Land ownership

  • Will we ever be able to own land in Sea of Thieves? I think it would be good to be able to have a house, or fort to store loot. Another idea is player controlled towns and ports.

  • @johko13 I'd love to own a small island and build a base, but, with the current map size, I don't think that's possible :( However, putting in towns (Not outposts) that players fight to control for the factions? That'd be pretty cool and would be a good mix of ship bombardment and sword/gun play. :)

  • I love the idea of owning a plot of land on which you can establish a house/fort, and to have it be a physical location on the map would introduce many complications, but perhaps have it be instance based, and have an immersive way of connecting an instance based player housing location to a large open world

  • Mate, your ship is your player house ;P but seriously, while it would be pretty cool, I would worry about my little island getting looted constantly. I would rather have my own personal ship, the crew can vote on who's ship to use, and you'd have more customization options. There's plenty of room on the larger ships in the hold, and moving some barrels around can create more room on the sloops.

This would be a cool pvp idea. Whoever takes control of an island gets bonuses of some sort; % of money when people buy things, whatever.

  • This sort of system might work in an instanced environment (I'm thinking like the player towns in Lord of the Rings Online) where each player has a private house or crew stronghold where they can customize the appearance, be social, etc. I'm not so sure that having a persistent world ownership would mean much because people would likely spend a lot of time farming for control of the outposts to gain any loot benefit from owning it. So I am worried it might instead create a class of "voyagers and explorers" and class of "griefers"

  • I'd would love to own an island, and as @WhenKoalasattak said, the current map size is a problem, but what if somehow you could generate a random map and owning an island there and also hosting that map in a private server and connect it to the main sea of thieves server by providing public access from the main server to your private one (passing trough a mystic gate and selecting an online server where you can jump in) and in that way you could avoid the memory overflow and also you give the opportunity to users to do whatever they want in their own island. That would be fantastic.

  • @whenkoalasattak
that could be fixed by another post I saw he was talking about private servers

Yes! Also, restrict spawning on death to islands your factions control. After building up points from controlling enough zones, spawn a limited time/one sink game over 10-msn man of war for your faction to go on a pillaging rampage.

  • The key thing to additions like this or any sort of sidegrades, is that it would have to be session based, I think if rare tried to fit more ideas through that hoop there could be a lot of interesting things added to the game such as this. Maybe you have to earn the right to the place through an npc similar to the legendary hideout but in a short session based way. Earn your right to use their town and you can dock/scuttle your ship and have your respawn be at this island/town (not outpost I wouldn’t think) or some other creative ideas that lets us play in new ways.
