Should the sloop be faster than the Galleon downwind as well as upwind?
Are there any other suggestions in terms of balance for both ships that you may have?
I'd love to hear the community's thoughts!
@djm-xr07 I suppose it depends on what you want from the game.
Do you want a more realistic approach to the sailing mechanics? If yes then a Galleon should go faster since it has three masts and sails, even if it is heavier it shouldn't remove the physics of movement. That would be my take on it although I'm not well versed in the tech side of sailing.
If you want a simpler version then a sloop should go faster. The Sloop has very few advantages compared to the Galleon. It has a better maneuverability but less firepower, manpower, hight (cannons can fire longer from higher vantages) and "healthpoints" (ie. takes less to sink a sloop).
In my mind it needs to be in the spirit of the game, and the game is pretty silly and low on realism overall. Firing and reloading a musket underwater is a good evidence of this. It seems to be intended to be a lighthearted and funny game, so although a higher degree of realism might be fun in some aspects, it really isnt needed to fulfill the games apparent goal. So my hopes are for non-realistic simplicity.
@agentsalvo well all dimensions are off in this game. It's not meant to be realistic as I pointed out above. I would assume that a frigate will be shorter in height and have only two masts. But it really doesnt matter with the names, when all is said and done.
One man would never be able to sail the Sloop as it is, if it was realistic. The sails, cannons and rudder would require a few more crewmembers.
@agentsalvo As far as I know a frigate is more or less a collective name for smaller warships, a Galleon on the other hand is a shiptype from which a lot of shipdesigns have emerged (like most of the big Man'o Wars).
Fun thing is that a lot of people say Galley, which is a ship with oars haha

Couldn't have said it better myself, I'd much rather have the sloops faster in all respects. as I've heard it's really no contest between the galleon and the sloop combat wise, There should be some consistent way to prevent solo players from getting absolutely destroyed if a galleon gets them in their sights.
@djm-xr07
Don't consider only the speed or the number of cannons.
The sloop is more manoeuvrable than a galleon. On the sloop you can maneuvers faster, because a galleon requires coordination of the crew.
With the sloop you can evading from a galleon... worry more about the other Sloops! :)

I agree with @yepthom...
A war Sloop (or little war ship) of the 18th century, according to its size, mounted from 4 to 18 cannons and had crews from 20 to 125 sailors.

@djm-xr07 my friend and i run a duo crew with a sloop. Galleons don't stand a chance against us. If we encounter a galleon we are insanely deadly as a team and usually win fights against a galleon. We just know how to use the wind, rocks and fast anchor to destroy them. Practice and team work makes perfect.
I actually think as of now the combat capability is pretty fair if two relatively equally experienced crews clash...at sea. That's the big caveat for me. If a galleon comes up on a parked sloop, it's pretty much over immediately lolol the poor sloop's maneuverability advantage is completely negated and those four cannons will EAT through the sloop's health. I wonder if additional parked health would be a silly idea? Just to give crews or solos a chance to take the battle to sea where the power vs speed balance stands true. Or maybe an extra cannon on the bow of the sloop for deterring enemies? Idk. Maybe it's just something to suck up and plan ahead for! Like a true Captain, yarrr
I remember being told sloops are faster against the wind. If this is the case I think that's perfect. Galleons are faster with the wind, and sloops against. That just mean a ship battle also becomes somewhat strategic with the winds. If you're in a sloop and need to escape sail against the wind and vise versa.
In my testing of the sloop and gallon. They both sail the same with the wind. But that's of course both crews are very effective with sails. Against the wind the sloop is slightly faster. Which makes sense as it is a smaller mass against the force of the wind. I find them very balance if you have good experience also a good crew.
They are fairly balanced, it's just the sloop has more of a learning curve.
A good sloop crew (solo or duo) can give any galleon a run for its money. I don't think a sloop should be faster in both directions as it would make it even better than a galleon.
As it stands, it is slower with the wind and faster against it. The other aspects balance it out as well such as more maneuverability and better shooting angles. While the galleon has more crew and cannons etc, all these trade offs and differences balance out well.
The key is to learn how to sail a sloop. As stated before, it has a steeper learning curve. Learn by playing with others first. Then take on the sloop.
@djm-xr07 I think something should be done with 4 man vs 2 man in general. Increase the respawn time of ppl on galleon or something like that because people on galleon just respawn too fast and it's extremely hard to sink the ship. A balance in that region is well needed

I really don't understand why it's called a gallon in the first place. It looks more like a frigate to me. A galleon was almost as big as a Man-O-War. Please correct me if I'm wrong as long as you explain why.
I think it is more like a Cromster, which were essentially mini galleons used for escort
When it comes to Galleons or Sloops its pretty balanced. This game overall is pretty balanced actually. Not so much after the introduction of cursed cannon balls but still balanced.
The sloop needs a direction on where it can move faster than the galleon or the galleon will always over take the Sloop. The sloop has the maneuverability and if done right can either stay in the Galleons blind spot or run away/dog fight.
Its all about what you know and how you do accomplish your objectives. I have friends messaging me to take over their sloop when they are being chased by a galleon because they know I can out run them and if needed sink it.
Its about gauging the wind, the way the waves rise and fall, and gauging the Galleons sails speed to yours. I have anchor turned right as a galleon is about to overtake me and guess what, they FLY past me and with a 2man sloop our anchor is up in 4 seconds and we are already going the other direction. At this point I do other things as well but those are trade secrets :).
Ask questions, Learn, and go out and do. Don't be afraid of just engaging. Get a 2man going and don't even worry about loot, just go galleon hunting. My friend and I do that sometimes just for fun.
@djm-xr07 When it was just the sloop and galleon I liked the system of having to sail upwind when being chased by a galleon because upwind might just bring you to the red sea or if the wind changed and you didn't pay attention you would be caught. But then came the brig that gains on you upwind if they tack now and then but if you stay spot on and stay upwind you can still stay ahead of the brig enough to fight another day if your lucky.
But I still like the sloop galleon speed spread.
