Safer Seas, High seas, friend lobbies, and toxic players. A hot take that shouldnt be hot.

  • Without massive amounts of copium, its obvious that safer seas is a punishment for not wanting to be chased across the map after spending 3 hours on a treasure hunt or something then randomly coming across some blood thirsty 12 year old. We are ALL aware its called sea of THIEVES. Its not called Sea of PvP. Rewards in safe seas should be the same as high seas as there is no harm done to any player involved. Not only that, no PVP rewards would be attainable in a safe lobby, thus making the precious achievements of the pvpers still prestigious. I highly doubt pvpers give a single [mod edit] that some guy got a cool sail for his ship playing solo. Ive read every argument pvpers have against friendly or equal lobbies and its all purist [mod edit]. Its one thing to spend hours starting some treasure hunt to then be killed midway through; its a completely different thing to have the quest restart itself after being sunk. You dont convince PvEers to want to stay in high seas by griefing them in any way possible. So you say [mod edit] it and turn around to give em a good fight before you sink and they just camp your spawn in a disabled ship. If thats the glory yall are fighting so hard to protect then i couldnt hope you fail anymore than i do now. Hate me all you want for this opinion.

Secondly it seems a little ridiculous that in a game with as much potential, we are limited to joining friends on ONE boat, and only fighting toxic players with a .00001% chance of coming across a friendly or cooperative player. Why is it so hard to have lobbies in which players can join their friends on SEPARATE boats and sail together that way. The potential for pirate adventures is endless but we placate to who cry about others succeeding when it doesnt harm them. You can say Safe seas reward loss is about balancing but that doesnt hold up either. If we are being forced into the hunt or be hunted roles then i dont see this game lasting long. Which it isnt already. Theres tons of people who just want to go on adventures as a pirate with their friends without someone spewing lisp spit on them talking about how the title of the game has "thieves" in it. You cant even use your own boat in safe thieves. The list of issues goes on, and the only blockage for thousands of more players coming to this game is a few purists who cant dare watch people have fun in a different way.

  • @sirantelope The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but also families and players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly becomes available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and become a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.
