Third Person View

  • Will there be an option for third person view in the full game buying stuff to wear for my character but never seeing it seems pointless can this be an option added to the game?

  • @delpoi The developers did say that for key moments in the game - like using the emotes and possibly using the store that third person will be used.

But I don't think third person will be there as a play style.

  • hope they do it for gameplay too, it keeps a lot of people farming cosmetics like the division, tema fortress, even wow transmogs. And its awesome to watch all those good animations. People that want 1st, play in 1st. Simple

I know I'll be concentrating on my pirate look I definitely want to be able to see him :)

I'd like it for the social aspects like in the tavern mixing with your crew I don't mind first person for gameplay but would like to see my pirate though as I customise them :)

  • @delpoi if there will be a 3d person mode, it should be on different servers from 1st person like in PUBG :)
It's tactical advantage with more field of view.

  • I hope they wont. You can use emotes if you want to see your outfit. Dont want to see this game turn into one of those third person cheese games.

  • 3rd person does change the nature of the game, so its a long shot to ask for that. An option to pitch the camera around yourself when using emotes should be more than enough. If i had to choose one it would definately e 1st person, and if they split it, they split the player base.

  • Please, NO 3rd person :(

  • @delpoi use emote to see your pirate.

  • I hope not.

  • I don't remember where, but i read that we may have a mirror in the capitan cabin to check how you look like 😜

  • I hope not.

  • I hope there is 3rd person for moments meaning if I go afk I want the camera to pan around the ship to see all my shipmates including myself, or if im steering the ship i'd like to see myself.

I find it odd not to see myself in a pirate game based on looting, don't you want to look at your goods?

  • God i hope not. 3rd person camera pov is horrible in any slightly competitive game with corner/cover peeking and the advantages and situations that occur when you can see around/over map geometry without exposing yourself. Ruins the gameplay and also immersion.

  • I think it's a really odd choice to focus on cosmetics as progression but not allow someone to see oneself regularly. In AC: Black Flag, you had awesome outfits and just seeing yourself in say Captain Morgan's feathered cap and longcoat at the helm was amazing.

Overwatch does the same thing as Sea of Thieves, and I find skins pointless as a result. It's great everyone else can see it, but I picked it because I like it and I want to see it.

  • @thecanisdirus I don't see how third person ruins it when everyone would have the same advantage. If anything first person mode would require more skill and give people a challenge to figure out.

  • Isn't this the same thing as IRL? I dress how i choose to so other people can look at me... It's "knowing" how you look that should be influencing your choices. We dont need to constantly stare at ourselves to know how we look do we?

Also - wasn't there some information about a mirror being present in the captain's quarters on ships?

  • @gholin 3rd person kills competitive play. Here's a simple video that does a great job explaining why and how

    3rd person vs 1st person in-game

  • @thecanisdirus you don't have to necessarily use 3rd person for competitive play, they could simply just add it in if you're afk or standing still for a few seconds, just to check yourself out sort of thing.

  • @thecanisdirus Sweet. Thanks! I'll check it out.

And yes @TheCanisDirus, real life is like that, but this isn't real life. I want to see my pirate doing cool things in fashionable clothes. Otherwise, why bother with fashionable clothes? Just wear skivvies if it's not a big deal to see yourself. You can imagine yourself however in that regards.

Even if there was a camera button I could toggle to just see myself whenever, I'd be happy.

The emotes work pretty well for this currently and can be triggered whenever you want :)

No prob! Very cool little video. As far as the 3rd person button... emotes work for that currently.

  • third person is a no in my books. but i do like how it would change to third person for cinematics, emotes, etc. but not permanently or a toggle system.
@TheCanisDirus posted a good video. i like it.

  • I never meant for third person view gameplay I meant like in the social setting in the tavern or if they have a social hub for your clan etc...
I like the first person view for gameplay but would like to see my pirate considering am picking and choosing how he looks...

  • I think they should certainly do what PUBG did. Just allow you to switch on game with the click of a button.

Whilst getting to grips with the game, at first I wanted to put time into my gold and changing out my skin. Then I realised there's absolutely no incentive to do this as I can't see myself.

And no, I don't want to hit an emote button to get a glimpse. I'll just sit here and dance to make it feel worth while spending 6k+ gold on an admiral skin?

