So uh $70 bucks for a game with no content besides roleplaying?

  • There just isn't enough content in this game to keep you occupied, even if the price wasn't an issue, what is there to do besides roleplaying?

I play Black Desert Online, less than $10 bucks on steam and you have thousands and thousands of hours of content to do, everything unique and different, quests, new gear, bosses, customisation, player housing, work stalls, professions, even better ship customisation than SOT a whole game based around your ship! oh and yeah you can roleplay in the game just the same as this one. the list goes on and on.

Then we get to Sea of Thieves, what has SOT got? a handful of different items that really don't do anything, a green bucket, cool? loot some chests that get extremely repetitive, there is literally no challenge in finding treasure. PvP is almost a waste of time because anyone that wants to fight you doesn't have anything to begin with and you get no reward for killing players or sinking another ship. Sure I had some great funny moments with my friends for the first 4 hours but after that all 4 of us proposed the question, what do we do next? more chests for gold that we don't need unless you want a slightly different hat than someone else and more pointless PvP. Anyone with treasure will just run away and with ships being the same speed and no way to upgrade them if they don't want to fight you, you wont catch them. Why is there no grape-shot, grappling hooks, etc etc etc

I really hope they are holding out on a lot of content for the release of the game, because as it stands if all there is to do is get chests and pointless PvP I see it getting very repetitive and boring quickly. I mean 4 hours of gameplay and all 3 of my friends had the same thought, we are bored and want something else to do. Even watching streamers like summit1g, cdnthe3rd, lirik, thegiantwaffle all had the same opinion, where is all the content? ATM its just a glorified blackwake with worse PvP and some loot chests... Hundreds of thousands of people are checking out this game on twitch, youtube and other media sites, if they are holding out that much of the game I feel like its just going to hurt their sales, So in my mind this is all were going to get.. If they had all this amazing content hidden for release it's not very smart that they did that.

My argument would be why are they holding out so much content for a beta (If there is actually any good content to come), what to keep it interesting for launch but why? It's only a 5 day beta, they should be showing us all the cool stuff to build the hype, so we tell our friends "hey dude check out this awesome game with all these features" but no they are killing the hype for this game by leaving out all the good stuff.. people will base their purchase of what they see now. If you take anything from other game launch experiences and betas once people get a bad taste in their mouth they don't come back.

I had so much hype for this game and was super excited to be apart of the Beta, the base mechanics have so much potential to be more than it is, why waste all that potential with just being a super basic roleplaying game with no real objective or goals to accomplish.

  • @coracbra I 100% agree with you. The good news is that your concern is shared by thousands if not millions of fans watching this game. We are hoping Rare responds with some good news at some point. Right now though, its pretty depressing to see it going down this way. For 2 years I've heard people in and out of this community say to Rare "Yes we know, but what do you do?" and for years we were reassured that there would be rich and meaningful ship customization, in-depth stories and quests, important and powerful rewards, and epic battles with sea monsters. All of these things MIGHT still be coming, but we don't know for sure:

Can you tell us more about the in-game progression? I’d imagine you start with a small ship and work from there.
"You can imagine yourself as a penniless pirate dressed in rags and you want to become a pirate legend in fine clothing and awesome weaponry and cool equipment with the best ship. We have a progression system."

    Including ship customisation?
    "Yes."

With missions and objectives to earn in-game currency to buy all of it?
"Yeah. You get treasure and you want the loot, you’ll want to spend it. Personal progressions are around you and also on weapons and objects that you can carry. Everyone wants to own a ship or ships and make it look like they want it to look cool. These customizations aren’t just aesthetics but functional too. So a larger sail that looks cool will also makes your ship move quicker too."

Is anything they've said before real, or was all of this talk just bs to try and generate hype?

  • The game example was pretty weak. Black Desert Online is basically a mobile game that you play afk. And it's the same price as CoD, which I would say has less content than Sea of Thieves

  • Just one thing... This... is... a BETA... Come on, no beta gave us all the content of a game... Just look at Ghost Recon Wildlands Beta, there was not more content than Sea of Thieves beta, so why do you think there's not enough content ? Did you already play the final game ?

