Where did my chests go?

  • Can anyone shed some light on how long items stay in the world?
My crewmate sank, with several chests on board, luckily we swam back out, grabbed them and left them all on the shore.

As my crewmate re-spawned the ship and sailed back to get me, another ship attacked and sank us and took me out on the island (I'd had the common sense to hide the chests in the thick bushes).

we respawned and chased them to an outpost, and and watched them unload two basic chests, so they obviously didn't find ours.

we sailed back to the island and all our chests were gone.

I assume they vanish after a set time?

Perhaps another crew sailed by and stole your chests? Either that or your chests despawned. I'm not sure of the exact timing for this as the despawn timer is different for chests on land vs ones in the water.

  • Definitely wasn't another crew. We got back to the island almost immediately and followed the crew to the outpost one island over. Spun straight back round and was back at the location in a few minutes. No crews about no chance they'd have been randomly found.

Rare, can you advise? I don't want to consider hiding chests a tactic if they're gonna vanish lol.

  • I'd be interested in knowing the answer to this. For example if your on an island looking for treasure and an opposing ship saunters by and sinks yours, can you hide your loot, catch a mermaid and return to collect the chest afterwards?

I have never done this personally, but others have told me it is doable. Take that as you will as it is hearsay.

Sounds like your chests were taken I'm afraid I have went back for hidden chests an hour and a half later after a rather intense chase and fight. Managed to get back to them. People are being more thorough when searching for random chests as their spawn rate is higher at the moment and they are better hidden.

That being said there are a few bugs in the game currently with is unfortunate but not too much to get bothered by as when the full game is released our gold will be reset anyhow. Frustrating yes but certainly not the end of playing for me 😊

This is good to know (although not in sirbats case ;) ).
I've been wary of leaving chests around up till now. It would be a great idea if you could rebury the chest and create your own map for future reference.

  • I tested this during a previous session so I don't know for sure if it's still the case...

Chests in the water start to slowly sink after a few minutes. When they touch the ocean floor they despawn (though an intangible unselectable chest object can be left behind until you leave the area and come back).

If you place a chest where it isn't floating (Island, rock, or on top of a shipwreck) as far as I can tell it doesn't despawn. When I was testing it I travelled across to the other side of the map and back, killed myself, and sunk my ship but the chests I placed were all still there.

Was unable to test what happens if someone kills you when you are holding a chest.
