Will a treasure chest left on an island survive using a mermaid?

    I was playing on a solo sloop yesterday and something came up that made me curious.
    I'd dug up a Chest of 1000 Grogs on Crescent Island and decided to leave it next ot a pier and just go get my boat since walking back across the island was annoyingly slow.
    I arrived to find a galleon approaching and foolishly tried to get to my ship and make a quick getaway – naturally, they shot me to pieces.
    Eventually I just found a mermaid and respawned out of there, dumping the chest into the sea.

    What I'm wondering is:
    Using the mermaid restarts the voyage (the riddle sends you to a different island) – but if I had left the chest hidden on the island, since I'd already dug it up, could I have sailed back to find it again?

    I know it stays on land for a decent amount of time. I'm not sure how long precisely but I've come back to them 10-15 minutes later. A chest floating in the water however, seems to have a much shorter lifespan. No idea how long though, if anybody has a rough timespan that would be awesome.
