Steam Download Size Crunch? (Currently 131.58 Gigs)

  • I'll be honest, I've been thinking about doing some HG grinding again because I've been getting into more streamlined and competitive gaming again through Deadlock, but as it stands right now, it's not feasible for me to download Sea of Thieves due to its massive Steam download size. I believe this is the 2nd largest download size for all the games I have in my Steam library, the first being the full download of Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2.

I'm not sure how feasible this option would be, but one of the ways Space Marine 2 was able to reduce the game's overall download size was by making the highest texture settings optional free DLC to download with the game. This reduced the game's file size by over 100 gigabytes, while still keeping the textures there for anyone who would want to use them.

This has also been a reason I have been unable to download and test Insiders for a long time, as the game's download size is too large for me to have two copies of it on my PC while still having other games and software downloaded.

User Edit: Poor wording on my part, but I said "not sure about the feasibility of this" because I'm not too sure if this is even why the game is so big. It could be asset bloat or other reasons I'm not familiar with. All I do know is the game is HUGE

  • We're in 2026, and players can't purchase a SSD yet? It almost recommended or required by default for any gamer to have one.

Sea of Thieves due to its massive Steam download size.

SOT is a baby compared to all the popular games Steam offers.

  • I always wonder why a lite version is not a thing yet.
The Xbox series S version is 40 GB, so its definetly possible.

SOT is a baby compared to all the popular games Steam offers.

Sea of Thieves ≈ 130 GB
    Crimson Desert ≈ 150 GB
    Baldurs Gate 3 ≈ 150 GB
    Elden Ring ≈ 60 GB
    Red Dead Redemption 2 ≈ 150 GB
    Grand Theft Auto 5 ≈ 120 GB
    Arc Raiders ≈ 35 GB
    Battlefield 6 ≈ 80 GB
    Resident Evil Requiem ≈ 75 G
    Pragmata ≈ 40 GB

Sea of Thieves is among the biggest babies. 👶

Are you even keeping up with tech news?
Do you know that RAM and SSD prices have risen significantly in the last six months?

I think we're seeing posts like the OP because of the current situation and it's not an unreasonable bit of feedback.

Rare, I'm sure, have it on their radar. There may be things they can do (optional high quality assets, optional Tall Tales) but I don't think it's necessarily easy with 8+ years of spaghetti code and tech debt to get around.

130gb is a baby compare to anything else. Not even a sweat for modern computers out there. If you’re so scared of it. Get a portable hard drive like everyone should have

What else? I gave multiple examples for popular games and except for the real monsters among them (Red Dead Redemption 2 & Baldurs Gate 3) there really aren’t many above 130 GB. At least not that I‘m aware of.

Not complaining. To be honest, I couldn’t care less about Sea of Thieves‘ file size. Nevertheless it doesn’t seem to be among the small games.

You were given a list of examples. And a portable hard drive is still affected by the price increases.

    Cite examples.

Not sure what the obsession is with maintaining the status quo here.

IF Rare can optimise the size of the game so it's smaller, that is better for all. No need to keep it large, if it doesn't have to be. The OP has given valid feedback in this regard.
