How many would prefer a 3rd person choice?

  • I know this has been discussed too much, therefore I don't want to go into details, both have pros and cons, in my case motion sickness, therefore I really can't and won't buy the game, although I really loved it!

So how many of you would appreciate the option for 3rd person?

  • @saukerl-x I'm sorry to hear about your sea-sickness but having third person in the game would change many gameplay mechanics for the worse - you'd no longer need someone looking out for rocks because you'd be able to see all around your ship, you wouldn't need someone in the crows nest keeping their eyes peeled for a ship on the horizon because again, you can see all around your ship, it'd be harder to sneak up on people because yet again, you can see all around your player. This game is supposed to provide an immersive pirate experience and having third person would take away from that immersion. If you're asking for a vote it's a hard no for me; perhaps the developers can compromise by putting a white dot in the middle of the screen to give sea-sick players something steady to keep their eyes on whilst their feeling sick. I hope you change your mind and reconsider pre-ordering, there's going to be so many more things to enjoy when the game releases :)

  • I would be opposed to 3rd person mode.

When using 3rd person it's too easy to hide behind obstacles, around corners or behind walls and still "abuse" the camera to allow you to see other players while it is literally impossible for them to see you.

With 1st person mode the only way you can see other players is by peeking out from whereever you are hiding, which means they can also see you.

This makes it more fair when it comes to sneaking up on someone or setting an ambush.

I used to play Planetside 1 with 3rd person option and I can't even count how many kills I got from standing behind a corner, abusing 3rd person camera to see enemies approaching and then side-strafe out in front of them and oneshot them to death with a shotgun (the NC J********r triplebarrel shotgun).

In Sea of Thieves, with 3rd person, the number 1 tactic would be hiding behind a corner, use 3rd person, and once they are close you step in front of them with a blunderbus and one-shot them.

I like that it is 1st person. Feels more immersive and keeps the playing field even as far as hiding and ambushing goes so noone has an unfair advantage over others just because of a magic, elevated camera.

  • @saukerl-x
Have you tried changing the FOV to max? I do this and it helps a lot.
My girlfriend gets really bad motion sickness usually from watching gameplay but with max FOV it's almost gone.

  • Definitely a no to third person from me for the reasons mentioned above.

  • @spunkus-skunkus i agree!

Yes, I set FOV to max, otherwise I couldn't play at all! It's still very displeasing!

While I understand all of your arguments for 1st person, this is not a shooter or PUBG and most of your issues and advantages could be easily avoided and limited technically. I know this is probably not going to happen, but I don't think it's such a gamebreaker.

Out of the 5 people I play most with, 5 won't touch SoT because of 1st person. Even ex hardcore Halo fans who now prefer 3rd person.

  • not me i prefer First person all the way

  • @saukerl-x I can't stand the 3rd person view. It kills the immersion for me,, makes it cheap peeking around corners, and generally makes me think of console games. The only scenario where I like 3rd person is when the game is designed to be viewed from the side or from afar (i.e. platform arcade games etc.)

  • @saukerl-x
They want it to be really immersive and that wouldn't happen with the 3rd person view, it's unfortunate for some people but it doesn't make sense for the game :(

  • I think it's fine the way it is, if you want to see your guy just sit down. They must have a sound reason why they didn't give the option for both.

  • I would.

  • That won't happen, people will use the over shoulder cam to gain an advantage... have you ever played dayz?

  • I don't understand why people wanting only 1st persons are answring in a thread where its beeing asked who would like 3rd person , why don't you avoid posting at all since its not on that the topic?

  • @saukerl-x I would welcome more 3rd person options at least. I'm finding I have little interest in cosmetic clothing items because for the majority of the time, I can't see my pirate (which is possibly just as well at the moment because he's extremely weatherbeaten to say the least).

  • Yesterday I managed to latch onto the ladder of a galley just as they set sail and took off. I was able to hold on to the side of their ship all the way to their destination without them even noticing me. They were shocked when I jumped aboard and tried to steal their loot. Heck I failed but had a lot of fun doing it.

Now add in 3rd person and this suddenly doesn't become an option. People would easily see me on the side of the ship. As third person makes things easier to see your surroundings, people would feel pressured to play that way just to get an advantage, ruining the atmosphere and fairness of a first person perspective.

For the above reason, I don't believe there is any 3rd person option that would not ruin the game.

Sorry about your motion sickness though, must be pretty hardcode motion sickness. What a shame. Would it still effect you even if you were playing on a small screen or if you moved away from the screen when the seas get rough?

  • @saukerl-x I am sorry to hear about the motion sickness this game can give you and I have experienced it as well, but i would have to say that the feeling of immersion this game gives me is because its in First Person. And i would be worried if they changed it, that it wouldn't feel so real to me, especially when we are sailing. And because of that immersion in this beautiful world, I cant help but want to log back in everyday.

because we dont want to give RARE the idea its a feature that is actually wanted by people taht are actually going to play this game

on that note, I too think 3rd person would ruin this game

  • @doxthafox I know exactly what you mean! :) Quite Addictive, I'd call it Pirate PUBG! :)

In my case it's especially disturbing when moving arround on an island or running up and down on the ship. Digging is extremely wicked and getting stuck on a door, stairs, etc. and moving backwards. Although I completely understand all of your preferring 1st person, I think most of the valid arguments against 3rd person could be limited. It depends on how far and where the actual 3rd person point of view would be located. I wouldn’t even mind certain parts to be 100% 1st person, if they would give the option to "undock“ your point of view from your pirate or his movement.

The feeling some others obviously also get from 1st person is really nasty and ruins all the fun in the game. Sadly it seems my pirate will die alone, unknown and without any gold and grog in the SoT matrix! :(

Because we disagree and want it to be heard?

I know many people enjoy living in echochambers and only have to read or hear ideas and suggestions they agree with, but a game forum during the pre-release of a game people will express their opinions and argue against things they disagree with.

This also helps the developer get a better understanding of the reasons why someone is pro, or con, towards different things that are suggested.

  • I'm against 3rd person.

  • Put me down for 3rd person. I really hate first person games.

  • @saukerl-x I would but not for play, I would like to sea a vanity camera mode, like the one ARK has.

  • @mercen-one said in How many would prefer a 3rd person choice?:

@saukerl-x I would but not for play, I would like to sea a vanity camera mode, like the one ARK has.

You kind of have that already. Just use the pirate emote menu and use "Dance", "Clap", "Sit" or any other emote and you can pan your camera around to see your character in 3rd person.

  • @happyg-v2 Unfortunately it seems there will be no 3rd person, therefore I will say good bye and let my pirate walk the plank and sing his last chantey!

Maybe some day I can "Hornswaggle" a 3rd person option out of someone on the development team, maybe hidden just for a hand full of worthy pirates! Until then I'll stay "Landlubber"! Jo Ho Ho!

  • Unfortunately third person would make everything about the ship mechanics redundant and cause ship combat to be much easier as you could see everything on deck at all times instead of having to look around.

It would also make the need for the pilot of the ship to communicate redundant, the crows nest redundant, and that would totally kill both the game and the immersion within.

  • That corner peeking argument is s**t. Since SoT has no crosshair, aiming in 3rd P would be a pain in the a**e, what makes up for the so called "tactical advantage". Thus most battles are fought either on huge distance or in close combat. I have not yet seen anyone hiding behind a barrel or someting like that. And if it really needs to be, the game could force you in 1st P whenever you equip a weapon . So again: give the players their freedom of choice and stop being childish like "I want others to play as I want it". 3rd P f*w!
