HDR Too Dark (More Options Please)

  • Same here, too dark on my LG OLED.

  • @hauz20 HDR is on the Xbox One X by default.
It's not in the game, however other games don't have a problem with it. Sea of Thieves does. If you leave HDR switched on ( default for those with an Xbox One X and 4k with HDR compatible TV) then night time is way too dark. You cannot see anything. If the lights are off on the boat you can hardly even see where you are walking..

  • @majorwhiplash I agree. I said as much several times in this very thread. I jacked up my backlight and it seems better - not great by any means - but better. I don't want to jump in and out of settings to disable HDR, so I'm just living with it for now.

I understand there's an update coming to address X1X issues ... think this is part of that?

  • @hauz20 I sure hope so... Please devs... just a brightness slider that all other HDR games have... please.

  • @varxx said in HDR Too Dark (More Options Please):

Wish they enabled HDR on PC.............

Same. There is no reason why HDR cant be on PC. Plus the graphics settings in general are very sad.

  • I have a OLED B7a 55" and also find this game PITCH BLACK at night. Those saying that's how it should be at night have clearly never been outside when the moon is out... full moon you could drive without headlights.

  • Same with me, way too dark. With my LG OLED HDR and Xbox One X, the night time is impossible to navigate. During the day I NEVER see blue sky or ocean anymore. It's ALWAYS overcast/smoggy looking. It's completely different from the scale/beta tests. None of my other HDR games have this problem.

Furthermore, I have an additional Xbox One X and a 4K non-HDR TV setup also. Zero issues with that setup. I can sail in the same exact world at the same time and the darkness level is extremely different between the two. On the non-HDR setup I can see blue skies and oceans and during the night it is very easy to navigate. Not so on the HDR setup.

  • @skorpio11x Same

  • Is there HDR /upscaling 4k on XBox One S ??? How you turn HDR on?

  • I'm having these same problems. From what I'm gathering it's the Xbox and not my TV. Is there any way to fix this through the Xbox?

  • @hauz20 I know this is an old post but have you heard anything to fix this issue? It's horrible and borderline unplayable at night in hdr. Thanks

I just jacked up the OLED backlight in my TV's settings. I figure I'll just compensate in other games' settings via the HDR sliders they actually have in the in-game settings like SoT should have ...

  • Anyone having issues with hdr being too dark I would guess that 90% of you are using LG OLED. It's a known issue and has been an issue for months ever since LG released an update making hdr darker. As I say it's a well known issue. LG got so many complaints they even added it to their support page. As far as I am aware they still haven't fixed the issue and it doesn't look like they will.

  • @striker-x1 I do have an LG OLED, thanks for this support link. I'll give it a further look later today. For now, I disabled HDR mode on the Xbox and everything is better.

Yeah, LG said to just enable dynamic contrast, and it doesn't seem like they plan on changing anything. And it does help, but I've had that setting in place for konths. SoT is still far and above the darkest game I've played with enabled HDR.

  • This article talks about software version 5.30.01 and I'm on 4.30.something, but I still notice the darkness. It's pretty confusing now.

The beta and scale test were perfect without any darkness issues. Once the full release was available, that's when I had problems with everything being so dark. So I'm not sure if this is a problem with the TV or the game or both.

I did go in and set dynamic contrast to high, and it did make a small difference, but it's still a problem. So I went back again and disabled the HDR option in the Xbox settings, which makes the game look fantastic again.

This is pretty sad since I spent nearly $3,000 on this TV a few months ago, specifically for HDR, and now I have to disable HDR settings.

  • you realise that in game screen capturing or video capturing doesn't do HDR captures right?

here is a video i took of me playing xbox one x with HDR

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcLilQJwmr8

    looks amazing works perfectly

the reason i did a phone recording is because ingame capturing doesn't capture hdr

  • @moogle-mogg When I view my screenshots on the Xbox I'm given a toggle to switch on/off the HDR version of the screenshot.

The game looks good on your video, I don't see the dark issues like on my TV, what TV do you have?

  • @skorpio11x

    Samsung ks8000 - full 4k 10bit, full hdr panel

  • @skorpio11x from what i can tell iin the screenshots posted, is that hdr isn't even working

i say that because that's exactly what my PC game does if i try to run it in HDR when HDR isn't even on the pc realse, everythings just goes dark

  • I was having the same problem, HDR was too dark at night, couldn’t see anything as it was so murky, I changed the HDR setting on my LG TV to ‘HDR Vivid’ instead of ‘HDR Game’ and that’s fixed the problem for me, no more murky nights and the colours look way better.

  • First thing I did when I started the game was look for the brightness setting to brighten the HDR mode. Naturally couldn't find it. I hope they provide a way to change this soon.

  • Chiming in here, definitely too dark. Looks like just another game to do this wrong (https://ventspace.wordpress.com/2017/10/20/games-look-bad-part-1-hdr-and-tone-mapping/)

  • Guys..
You're on a boat, on the open sea, it turns night...
    Yes that's dark!
    Get used to it...
You all got used to city lights.. =þ
Also, I prefer it to stay like this, not add the option to adjust any of it at all.
You'll only get people using the lowest setting so they can see in the dark like it's day and then they wreck all others..

Yes, we're used to playing games with correct HDR tone mapping. :)

  • Too be honest, I wish my game was darker then it is right now at night.
Could be just me, with my Xbox S, but I don't see how darkness when it's dark is terrible.
Also I couldn't find those pictures mentioned the whole time...
So just stating this as my own ingame experience.

  • I'm playing SoT in Xbox One X and Samsung TV MU7000 with HDR 1000. The problem I find with HDR is the game seems to have a green hue compared with SDR mode. Is anyone having the same issue?

  • LGOLED here too Xbox One X. I switch between my PC and the XBOX and it's too dark. Ignore all the chat on here whether it's an LG problem or not or that some people find it great and others don't. It's really simple, add the ability to adjust HDR Brightness. It's a no brainer.

  • @bulldognz Agreed. There's a reason why every HDR game has a slider, HDR TVs differ from 500 nit to way over 1000. You have to adjust the game to your TV.

  • I'm on an LGB7A and it looks horribly dim and dark on HDR. Other games look amazing. They really need to add a brightness slider, God of War looks dim too until I used the in game HDR sliders and BAM looks amazing now. Please add this feature!!!

  • HDR doesn't look dark at all for me on mine. Having HDR off looks very dark though.

  • I was playing on a Samsung KS8000 and the game looked amazing with HDR on. I just purchased a Sony X850E. Now I cannot play Sea of Thieves with HDR on. It was so dark, even during the day. Best way I could describe was it was looked like I was viewing the game through polarized sunglasses. Hope they find a fix soon!

  • @miserycrow I have had a similar issue with my Sony X850E

  • I 100% agree with this. The game is nearly unplayable in HDR when it is dark out in the game it's WAY TOO dark, there needs to be some adjustment sliders for real.

  • @voigtboy said in HDR Too Dark (More Options Please):

@lifewcoke Click the link for 4 screens taken from my XBOX ONE X. 2 are regular and 2 are HDR.. the darker ones are HDR!!

HDR blacks are blacker...working as intended? turn off HDR?
