Steps for going undefeated in PVP in Sea of Thieves.
Harken to me bilge rats! Ever pull up that sweet chest from the ground only to have it ganked by some scrubs you weren’t expecting? Well generaldort has the medicine for you. My crew and I aboard the ‘Missy Elliot’ haven’t lost a single battle and we probably won’t for a long time at this rate. Here’s what we do (feel free to implement these strats so you can sail like a legend):
-
Find crew members that have ADHD, are loyal, and hilarious to play with. I kid about the ADHD but it’s really key in this game to be able to do a few things at once; especially pull security and keep an eye out for potential enemies.
-
When going ashore, travel light. Only bring 2-3 bananas and ensure you dump off everything else in the ship before you disembark. The reason is so you can acquire more supplies for your future fights.
-
Always leave one person on the ship! Nothing is a bigger kick in the jimmies then when your ship with 10 chests on it gets worked like a Thai h****r while you watch on helplessly from the island. Leave someone aboard who is periodically using the spyglass from the crows nest, trimming the sails for an easy escape, loading cannons, and using the sniper rifle to kill sharks so you don’t end up on the next installment of ‘Shark Week’. Don’t be a statistic people!
-
Orient your map to the north with your compass. It’s an easy thing to do, just remember to use that tried and true technique to get your treasure fast. If you have enemy players on you then you need to be quick.
-
General Quarters/Battle Preparation. When battle is imminent, everyone needs to get loaded to the gills with cannonballs, planks, and bananas. You don’t want to engage in a broadside duel and suddenly must go below deck in the first 10 seconds of the fight to restock. Also, everyone needs a primary job if things get real. If you have a deadeye on the cannon then you found your primary gunnery guy, assign a damage control person, and a sail trimmer. Everyone must understand each role and be prepared to do it all depending on the situation. For example, when a perfect broadside is present then everyone should be on the guns delivering splintering blows to the enemy.
-
Battle Mast. When in battle or when you’re about to engage a stationary ship it’s important to reduce the sail area you present. The foremast (front) and mizzenmast (rear) should be completely furled up. The mainmast (middle) should be furled up 25% to reduce speed, facilitate faster turns, and allow the Captain to see clearly during the engagement.
-
Anchoring. Dropping an anchor at full speed with full rudder to each side will create violent turns by the ship which can be beneficial or terrible depending on the situation. During engagements with stationary ships it’s best to just give slight turns away from the target while dropping the anchor so you have the best chance to bring all your guns to bear on their waterline.
-
Anticipate sailing angles. Realize which direction you’re going, anticipate the sail trim needs for the journey with the wind presented, and execute your tack/jibe accordingly. It helps to have a little sailing knowledge to make this all really work well. Sailing is a team sport people!
-
Parlay. We hold up people we meet on the high seas and give them the option to spare their lives if they follow us on twitch. This has led to some of the most hilarious exchanges I’ve ever seen in years of gaming. Try and parlay occasionally and see what happens! But always be prepared to nuke the b******s if they double cross you.
-
Leave lanterns on in the ship if you’re picking a fight for attention, put them out if you have tons of chests on board and you want to minimize attention.
-
If you’re being chased and want to get away you have some options. Be better at sailing and therefore faster than your opponent. Engage in some broadsiding to force them to fix their ship so you can escape. Parlay into a truce.
-
Get some swag, and a blunderbuss. Because who doesn’t like shooting glass and nails at people? Treat yourself don’t cheat yourself I always say.
-
Practice cannon aim often with excess ammo. Shoot on the move and stationary to really get a feel for the guns. There’s definitely a learning curve to it. Don’t let combat be the only times you pull the trigger!
-
Follow us all on twitch to see the crew of the Missy Elliot in action! “IS THAT YO SHIIIIIPPPPP!?” And to get a good laugh.
