So since there is no NPC ships - will RARE be Roleplaying Legendary pirates?

  • Not sure what the story is for this game or if there is any sort of "Blackbeard" , "captain hook" type of characters, am I safe to assume that Rare will be manning legendary captain ships and playing as those characters?

Like hypothetically rare would be assisting some sort of well known voice actor Roleplaying as a legendary pirate?

this would be random encounter situation that rare sets up just for a few days a month...but it would also be one of the most Unique things to be done since Ultima online, when richard garriot played Lord British and the other dev played Blackthorne, it was sort of like dynamic living breathing stories.

We could possibly see rare introducing the Navy and having really good voice actors on the crew

    I don;t know just a passing thought

  • being serious lol

I am curious if rare is going to have someone playing storied characters since there is no NPC ships on the sea besides us.

John you should check out the history of ultima online it was one of the best things they did with that game, it was a game ahead of its time in my opinion.

  • @chosen-predator Since the game has Open mic, this is an amazing idea. So if they were not planning to do yet, PLEASE TAKE ON THIS GUY'S IDEA. Love it.

  • @chosen-predator When you mention him with @Jonn-Havoc, he will get an notification ;P

  • Just started following this game (man, where have I been?!) and I loved the Developer gameplay videos, such a fun bunch of people you have working on this project. I also agree, that having the staff take on the role of notorious pirate crews could add some flavor and fun to the mix, especially with some of the personalities ya'll have working over there! :D

  • @kravyn84 Maybe on a huge boat. Really huge one.

  • @jcmdeadpool Maybe a massive Man 'O' War? ^_^

  • @kravyn84 Naw. I just thougth about a normal pirate boat, but like 3 times bigger then the galleon (Is this the right way to write it?).

  • How Richard Garriot did it he'd do it with no announcement he would just appear, he'd select a server to go on and he'd roleplay.

There was one famous case where a thief assassinated him though, the results were pretty funny i guess they didn't have "godmode' on to protect him so he got killed.

  • @chosen-predator Disney staff would do that on PotCo as well, they'd appear and roleplay as the Black Guard, looking for pirates to arrest and up to no good, it really was so much fun to see and be a part of :)

  • @katttruewalker Oh that is actually really cool I didn't know Disney did that with POTC, did they roleplay on voice or text? I was thinkingg SOT take it to the extra level and kind of innovate on the idea with voice actors, confined to their character's personality script, improv scenarios but the direction would always advance a story somehow. The encounters would be interesting maybe they would run into players, perhaps run into players who are even recording and those situations could go viral

it really depends on how rare wants to do it

  • Would be a good idea. If the legendary ship was NPC run it wouldn't adapt as well to a situation having it be RARE would just add to the excitement more in my opinion.

  • This idea is amazing! They wouldn't have to add anything except their own exclusive customizations into the game. Then they sail around causing a ruckus and having fun! They could be their own raid boss, but live players. RARE please consider this!

  • Well if we are suggesting actors and personas then I would like Captain Hector Barbossa by Geoffrey Rush

  • @cptncuttlefish Yup and it would be a standout feature never done before in this kind of detail a raid boss controlled by the devs with voice actors on board (coach by rare so they will be pretty much top tier) and you would have one of the most dynamic raids in history.

  • (Most of this a bit off topic, but i got carried away while writing it)

It's super cool idea. Those of you who played AdventureQuest Worlds probably remember how the devs in game characters were key people from the lore, which i thought was very cool. The sad thing is that(As far is a understand) there's different seas(servers) to limit the amount of ships on one sea. This would mean that you would have to be pretty lucky to land on the same server and actually encounter these "Legendary dev characters". Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, i'm just afraid i would never encounter them :)

Another thing along the same lines tho. In the progression video it's mentioned that the most infamous pirates "will play in important role in the golden pirate age to come"(Something like that). This could mean that Rare plans on letting some of the most infamous pirates(Maybe someone with huge amounts of faction proggression?) get a special status in the Sea of Thieves. The quote from the video allows for a lot of speculation though. It might not even be suggesting any in-game event. Though i do think that there's some potential when it comes to the "Legendary pirates" concept.

I think it would be amazing if we were to see some of the most hardcore SoT players act as bosses for certain events. Imagine for example an event where the gold hoarders would have to ship some of the massive amounts of treasure the pirates of SoT have gathered for them. This event could play out in the form of some super strong galleon(Sort of like a raid boss) filled with sparkling treasure, and manned by those players most trusted by the gold hoarders(Players who have done A LOT of gold hoarder voyages). And then other players trying to team up to sink this ship and take the treasure.

Similar things could be done with the rest of the factions. The merchants guild doing a huge transaction with some other merchants. And pirates trusted by the merchants guild would be bodyguards(With weapons stronger than the regular. Again, as sort of raid boss characters) to ensure the transaction goes smoothly, and doesn't get interrupted by greedy pirates trying to take the gold and trade goods for themselves.

And of course for the Order of Souls there could be some of their most trusted accomplices(Players, in case you didn't where i was going) doing a spooky ritual in a cave filled with a skeletons. Other players would then have to team up to plow their way through skeletons with enough bananas and ammo left to overcome the vicious pirate crew inside.

