Now, I don't want to cdenegrate the SoT community as a whole, but I think we can all agree, where the Sea used to have regular communication between strangers, alliances and semi comradery, we now have a default to toxicity.
The first year I played this, I found an alliance regularly. I would send up a white flare and meet other players, make friends, have a shared game experience, and ultimately, feel part of a community. Sure, occasionally there was backstabbing and shenanigans, but people were at least willing to talk to eachother.
This year when I returned to the game, I have noticed the default for most players is shoot first. Hourglass pvp matches no longer end in "GG man" instead you have salty cursing trash talk like "You're trash" ... "You suck at this", which I would posit is a result of the toxic encounters players are collectively experiencing. When a community has a toxic default, it makes friendly players not even want to engage, or even play.
My suggestion is this. Alliance specific events or quests. A series of activities that require at least 2 boats to activate, with plentiful rewards. Something to encourage players meet new people, and work together. Cultivate a community that isn't necessarily seeing every single ship on the sea as an instant enemy.
**And no, there is no reason a player that enjoys occasional friendly encounters should be forced to play safer seas and remove all pvp. Sometimes pvp as part of an alliance is fun too!
Thanks for listening, have fun.
