Large Crews Attacking Single Crewed Ships

  • Is it just me, or is it not really "fair" that a fully crewed ship is able to attack the single crewed ships? I just think it is not very sporting. What chance does that one player have? I am pretty sure this same ship was stocking me today and sinking me just for the fun of it, as every time I had no chests worth stealing. It is not like I put up much of a fight as it was 4 against 1. Heck, they did not even kill me, just sink the ship.

I am not mad about it happening. In fact, one time I think I got one of them so I would be a liar to say I did not enjoy it a little. I just think it will prove detrimental to the game if this continues. It leaves it unbalanced and other players will not take it in good stride.

    Any thoughts on this?

  • Isn't the 2 player boat the same as the single player boat? So it's not like the big crew would know whether you were a single or a duo. People also don't have x-ray vision, there is no way to know if you have treasure without boarding you.

The description under the solo ship also tells you the journey will be more perilous and that it's only recommended for the most experienced pirates. Also pirates aren't exactly the "sporting" type.

  • Also, as it just happened to me, there's nothing like respawning to 2 guys taking your ship, scuttling it, and bowing to them as they start freaking out l**o

  • @Mc-rossco I understand that. That is why I was somewhat hesitant to use the term "fair" as what is fair? This is less of a complaint and more of an observation. I personally see no reason to attack the smaller vessels in terms of challenge. It is like using a grenade to kill a fly. That said, they knew there was one player as they tried to snipe me a few times, that or they thought my invisible partner was completely useless.

@King-Jewz I wish there was a screenshot of that. I just pictured them turning around to see a guy in a tuxedo bowing with his top hat removed "Gentlemen."

  • Today, I was chased by a galleon on 2 separate occasions.

I was able to sink both of them and the last one, I ran out of cannon balls and I had to ram/board, kill the crew and stop them from repairing as they respawn.

As you learn the game, it becomes easier to survive. Know where the waters are deep enough for your sloop but not for the Galleons. Learn to predict their moves and you'll be greatly rewarded.

  • @lordblackwolf13 omg I didn't think about that damn XD

those smaller ships seem faster though that galleon couldn't catch me until I stopped at an island cause I was having fun. Not to mention they couldn't hit a single cannon shot from maybe 100 feet away lol

  • Just spent the past 2 hours completing quests to get chests along with being lucky enough to get a rare chest only to be jumped by a 4 man crew camping out at the outpost taking all my chests and stun-lock killing me. This is the most demoralizing feeling and makes me not want to play this if all its going to be is s*****g players ganging up on you at the outpost. I get it's pirates and what not but ill be damned if im going to sail for hours just to have everything ripped away in a second because its and overwhelmingly unfair fight. If it's going to be different tiers of ships at least make it where you face the same crew size.

  • @king-jewz The issue I ran into was the wind shifted and I had little time to adjust the sails so they caught up in no time. My fault? Well I am not going to blame virtual wind. lol

  • @lordblackwolf13 the thing to do there is to continue running in the way of the wind so u don't have to change ur sails till they give up

  • @bosssauce-gusto just my opinion, I drop a chest every time before going for another to be safe for that reason and if u see a ship at the outpost pull a 180 and find the next outpost

  • @king-jewz Ah, but that is where my mistake came in. They were cunning enough to trick me into thinking they gave up the chase. They turned hard to port so I turned hard to starboard. I left the helm to check the map to see how far off course they drove me, only to see them coming at me again. Next time, I keep sailing till I reach China. Can the devs add in China to the game?

  • @lordblackwolf13 I have a suspicion that on full release the map will be a little bigger but I haven't looked into it just my thought. But yea don't stop XD if u do find an island take ur most expensive chest and jump off and hide it underwater somewhere u can come back for it. Watched a streamer named Jericho do that earlier today

  • @king-jewz After you dig up your loot, hide it. That is the pirate way.

  • @king-jewz usually I would but since the quest were so close I decided to pick up both and return. They hid the ship on the other side of the outpost out of sight and scouted from the island. It was a very strategic move on their part but still 1v4 not the best odds. Regardless I'm not going solo anytime soon again.

  • @bosssauce-gusto
There are several outposts- 4 or 5 I think- so if you see a galleon parked at one, just sail to the next... Get a few islanfs between you & them & try a different port... You're not beholden to returning to the same place as you started. It's a big enough sea to spread out & avoid the hot outposts... :)

  • It’s just you, be more pirate!

