 3 Levels, reduce the cooldown between recons... your parrot sleeps less! --BRONZE TALONS - Will attack enemy parrots trying to scout you! 50% chance to stun foreign parrots, stunned parrots will return incorrect information to their captains. --STEEL TALONS - Upgrade from Bronze Talons - Will attack enemy parrots trying to scout you! 50% chance to kill enemy parrots. --Protection - 3 levels - Chance to avoid parrot attacks and reduced damage from player attacks.
Other:
- You could upgrade the cosmetics of you parrot (for the right price): Mini Pirate hat? Gilded cage?
- You could change the skin of your parrot, seems obvious... however little details like players using a white parrot to represent peace (Peace Dove, White Flag) could emerge.
- Skeleton parrot anyone?!
The second, exciting, possibility for parrots is communication.
Parrots could be used to send messages to nearby ships - as a friendly gesture or a fearsome warning!
It would go as follows:
- Ships within eye range of your ship will show up green on the map.
- Next to the map, is a ledger - you can rip off some paper, which will open a GUI where the player can write a message onto the slip.
- Upon exiting the GUI, the player can place the slip onto the map - at one of the green ship icons.
- If there is a message on the map, the parrot can be clicked and will select on of the slips to deliver.
- Delivered messages will be placed in a pile next to the ledger.
- No recon information will be gained from the parrot during it's delivery.
-
@musicmee Absolutely agree - luckily found it on Google which probably says a lot about the time since i cleared my history haha