  • We were told before beta launched that it would be limited, maybe the extent of these limitations were a bit higher then people had hoped, but complaining doesn't achieve anything, Instead i would recommend constructive criticism. If you want to see this game succeed support the developers. As far as pre-orders go, you don't get any real advantage in the beta, just hold off buying it until the game fully releases and judge it then.

Man, referencing a failed game as an example isn't really what you should be going for. Plus you're talking about two different genres. If you had compared World of Warcraft, Destiny, Everquest, Rift, or any other MMO (or open-world multiplayer adventure game) your argument could have had some value. Unfortunately for you, all of those games had a pretty filled out Closed Beta's, with most of the core features being present and functioning. You could earn new equipment, customize you character or your house, build up your arsenal or expand your characters knowledge by unlocking their abilities, you could take on major bosses and do huge raids, there were even world events and scaled PVP.

But you can't compare those closed beta's to SoT, because your argument wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

  • I have said it before but its still valid I think... I paid full price for CoD: MW years ago, finished it in a couple of hours, was bored and took it back for a full refund....last CoD game I have ever (and likely will ever) pay money for.

As it is now I have played SoT for nearly 150 hours and not been bored once.

  • @triheadedmonkey I played CoD too once, hated it. I played SoT for over 100 hours, and got bored. I fail to see what your point is here mate? Plus you are comparing a First Person Shooter to a MMO, come on now.

  • I'd like a bit more customization. Being able to swap out a side cannon on the ship for one on the front or back would be great. Personalizing your flag or sails with a unique to your ship emblem. The option of having a 6 person frigate, slower speed in exchange for a larger crew size. A faction that gives quests exclusive to hunting down merchant ships and looting them. Another faction that ties into a bounty system, where ships with high player kills/sunk ship counts are targeted by bounty hunters who will then get gold based on the infamy of the crew they are going up against.

  • @ethnine my point was, CoD was a full release, complete game and had 3 hours of relatively boring content.... SoT is still in testing and has kept me entertained for 50 times as long.

    I'm comparing a game to a game.

  • An awful lot of content has been locked behind the payment of a game. Closed is never the full game package. It’s like a demo... they have to hold a lot of content back to keep it interesting.

  • @ALMIGHTY-JE5U5 Sure its a beta, but its only 5 days so I don't think adding fun content now will make it boring on release, its only 5 days, if you lose interest in 5 days with the full content in the beta its still not enough content to justify $70 but like I said in the OP, it doesn't make sense to hold out that amount of content when the game is literally around the corner. People are watching and trying the game now to see whether they will buy it or not. It's only hurting the games sales and player base, so I feel like this is pretty much all the game has to offer, I don't know for certain I'm not on the dev team but if its true and they have all this amazing content hidden from us it was a very poor decision to do that when the game is so close to launch.

But I want this game to be successful so if they are holding out all that stuff awesome, I want a good pirate game and have wanted one for the longest time.

And for you guys who are mentioning COD, I don't like it either, but it has a lot of content in terms of weapon upgrades, weapon unlocks, prestige, that in my mind would keep me more occupied than doing the same treasure hunting over and over with no real reward from the gold you acquire and OFC it's a totally different genre of game so I don't think you can compare the two.

Open world games are mean't to be full of choice, but there is no choice is Sea of Thieves, If you want a better comparsion, World's adrift is similar to SOT in a sense, now that game has way more stuff to do and is a lot cheaper. You can upgrade ever part of your flying ship, different cannons, engine speeds, hull strength all affecting different stats like speed, weight, tankiness etc etc SOT has none of that.

  • Complainers seem to be using the word content, and then defenders are saying content is coming.

The issue is core game mechanics that make a game, and this game is lacking in those. Thats why people are bored, yes we have all played beta's with content locked out, but usually the end result is people wanting more not complaining there wasnt enough. See the difference?