  • I have yet to try this, but if you're being chased across the map practically, have them catch up just a little and then sail towards a fort. Your Sloop is tiny enough to avoid most NPC cannon fire from hitting and I feel the Galleons are too slow to maneuver around while chasing you. This could cause them to back down to give you a chance to escape or if they're persistent just keep circling the island, repairing any holes you might get, and hope they run out of wood and sink.

  • Feels like I’m reading a bunch of s***y’s crying on the playground about how Johnny stole the monkey bars from you.

Get this “fair” garbage out of here.

There’s nothing “fair” about pirates. Period. I’ll say it again....

“Fair” does NOT belong in this game.

FYI, yes, I have had all my loot (5 chests) stolen from me just last night. But you what?

It was MY FAULT. Not his/hers for my negligence on strategy.

  • @paloosecannon Ahoy there, while we encourage discussion on the forums, we do have a Pirate Code which outlines that everyone's opinion is valid and should be treated with respect, despite the fact you might disagree with it vehemently.

I understand what your saying but what we have to remember is that this is a game.

It's open world and sandbox so I think it's a good idea to let it be as open and free as they have made it.

But... let's not get too hardcore about letting people do what they want under the banner of "its a pirate game" it's a game first and foremost. The point of which is to have fun right? So a open world needs players to be fun and having vets just pray on new players all day and then shout them down as being s*****s is a good way to kill a game before it has a chance.

Maybe the best way to go about this is have a starting area to new players can get their feet wet first and learn to fend for themselves, then once they leave it's into a world of dog eat dog.

    Just my opinion though

  • Hmmmmm...... something I have been battling with over the past few days, I actually want to play the game in all forms, single player or getting drunk with mates and trying to steer the ship whilst blind drunk on grog.... yarrrr.... but the single player game for me is just sometimes too impossible, having been through games with virtually no one around which makes the game easy to play then being faced with ships that seem to appear from no-where and if there is more than another single player, then there's pretty much no chance of survival, steer, no lower the sail, wait set the wind direction, hold on load the cannon, bah, ran out of canonballs.... get to the other side of the boat..... hang on, in between bailing out water and fixing the ship I couldn't even manage to get my pirate sniper rifle out........ sank again...... killed in the water....... spawn killed when I got back...... ships waiting for me to get back to the island I was trying to get to for my treasure hunt........ Time to go again.

No, I proper spat my dummy out..... tossed teddy and lots of other toys outta the pram yesterday, mega rage quit, vowed to cancel my pre-order all because the single player game isn't just for seasoned players, its for miracle workers. I've read plenty of people saying, "oh your just not good enough, obviously not a real pirate, that's just what i want from the game".... yeah well lets see how long those guys last on their own when they have been spawn killed and hunted to oblivion, we'll see some rage quitting then!

Anyway I don't think it's a matter of fairness, I think its a matter of balance, which hopefully will be addressed as the game develops.

  • @lordblackwolf13

My issue was when playing solo, 4 people boarded my ship when I was underneath bailing water. They killed me and I could't get them off my ship, every time I spawned they killed me. The issue was when I killed any of them, they would span back on my ship. They need to change the spawn point for the intruders to be on their ship so we have a fighting chance of getting our ship back, and to stop the grief-ing.

  • @bosssauce-gusto another option is circle the port before making landfall. Takes some time but ur sure

  • For a game about plundering and being a "scalawag", there sure are a lot of whiners. Honestly, this game is about besting the other players... How do people do that in games with no means to be better than other players through purchases or item acquiring? They group up and attack the weaklings. You're the lone zebra to a pack of lions. My suggestion? Find a group.

There's been several occasions where as a galleon with a 4 man crew, a solo player on a sloop has charged us, or fired at us unprovoked to try their luck. Sometimes they do well for themselves, but it's rare that they get more than 2 of the crew down before they die and their ship with them.

  • While large ships attacking smaller ships may not be "fair", it's what could happen in reality. If they have ANY reason to suspect you may be carrying loot (and since that's the only real thing to do in this beta they ALWAYS have reason), they will attack.

The only way I could think of to "balance" this kind of thing is that when you join a map as a single player, the only other players on the map will ALSO be people who joined as single players. But that would still allow for griefing as someone could just stay on your ship without sinking it, killing you every time you spawn.

