Ship upgrade

  • I'm sure this topic has been mentioned somewhere on the forums previously but I thought I might as well write my prospective on this topic. I have played many pirate games throughout my time as a gamer. With this in mind, I would like to give my thoughts on one of my favorite parts about a pirate game and that would be building a stronger and stronger ship. I recently replayed assassins creed black flag and found myself wanting to constantly upgrade my ship, whether it be sails to increase speed or cannons to increase my sheer fire power. So far I haven't heard too much on ship upgrades with sea of theives. If Rare chooses not to incorporate the upgrading of ships I would think this would be a big mistake. It misses an opportunity to give players descretion in how they want to play at seas. One player/crew should be able to play with a ship with a ton of fire power and can turn on a dime but another player/crew should be able to upgraded to a ship that is a speed demon with high crows nest to see enemies from far off. Players should be able to own personal ships that they can upgrade using the riches they make from their quests. Then when joining a crew ships could be on display and the group as a whole chooses who's ship will best match that crews play style.

  • That is actually a great idea. Being able to select the ship you like from the group. Just concern about the matchmaking process... Sometimes you get inside a crew is already done, I think most of the time. I am just thinking when is the best moment or how you can use your ship... Maybe there is an store on the outpost where you can do a vote?

The thing about SoT is that looks and feels easy to pick, easy to play. Adding extra UI contexts and selection screens could go against this idea. But definitely there are ways to solve that. And I am sure RARE knows how to do it.

On the another hand, there should be a seller for the ship, where we can check our ship model an buy things for it, and to be able to upgrade on that store.

  • @natalparachute4 I really like that idea and if Rare doesn't want to get that complicated they could have preset classes of ships

  • I'd be happy with upgradable looks on a ship but it shouldn't have any impact on damage, speed, etc., of the ship.

Like choosing different hull styles for the Galleon and Sloop. Different masts and whatnot.

  • I like the idea of different classes of ships such as one built for speed one built for damage and one built for durability with maybe one that's somewhere in the middle of all 3 but if you have a system where you can gain an advantage by upgrading damage and what not stronger players will tend to congregate in certain places to get better loot which will keep new players away from that area, also you would have the players who would grief the low level ships and create a toxic environment for new players so it's best to make it an even playfield all the way through and just let skill be the only deciding factor, but if the classes are available to everyone from the start I don't see why that couldn't be a possibility 😉

  • ^Sorry about punctuation and what not it's late and I'm 18hrs into my 24hr shift! 😅

  • I'm all for upgrades but Rare seems to just want to stick to cosmetics only. Why? idk just want to keep things simple or maybe it'll take to much time to balance things who knows. I agree it's definitely a missed opportunity.

  • It would definelty be a lot of fun to bring a building mechanic to the game like ark and Conan for building bases and ships.
The ability to design and then upgrade your building matierials, sails, and weapons. Having wieght, quality, health of items effect how your ship handles and speed it travels as well as its defense and offensive Capabilities
    Would be amazing

  • @tumtumhero
They don't want to create barriers to entry. Hence, horizontal progression.

  • IMO horizontal progression doesnt mean you cant upgrade the ship in the sense of less speed but more cannons or more speed but less planks/cannonballs you can store, that sort of thing. But the base ship you get is balanced all round. Everyone likes options :)

  • I like the idea of being able to customise our ships maybe not the performance but definitely the style and colour! It's best if people are on the same playing field that way it's a crews skill that set them apart not the fact they've spent loads of money on there ship!

  • Ship upgrades that enhance one players ship over another’s could maybe get into the barriers that Rare is steering away from. I like the cosmetic progression idea they have though, and perhaps they’ll add cosmetic ship upgrades. But they want everyone to be able to play with everyone at the same level regardless of player progression. So we’ll all have the same weapons, no special skills, ships will all be balanced the same ways, and I think that will work perfectly.

I've pretty much beat this subject to death by now but...

IF they implemented a system where you could upgrade or change a certain aspect of your ship, BUT it negatively impacted another part of the ship. It would be fine. infact it would be more than fine as it would open up new avenues of play and a lot of unique and interesting situations would arise. it'd also let the player base truly customize their experience as a pirate in the game and play how they want to play in a fair and balanced fashion.

    Here's a link to a thread i made on this "Side-Grade system"

Yep, horizontal progression done right. Fingers crossed this approach for aspects of ship customisation is what they've implemented :)

  • Touching on parts said above.

Having a base ship, small or large and being able to adapt it could maintain a balance ie a faster ship would be lighter thus less resources and weapons or even less hull plating.
More hull means more weight thus slower but can take more damage
    More firepower means much slower.
I suppose maybe a toggle option in the shipwright could give a selection of choices but only one can be active at a time idk just thinking out loud.

Main thing i want is customised figureheads or maidenheads i think they were called... The sculptures attached to the front.