This isnt even a role playing game, its more a role playing simulator, the actual "game" "achievment" is all cosmetic.
Sinking ships is fun and all but the skill cap is hardly going to be high for repeat gameplay, its way down compared to a racing, shooter game etc.

Every sandbox game i can think of has some sort of progression to motivate a player.
And fancy hats isn't it, people playing now are not interested in treasure hunting because fancy hats. and they label it as lack of content. but its lack of "game"

If you want a pirate themed dungeons and dragons sandbox, you're going to love this.

I love sailing around in this game, but im already bored because i have no interest in the store clothes. And no matter how many clothes they throw in, and how clever they make the way of getting them, im just not going to be interested in the long run.

Its all stick and no carrot

  • and you can't compare to cod because cod is a competitive pvp experince, without any content, lvling, unlocking weapons. its still a game. Like chess, you play to achieve victory over you're opponent.

So it boils down to (in sot) sinking a ship, and looking for your next opponent. There is no sense of victory in the long run. Its not deep enough to be a competitive ship sinking game type.

Again, its just a sandbox roleplay game. which must appeal to a crowd. Just not the people who are disappointed.

  • lol says the guy with a profile pic of a football helmet. You don't realize how much is missing from this beta lol. there is so much more content that will be in the next beta/full game. you must not have seen rare's videos... this beta is only a small taste!

The football helmet is a random default image when I made my xbox account, like that has anything to do with this? I couldn't care less what my profile image is.

Secondly, whats the point of leaving a bad taste in peoples mouth, when they could of built mass hype for this game by making it fun and exciting to play in the beta?
Imagine if they had all the fun content that your talking about in the beta and instead of thousands of people complaining of lack of content, over the 5 days thousands of people telling their friends "hey this game is amazing look at all these awesome features, we should pre-order it." If all they wanted was a sever stability test they should of left the NDA on because the people watching now are seeing a game with no content, in fact it would be better for testing if they had fun stuff to do because more people would stay logged in and playing instead of logging out after a few hours because of boredom.

  • @ethnine Sea of Thieves is not an MMO.

  • @slain-valhallan Open-World Multiplayer Adventure Game.....good lord....

  • @slain-valhallan said in So uh $70 bucks for a game with no content besides roleplaying?:

@ethnine Sea of Thieves is not an MMO.

I'm not sure what it is at this point, a role playing simulator were you stand around and get drunk and play instruments? Once you get all the clothes unlocked that's all that's left.

    But it is massively multiplayer.

  • @coracbra this is why I didn't know how to feel about a closed beta because of mutineers that don't understand how early access works -_-

  • @ethnine Mark my words!! NO MAN’S SKY 2.0!!!

  • @stephenfarren How though??
No Man's Sky was criticized heavily due to content promised not being in the final game.

Sea of Thieves pretty much has everything in the game already from the trailers (aside from a couple of mission factions and the Kraken).

Not really an apples to apples comparison there.

  • there is only since the beginning of the beta, where people have come criticize the game on the forum, before no.
On twitch, having traveled a lot of channels, 95% of the players and the tchat, have a very favorable opinion on the game, the number of pre-order at the moment it's an excemple.
You remain a minority who does not inquire about the game, who do not see further than the beta and who have trouble to catch up a boat (a lack of coordination and experience, it is normal at the beginning)

  • @slain-valhallan Go back and look at that Gregg Mayles interview. He promised some interesting stuff such as there being loss/cost to losing your ship (sounds similar to a buy-back system in Elite: Dangerous), and functional/advantageous equipment and upgrades. He also said you can straight up steal other peoples' ships.

Rare has not publically invalidated these points, but have only obfuscated them by offering contradictory attitudes "a cutlass is just a cutlass." So this is either a straight-up No Man's Sky kind of misdirect where we are not actually getting this awesome stuff that Mayles talked about, or it's still coming and is kept heavily under wraps for some reason.

