Strange ship combat practice

  • I find myself getting in a situation where after a few volleys the enemies just end up sailing away from me, not disengaging mind you, and have some of there crew jump off the ship and try to board my ship. I have no problem with people boarding my ship but rather that they can jump off their ship and teleport back to their ship without much penalty. In the amount of time they are in the water they have little risk of sharks and can just teleport back before its a problem.

If there was a greater risk of sharks in open water or a longer and longer wait time on the mermaid depending on how often you use it to teleport back I feel like it would make it much less of a primary tactic and encourage closer combat.

  • This is quite a good point. I tried to board another ship during combat and found no penalty when I missed as the merman appeared instantly enabling me to return to my ship without any problems. Whilst it made it no problem to return to my ship and the game continued to flow seamlessly I did feel that there was no danger to firing yourself into the depths or falling off the ship.

  • Not sure how they're making a pirate game without doing research into other pirate games.
Blackwake have ship combat down to a T.
If you grapple the enemy ship it turns into a deathmatch boarding fight, spawns get blocked out for over a minute+ for both your team and the enemy team to stop infinite respawns and the winning team sinks their ship.

You should also be able to damage masts to slow / stop other ships, bizarre that this isn't included.

  • I think a players inventory should be wiped once a mermaid is used. This would act as a penalty as you'd lose resources.

  • @shadowstrider-7 That could be a potential solution.

But the next step in this meta is of course jumping off your ship with no resources, boarding the enemy ship stealing the wood planks, cannons, bananas, and jump right back off without even attempting to fight. Again this is a pirate game I am all for stealing stuff from the enemy but this tactic is too far from reality and doesn't promote an enjoyable game play experience.

  • I agree. Definitely introduce boarding tools. Throw the ropes and pull the other ship close. Also let you cut the ropes in order to get free. The penalty for what is mentioned above should be a longer respawn time for the mermaid. Also loosing every cannonball / planks plundered. But for this, a ship need to have a bigger crew in the first place.

  • This is genius...

The sense of shame has limited my strategic thinking...

  • @chassitchussit I cant help but take advantage of game mechanics, I'm an awful person haha which is why I ask for a system that promotes better play.

  • @drmiller357 the ability to pull up the rope ladders on either side of the ship could help solve this also.

  • @shadowstrider-7 Yea I like that. Perhaps being able to shoot the ropes to drop them could be a mechanic. In that case at least you would know if an enemy was trying to board your ship and would be a difficult thing to do floating in the water. While taking cannon fire from ship to ship combat it would probably happen naturally.