  • Lol I’m just talking cosmetic skins to change the appearance of your ship even would make me happy. I love to be able make my ship look like a Junk or a Brigantine. If they gave you skins just for the madden head it would be awesome too. For some reason I don’t think full customization will happen for a while like changing and building designing the ships. But skins I see as a possibility

  • I highly doubt there will be side-grades. They're more likely to have base ship designs, allowing for cosmetic upgrades. However, like in any multiplayer game, it will all come down to the crew. The smaller sloops are indeed faster and more maneuverable than the larger galleons, but they can still be caught if they don't catch the wind.

Honestly though, I don't like the idea of these kinds of stat upgrades. I don't like the idea of expending every canon ball to take down a single ship, or being caught and boarded by the enemy just because I'm slower. It would turn into more like the item systems in moba games: keep the better you are the more powerful you become up to the point where you're unstoppable. Unlike mobas though, you can't just forfeit this game, as it's continuous, meaning you have a chance of coming across that same ship again, but now it's stronger, or faster, or harder to take down than last time, and you're still as you were.

I would rather this game be skill based. The pre-alpha has done a great job to show those that played the skill curve, and I would honestly like it to stay that way.

  • @natalparachute4 I personally think that IS a good idea, but with downsides.

Like for example, getting more speed lowers your turn rate. Or maybe a more resistant hull and sinks slower, but can't carry heavier cannons. Heavier cannons also need more loading time.

So, basically an upgrade also has downsides, keeping the game balanced and also making us have a very unique ship to our own character.

  • I thought somenone said they are not going to do any thing that changes stats. So old salty dogs can play on an even playing field with noobz.

This games is going to take luck experience and hard work no one will Truly have any advantage over another

  • @the-lion-turtle Yes I completely agree... I think doing anything other than appearance (which I think is enough) would greatly mess with balance of the game depending on crew size.

  • I'd really like to be able to add more sails and rigging. If you look at a real square rigged ship, the ones in SoT are a bit bare. Adding jibs, a spanker and shrouds would certainly boost the look and speed.

  • @s4lohcin
The ship upgrades (cosmetic) has already been announced =D

  • @muscularfish898, does that include more sail?

  • @agentsalvo
Yes you can customise the sails colours and designs as well as being able to choose your figurehead on the front of the ship (which I guess you will unlock by killing mythical creatures)

  • @muscularfish898, ah but can you add more sail, that's what I was talking about.

  • @agentsalvo
As far as adding more sails I’m not sure but i know for sure that we can use either a small boat, a large boat and there are rumours of a trading boat. Can’t wait until release, so hyped.

  • Hows about being able to not really upgrade the cannons but change them. Ie you have high power close range cannons. medium/medium and long range low damage cannons. then you can change up your game play a litlte. gives more options. a small faster ship with long rane cannons could snip at larger gallions.

is their any talk about different ammo types? grape shot canon balls for damaging? hows about being able to dammage other ships cannons? ie cannons have health if you geta direect hit you can in theory knock out the ships guns and then take it over gives the rew a chance to surrender?

how does the ships work as in if you die in your gallion how do you get them back sorry i have not played the game just looking at options for it and if its worth buying or not when it releases. watched a lot of videos but not many explain what is really going on?

and if it 100% how i see it atm die get new ship on respawn everyone has the same guns and changes to ship at all. then that makes doing said quests pointless other then buying things to my=ake youlook pretty?. so would this not make the Game a game for Trolls. IE just take a ship and crew and just go around wiping out everything you find if you die rince and repeat.?

  • @natalparachute4 They will likely have cosmetic ship upgrades, and we don't yet know what 'legendary pirate' ships will be like. But customizing your ship for speed/firepower just is not what the developer's intentions are right now, and I for one like it that way.

  • @foldingnickel2 A friend of mine had serious doubts about the game from reading the forums and watching youtube videos. I finally convinced him to actually play the beta with me and 6 hours later he couldn't believe how much fun he'd had.

The point of the game is going to be becoming a legendary pirate, and we don't yet have all the details on what exactly that means. But we know it gives you access to a special harbor and ship (how special IDK). Just going around and wiping out everything you find will not get you to legendary status. It's also quite difficult to actually engage a ship more than once that just wants to be left alone.

Thats good to know, so if you want to say run away you can.?. I love eve online well i used to to game burned out for me around a year or so ago. I was hoping this was going to be the same kind of game IE sand box open world. I just love the idea of spending time doing quests to get gold to upgrade your ship and be the bigest meanest b***h on the ocean if ya know what i mean. may give it a go.. if and when the price drops a few months after release. but £50 seems a little steap for me. atm never know the after full game releases may be some gems in that that push it over the edge.
Something to keep my eyes on.

  • @foldingnickel2 I never really understood the $60 is a lot of money thing... That's like one night of going out somewhere for two people versus how many countless hours of play time...

Anyway, yes, if you play smart you can pretty much totally avoid ships. Keep someone always posted in the crows nest and look around with the spy glass. You can return to the outpost to turn in chests as often or not as you want to risk. We always keep one guy on the ship while we are digging up chests to look around and get the boat ready to keep us safe.
