Trading doubloon chests, moving alts to give main chest, fooling swabbies, alliance servers was this the intention with doubloon event?

  • Everything else about the weekend was fun. I thought the fireworks were great. The checklist wasn't too bad and I had a funny interaction lying to someone about trading doubloon chest so he can play music at Flameheart. The fishing event was fun too.

However, the doubloons and obtaining them are a big miss. People quickly learned that you might as well hunt people down to trade with them instead of actually trying to "steal" them. I had nobody interrupt me during me doing all 6 of my smuggler voyages. I stalked around the area and had two friends also on different servers / regions. Nobody was doing them. I figured this was a region and console only servers issue, no worries.

Then I start seeing the youtube videos and the LFGs. People asking to trade in alliance servers. People getting on alts so their main can steal the doubloon chest. I saw a streamer lock down a swabbie's boat and tell them to do the doubloon mission and they can keep their treasure as a "trade."

Then not to mention, if the crew that gets their chest stolen leaves, ragequits, etc. the chest literally disappears. The shipwreck with the other chest in it? Can't access it now because sirens stop spawning.

Like I feel I should have just cheesed it instead of doing the voyages that were given to me.

    So my recommendations:

Let people do as many voyages as they want of both quests or increase the number and/or doubloon values. Yes, some people will just grind out the entire event and buy everything. But people are also going to just cheese it like they did this weekend but now people who actually did the content as intended are at a disadvantage and have to wait until next month.

If people are actually doing the quest throughout the weekend then it makes more organic opportunities for stealing instead of the alliance servers, alt hopping, trading chests that happened.

  • The problem is that Rare wants to control the amount of doubloons a player can get so that they keep coming back every month to do the weekender. The voyage limit makes sense in this case. The unlimited stealing works against this and opens up a bunch of loopholes with trading and alts, as you've noticed.

I don't think they can limit the ability for any account to get a voyage (e.g. alts) because then they are cutting out legit new players from being able to participate.

I think they need to cap the number of doubloons you can get from these crates no matter the source, or remove the ability to start these voyages yourself. I'm not sure how well making these voyages random or findable (message in a bottle) would be, especially during a weekend-only event.

  • This was all predicted on insiders.
It was common knowledge and pretty much a given, so it safe to assume the knew a small few would do these things.

I'm in the same boat as you, no pun intended.

On Thursday, every boat we sailed over and spoke to, had no idea the event was going on, nor were they interested in taking part. Not a single boat on any of the servers we kept diving to thurs/fri/saturday was doing the doubloon run. We waited for hours at Crescent before we finally threw in the towel. They told us to make up for the shortage of doubloons by stealing them, yet didn't tell us the chest would vanish if they cancelled. I seriously am not interested in doing the next event, and whatever is for sale I'm going to seriously ask myself if this is worth it. My guild had to cheese this in order to earn enough, and even then-- doing this over the course of a few hours--not a single ship came by save for a single sloop that attacked us, and got nothing for it. Probably had no idea we had a doubloon crate on board.

My guild and I were talking about this, and we came up with a few ideas that would greatly improve the event:

1- Lower the prices of the cosmetics. Since they've already been reduced once on Insiders, I highly doubt they'd do it again, so this one probably won't happen.

2- Have the voyages repeatable for the entire event. I was with friends who decided to test these voyages out, and after doing his 3, suddenly my 3 voyages are worthless to me. If the next weekender event isn't going to be as generous as 4 days (which has been rumored to be so), having 3 voyages I can't get credit from is pointless, and only encourages alliances (which we did).

3- Have a way for players to earn doubloons outside of the event. I don't care if they add 100 doubloons to the chest of legends to make voyages/world events that contain it, valuable again. I'm still able to earn any faction's rep outside of any time-limited event. I'm still able to earn gold outside of Gold 'n Glory weekends. The same should be true with doubloons.

  • @europa4033 The chest does not vanish if the voyage is cancelled. Maybe for the lost shipment, but this is not the case for the other doubloon chest. I had people cancel their voyage in front of me and I had people scuttle out of the server and no times did I lose the chest. I got a handful of steals in, but overall there was not many people on the line and most of the people on the server straight up avoided the golden line. I did many dives as reaper 5 just to track emissaries and they were all staying away from the golden line.

All in all, I think this event would have been made better if we had unlimited voyages to do instead of just 3. Most people play solo so in order to get more than 3 sells you have to deprive someone else of their ability to get doubloons at all. We had 600+220+75+300+(5x65)=1520 doubloons we could have earned prior to and during the event on our own and over 5000 doubloons worth of items to spend them on. Even stealing to the cap wouldn't get you enough to buy everything. Even if we could do unlimited voyages, you would still have to do at least 25 of them across one weekend to be able to afford everything, and most players won't put up with that time commitment. As it stands with just 3, they did them fast and at like 2am so no one would bother them, if they cared to do them at all. If it was unlimited, people wouldn't be so afraid of losing the chance to get doubloons. I don't see a downside to making them unlimited.

Anyone with any sense would not run their emissary while doing these voyages. No advantage in doing so as no multiplier.

  • @pc-monkfish I don't disagree with that, the point remains that anyone who did the voyage did so as quickly, quietly, and invisibly as possible. I trawled the line for most of the weekend and only saw a few people at all, and most of them said they already did their voyages early in the morning before anyone else was on.

This player experienced it already. It would make sense they tie the voyage to the crate, otherwise you could put down 3 voyages, collect the crates, cancel voyages, and deliver them all in one trip. Fast, efficient, and takes no time at all to do, so Rare wouldn't let that happen.

  • @europa4033 It must have been bugged for them, or its bugged for me. I stole a handful of doubloon crates and I watched many of the players cancel the voyage as I stole it, and it did not disappear. I was camping a player so his boat would sink and he scuttled, and his doubloon crate did not despawn.
