Just wondering if this game is $60 at launch with a subscription fee or just $60.
Will this game have a monthly subscription fee?
@l87-deathtron There are no games on Xbox that have a subscription fee (That I know of) and since this game is going to launch onXbox, I doubt that the Xbox version nor the PC version would have a subscription fee at all. The only other game that I've played which has a subscription fee is EVE online, but even in that you could pay the subscription with the in-game currency. A part from a subscription fee being a major d**k move, even if you only had to pay the fee every 3 months no one is going to do so; the population will go from having over a million players to having a few thousand in the space of an hour.
***"Now, at E3 2016, Rare has finally laid the matter to rest. Sea of Thieves is not free-to-play.
"We've done a lot of thinking around the business model," veteran Rare employee and Sea of Thieves design director Gregg Mayles told Eurogamer yesterday.
"One thing I can tell you is it's not free-to-play. We didn't say anything last year and then some people made stuff up, y'know, 'it looks free-to-play!' But we can clear that up - we will not be free-to-play."***
It's clear it won't be free-to-play. Notice this does not mean "oh buy it once, and play for free." The implication is it won't be free to play it past initial purpose

This close to release, Rare would have announced by now if it was going to have a monthly fee. This game is their flagship for getting back on their feet after the whole kinect debacle. If they sprung a monthly fee on all of us, AFTER we've bought the game on release, it would be suicide for the future of the company. They'd be ranked with the EA demons in the gaming industry.
@Barnacle-Blake You'll buy it for 60$ and be sailing the sea until your eyes bleed. (if your anything like me :D) The only extra you pay is the micro-transactions, IF you choose to buy them. You don't need to at all, it won't affect your progression in the game.
@joda1123
Its up to microsoft what the costs are and how the players can actually access the content. I personally think its a good idea to both have a simple subscription of 11 bucks which gives you access to a large number of games, some new, some old, along with the more hefty cost of buying the game itself. It balances the market and expands the player base through marketing rather than advertising. More people can afford $11 a month than they would be able to afford $60-90 once off.
Regardless, the game is amazing. Games are meant to be enjoyed. Simple. If someone cant enjoy whats on offer, then they need to look elsewhere rather than ruin the experience for others@consularwand133
Thats something you will have to check out on the microsoft store. Some of the games are able to be played on both PC and Xbox, but I have a feeling the actual bundle subscription is only for Xbox. Check it out and report back?@Neragov
@SPYKUSi found this on their FAQ page.
Can I use Xbox Game Pass on my Windows 10 PC?
Xbox Game Pass can only be used on Xbox One consoles.so :(
It was confirmed in a tweet a few months ago that although game pass officially doesn't have support for PC play anywhere title work the same as though you had purchased them. I would suggest using the free trial to test the theory though with SoT when it comes out out with existing play anywhere titles on the service.
Check this article for more information
@barnacle-blake the only subscription fee there would be is the Xbox gold membership for people who play on Xbox not PC.
@joda1123
The market is different for consoles and pc's. People on the xbox already pay that little extra for gold pass and at the end of the day, I too would aim to be without a subscription, but my opinion is based around the xbox community rather than pc. Maybe they'll make a deal for you guys too at some point but either way, I simply dont gain enough to afford to splurge $90 on the full game. I can afford $12 however, so its all based on preference and what you can afford.Agreed with everyone here. I would hate for there to be a subscription fee myself, and I would have to return my purchase! I hope micro-transactions will be enough for them....but there's so much weird info like the article I quoted going around. The real worry for me is: no developer or producer on the game has outright said "there won't be a paid subscription for this game besides xbox live costs"
It's all just not been said. And if it hasn't been said, it 100% does make me anxious in thinking it's a very real possibility they may make it a monthly subscription cost. I kind of hate how people here are talking 100% like they KNOW it won't have a monthly fee (oh just buy it, and thats it! sail the seas!). OK...but where are you getting this information exactly??

I cant believe this is still debated. The cost of the game is the initial purchase price. It is not a subscription unless you count xbox live for xbox players. You pay the initial price of whatever that is in your region then you play simples. After that its just cosmetic items like pets.
Why can't you believe it is still debated? Let me ask you: Where is your source on this? Or is this just all your collective assumption of it? Believe me I'd love for this to be the case - but can you cite any developer proof of this being the case? There's a reason this is still debated. People here don't like to create their own assumptions to sleep at night about it.
@famed-villain I am unsure of any game to this date that started out as a paid game and then imposed a monthly subscription.
SoT is a Cost up front (depends on country) or an Xbox Game Pass for $10 per month. There is no in order to play you must pay past the inital cost unless you have the game pass.
Microtransactions are a thing, they will be implemented for the first confirmed items which are pets. Monkey, Cat, and Parrot. Maybe others, but those are the promised 3. They did however say there is a way to get a pet in game from one of the videos without paying, so maybe it will be both.
Xbox Game Pass Essential? Premium? Ultimate? What's the difference?