These are just few examples. Even the whole concept is just one of example of how pirates could feel "Legendary". I hope that something similar will be added to the game though, maybe in the far away future. The reason for this is that i imagine that even though the voyages and the game overall seems like a lot of fun. But i can't imagine that you can keep playing indefinitely without the voyages getting tedious at some point. If there's recurring events where players take the place of what could've been NPC's that gives people something to do at the VERY end game. To be honest i think most people even after clearing ever corner of SoT would come back a few times a month/week if it was because they got to be a raid boss :)

Let me know what you think about these ideas. And please share any ideas you have for a way to feel that you're getting that "Legendary pirate" status. I'm very interesting in discussing this :)

    Lots of love, Flade

  • @fladelade Yeah, you got carried away....

    I love it.

  • That glorious, mysterious or infamous
legendary captain could well be ye!
    #BeMorePirate
    ..and ye shall see

  • @fladelade Great Idea, it would be enhanced if we are fortunate enough that these hardcore players happen to be into Roleplaying and end up doing improv out of the situation, I know not everyone is into the RP stuff but some of those players are mind boggling great at what they do, lol.

I really like the idea of potentially BECOMING a raid boss or assisting one on the open seas, I imagine if i get clout with the order of souls I'll be able to sail with them, maybe it can be a dev players acting as those characters,

I guess it would sort of be like going onto a disney ride, you get to experience being a part of the world you love and the characters that are in it.

reading what you wrote spark tons of ideas in my head lol. I'll think for a bit to define a better response.

  • Rare this idea is amazing please consider it and just imagine how much fun it would be for you as well ☠

  • I hope we continue to see Rare employees on the seas, but I'd rather they weren't trying to be "Blackbeard" or "Captain Morgan" or anything. We are the (future) pirate legends of this world.

  • i hope in the beta yeh that would be cool

  • @erikinthebakery that is fine but you won't exactly get the dynamic feeling of an evolved story, players can only do so much to move forward, these characters rare would play would move the legend of the world forward. I for one hope RARE takes part of the world in a unique way, a living breathing story that can change dynamically because of us.

  • @Chosen-Predator
They have people with plans ;)

  • @erikinthebakery oh wow, Live campaigns would fit this idea literally perfectly, but I see that was a topic from 2017 May, wonder if we're a bit to late with this suggestion.

Seasonal events is the proto-type idea but I think this idea here is a standout feature that will separate them from everything else.

  • @chosen-predator said in So since there is no NPC ships - will RARE be Roleplaying Legendary pirates?:

am I safe to assume that Rare will be manning legendary captain ships and playing as those characters?

There hasn't been any sort of indication that they will, so I'd say you aren't safe to assume that. In fact, Rare has specifically left out legendary pirate NPCs so that players would feel like the legendary pirates. Having the devs be the legendary pirates instead just seems counter intuitive.

Honestly, I'd rather not be a background character in the devs story. What you described in Ultima online sounds like a bad case of DM PC.

  • @timeoftheyear you wouldn't be a background character at all, the pirate would exist just like the kraken exist in the world, one is defined and the other is dynamic but both have their confined reasons to be in the game. You can still be a legendary pirate yourself, you can do all the task, return the treasures, return skulls, and gain clout amongst your own crew and feel awesome but I don't think there is anything wrong with the DEVS or people the devs assign to play in those living events they suggested.

Just imagine how cool the experience would be it's not frequent and constant, it's something special you'd see and remember forever. If you want to be a legendary pirate I feel like it's going to be like WOW with everyone standing in a tavern wearing armor that glitters, thats no fun, there is 3420943098320893243 games like that already, this gives players a chance of telling stories to remember.

  • @chosen-predator The devs agree with me that the players should be the legends. Inn-side Story #1 at 1:32. I think that their opinion on AI run characters can be applied to dev run characters because neither are players.

Just imagine how cool the experience would be

I have imagined it, I just don't agree that it would be cool.

Being a pirate legend is literally the selling point of this game and the sole purpose of the progression system.

this gives players a chance of telling stories to remember.

You can have memorable moments without the devs playing story characters. You mentioned WoW and that game has tons of memorable stories. The cool thing about WoW is that the players are the focus of the memorable moments.

Don't get me wrong, running into the devs while playing would be awesome. However, I don't think it would be awesome if I ran into them and they were playing some legendary pirate that is only legendary because they wrote it into the lore.

The game is all about building your legend through actions. If a dev wants to claim that their character is more legendary than mine, they better be able to set a mission down on the table to prove it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the DEVS or people the devs assign to play in those living events they suggested.

Cool moments emerge when the players accomplish something, not when they watch something get accomplished. I'd rather have the players kill the Kraken than have the players help some NPC (meaning AI or dev run) kill the kraken.

I have a lot of bias from being a DM. In Sea of Thieves, the devs are the DM and the players are... well the players. D&D is at it's best when the players are in the spotlight and I believe the same goes for Sea of Thieves.

  • @Chosen-Predator It's a very cool idea, but given the number of server sessions that will be running at any one time, I imagine it'd be super rare to actually come across them. :/

    hehe super alt text

    /pun mode off

  • @cptnspackjarrow take my upvote and walk the plank :D

  • @chosen-predator Ohh it was text, we didn't have voice chat, it was a fairly old style mmorpg, still a great thing to do, you'd identify the devs by their special name tag and the huge crowd lol

  • @timeoftheyear True, true I can see some of your points, but I see the DEVs as players as well with the same weaknesses just as established story characters, whether they die by players or not depends on the event, they said something about doing those type of events and eventually those things with slowly wither off into the distance, so it wouldn't be like some godlike DM OPing everyone in existence, it would just be a neat moment that I don't think has ever been done before, the biggest negative to it, is not a lot of people would ever get to see it.

But who knows just tossing up the idea RARE might have something much more better in store :P

  • Its an awesome ideia :D