  • @slain-valhallan Let me describe the latest trailer. Not all the other ones because it will take too long. Last trailer had snakes, fish, skeleton bosses, skeleton clouds, chickens, pigs, character customization(stuck with one fat guy), and 3 trading companies. That was a trailer!! The Beta has 1 trading company that barely works with no PVP rewards or consequences. The post that I replied to stated that you can get sails that make your ship faster. That is a lie because Rare stated lately that rewards will only be cosmetic and will give you no advantage. So ya, very similar to the story of NO MAN’S SKY 2.0!

  • @natsu-v2 and that isn't the only interview where they said similar things. 2015-2016 they gave lots of interviews talking about these things that were coming to their game. 2017 the went silent on the subject of content. So I honestly don't know what to think anymore. But the feeling is that of the same feeling I had with No Mans Sky.

  • @ethnine I am getting the feeling that 95% of Rare has been working on the graphics and stability while 4% has been working on game content. The other 1% had the idea to release a beta that had less content than the Alpha.

  • @sidious8888 said in So uh $70 bucks for a game with no content besides roleplaying?:

Well its not actually possible for 2 ships of the exact same max speed to catch up to one another. If your 200 meters behind a ship and their max speed is 5 knots the same as yours, you will never get any closer to them no matter how skilled you are.. So what your saying about lack of coordination and experience is invalid. The only way would be if the ship your chasing is inexperienced. but honestly the game is easy. its not hard to turn your sails the right direction for the wind...

  • @coracbra it's sure that if it's a pursuit in a straight line, it's useless to continue. But unlike that, it will be the most coordinated and anticipating team that will have the advantage.

  • @stephenfarren I'm fairly certain all of that's coming for launch. That was a very recent trailer.
I'm talking about some of the earliest trailers, which is what NMS had an issue with.

That stuff...the snakes, pigs, other factions, etc. will 100% be in the final game. It's just not in the beta.
I mean...just because something isn't in a beta means that it won't be in the final game??

I'm not defending Rare on anything here, just stating the obvious.
And if you look at my post history, I've been a fairly critical/skeptic person when it comes to SoT content.

  • @sidious8888 I would hope that in a chase, it would come down to sailing skills, sail settings and effectively tacking, for max performance to outrun your opponent.

  • @ethnine @Schnibz @ALMIGHTY-JE5U5 @Grievous32
@MYxSW33TxSHAD0W @Slain-Valhallan @StephenFarren @Sidious8888 last time the community of a game asked "what do you do in your game?" it was No Man's Lies with shaun murrey.

there's an old saying in marketing and business "if you have to explain what your product is, it's already failed"

Poor marketing has killed many games before as well, who ever thought it'd be a good idea to showcase the game as barebones as it is now to the average consumer is insane. yes, many people in the comments say "Its just a beta for bug testing and server side issues". if this was true, the NDA would still be active and it would not have been a pre-order incentive. This was as much an advertisement and marketing strategy, in actual effect, a Demo, as it was a beta. this was the height of folly and naivety to assume that it was anything other than that.

further more, the devs of this game are a contradiction, "show dont tell"... well we haven't seen anything new or engaging yet, and have been told "don't worry more content is on the way"

thats seems the opposite of show dont tell, especially because we've had the promise of more content for years now.

this whole thing smells funny, and seems very familier as we've actually lived through devs lieing to our faces before, dont be shocked if much of the content promised doesnt come through until months or yeasrs after launch

  • @ht-dave but that's the case, I just talked about it.

  • @djm-xr07 yeah then the "fanboys" as you say, they have seen the progression of the game for months, especially since December, so we get to immaginated the progress that will be in 2 months and the year after the release of the game.

  • @sidious8888 was I the only one that thought the content released in December was lacking as well? I mean, it seems like the same stuff as the Gold Horders with a slightly different skin and different items. Sorry, for anyone that actually liked the December progression revel, I just thought it was rather lacking on its own merit. And the beta, its not a beta its a side-show at this point lol.