On the other hand, I actually had a lot of fun evading a 4 man crew while solo today. They rolled up on me and got 1-2 hits in before I could move. I was able to make course for open water (quickly patching and bailing as fast as possible) and got away by dipping between rocks that their larger ship had to go around.

So I guess "fun" can be found in many ways.

  • @lordblackwolf13 That happened to me during the Alpha. It totally took me out of the game and was extremely frustrating. I say stay on the look out for large ships. See them in the distance and get out of there.
When I have a four man crew I always tell them a single mast we leave alone, but if they insist we sink them once....pirates are pirates after all.

  • @treblucfayle Good story! If you can catch the wind you will out race them fast!

  • After having logged more time, I have the following to add to my original post. It is certainly possible to still play the game solo as a challenge. I never said it was impossible or not a challenge. However, I basically deployed several tricks in order to start building a modest fortune. Yet these tricks will often make it seem less fun and more work.

Soloing in this game basically turns the game into a survival game rather than a role playing one. It changes from what can I do to how long can I go without being sunk. Today I hopped on for a while and saw no other ships. However this ended up making it feel like my paranoia was irrational. I know that it most certainly is rational given some of my other time.

Basically, my thoughts for now stand as is. If you do not run into any other players, you are lucky but also in for a potentially lack luster experience. If you do run into other sloops, you are going to be playing the game on a more even field (when I first played, I had some fun 1 vs 1 battles). If you keep coming across galleons, you are in for a rough time but may enjoy it. I said it in the OP but will say it again. It is not that I minded my experience thus far, it is that I know that this will be a huge turn off for a lot of players who were looking at this as strictly an adventure RPG.

Moral of the story: playing with friends = fun RPG. Playing solo = survival challenge that you may enjoy at first will get tired of once you have learned the tricks. Just my thoughts.

  • @LordBlackwolf13

You can sink any ship solo

    https://youtu.be/ea_RJISTSP0

  • It's a different experience with its own risks and rewards, still fun if you work to your advantages. While the galleon can catch you in open water, you can outmaneuver it easily since the galleon can't turn as quickly and any sharp maneuvers with a galleon require a lot of crew work to manage the anchor and sails.

You can run circles around the galleon and put a lot of holes in it while they wrestle with their ship's position. I've also found most crews will grow weary of trying to keep up with you and eventually go in a different direction.

  • Honestly mate, the game is called “Sea Of Thieves”. It’s a pirates life... expect to always be outnumbered, and outgunned ;)

  • a LOT of posts on this thread so I'm not going to quote or read every last one, but my thoughts on the matter..

Pirates aren't known for being fair, that being said...

Smaller ships have a MUCH easier time turning and can easily out-maneuver the larger crews. They are SLOWER in straight lines, but you can honestly just keep yourself out of their cannon lines using rocks, islands, and their own slow turning against them.

The devs have been on record saying that their hope with the two man or solo ship, is that it'll let people get comfortable enough to eventually work their way into a large ship, so it makes sense that their would be a natural push towards them being slightly better.

Being hunted down repeatedly by one ship DOES suck, but you can always leave the game, and join a new instance.

Hide your loot, sell it instantly, or just get better at working the small ship. It's tough, but you can absolutely sink Galleons with it once you're practiced enough. I hope the devs do absolutely nothing to keep the smaller ships safe from large ones, as it would take the fun and risk out of being a solo player.

  • I'm sure it's been said in the comments but...
It's a pirate game! It's all part of the experience. It's difficult to play solo, as it should be.
As a solo player you have to be aware of everything around you (storms, skeleton strongholds, and other ships nearby).

It's best to strategically avoid contact with larger crews. The smaller ship is much more agile than the larger and offensive powered ship and can outrun it.

  • What's really not fair is the fact that I've eaten like 200 bananas and "poo like Mount St Helens" is not in the keybindings anywhere!

  • My advice is not to go solo or as a duo. Not everyone in this game is as sporting as I am. Three days in and our four man crew hasn't shot anyone first. When we spot other ships we do keep an eye on them and ready for combat in case it comes to that. But we've never targeted another ship.

Make friends and sail as a four man because there will always be a group out there that just fires first on any vessel for either fun or to take your stuff. It's like the tools who play DayZ and camp out spawns with six or seven guys. They do it because they can.