Just feels like there's no incentive there to alter skins.

Hell, I just want to stand at the front of the ship and see my character against the beautiful backdrop.

Is the little things like that for me.

Just put a button that can toggle.

Many people have different feelings on this. This is just my opinion.

You could always do what pubg did and allow matchmaking based on people that'd like it locked to FPP, or people that want both. Not like there'll be a shortage of people to play with.

That way everyone can be happy.

  • NO third person view! It would make skanning a horizon and avoiding sharks easier and allow hiding, looking from cover and other ridiculously stupid actions I hate in this view.

You can use actions like sitting, bowing, waving etc, and then you see your character in third person view. That's enough.

  • I am a huge fan of 3rd person, my fave games so far are division, gears of war, tomb raider, horizon zero dawn, assassins creed, and of course the master piece that is wildands BUT i am not sure it would work on this game. Just the way everything is a physical object maps compass etc. How can you read your compass in 3rd person? The entire point is everything is immersive no stupid huds.

  • @delpoi I hope that they won't add third person into the game, because third person could kill fun of this game.

  • @sir-mazh 1 person again 3rd person isn't fair play for pvp.. so every body will have to be 3rd person to be competitive...
plus if we hope have a VR Versions it will not work... if its possible in furtur for example...

  • I really think they should add third person in the game because like what if an enemy comes and we were just doing our duty well they would kill us while we r in first person but in third person we could actually see who’s behind our back and then we could then get them and we could see what we added onto our character so I really think they should add third person into the game as an option because I normally don’t play games that are in first person but I play third person games so they should add third person

  • I hate first person they should do gameplay in third person and first person like Minecraft

  • @inbred-chimera why doesn’t it be third person first person sucks you can’t see whom is behind u but in third person u can

  • This has been discussed. It would make t unfair for other players

  • Since I myself suffer from motion sickness, allow me to put in my two cents.

I will not be one of those third-person-view supporters that refuse to accept the fact that that particular camera mode doesn't have its advantages. It is true that most third person games make it unrealistically possible to see around corners and over or around barriers. And yes, it also allows you to see behind your back.

BUT, both view modes have their advantages and disadvantages. First-person modes have the added advantage of being able to see more detail on objects, whether they be close or far. (It'd be a lot harder to spot a ship on the horizon in third-person mode.) And it is also generally easier and quicker to aim in first-person mode.

As for immersion, while I understand first-person mode players' feelings on this, here's why people like me find third-person more immersive:

    • It simulates a better sense of awareness of your own person than first-person view, even if not in a way that real life works. Examples:
o Walking on narrow paths and being able to tell if you're balanced properly.
o Generally being able to tell what each of your body parts is doing, or even just where it is.
o Being able to tell if someone is behind you. (Seriously, while we don't have a sixth sense in real life, we can generally tell if someone is standing right behind us. Third-person view gives a better simulation of this, despite still being unrealistic.)

    • Third-person view generally gives you a wider FoV without distorting it beyond usability (FoV sliders in first-person view are rarely helpful beyond 100 degrees). This also simulates realistic "peripheral vision" because even if more of the world is within your view, you only see as much as what you're focusing on. The rest is still in your peripheral vision. This is often the biggest cause of motion-sickness for gamers in first-person view, as this view requires a ridiculous amount of camera-turning to be able to focus on anything.

Now, as for the gameplay balance of the two, like I mentioned before, both have their advantages, so there's really no reason to alienate a player-base for the sake of "equality". If Sea of Thieves was a stealth game, I'd understand points like "you shouldn't be able to see behind you without looking". If Sea of Thieves was a cover-based shooter, I'd understand points like "you shouldn't be able to look around the corner without exposing yourself". Sea of Thieves is neither of those types of games. It is an exploration game based on an immersive atmosphere. But, as I attempted to prove above, immersion is subjective.
So, eliminating the ability for one player-base to feel immersed when you can simply have the option to choose a camera mode seems unfair.

I realize that it is likely too late to do anything about it now, but I have yet to see a game fail either critically or financially because it offered too many camera modes. (Though I could very well just be ignorant to such cases.)

  • @delpoi if it is I’ll quit playing, 3rd person is vein and ‘easy mode’🤔
