PvE-Only Pirate Careers - Expanded Exploration Content

  • Hello pirates,

I’d like to speak for a group of players that may not always be the most visible: explorers.

Some of us love Sea of Thieves for its atmosphere, its sense of adventure, the sailing, the discoveries… but struggle to fully enjoy it because of constant PvP encounters. Not because PvP is bad — but because it creates a very different kind of experience.

For players like me, being chased or attacked breaks the immersion we are looking for. We’re not here for the fight — we’re here for the journey.

And I truly believe this is not a lesser way to play, just a different one.

    Suggestion: PvE-Only Pirate Careers

What if we had the option to create a pirate that is permanently restricted to Safer Seas?

This pirate could only play in Safer Seas

In exchange, progression would be fully unlocked (no current caps)

Players could level up, unlock ship customizations, and fully enjoy long-term progression

This pirate would never be allowed into High Seas

This would be similar to PvE servers in games like World of Warcraft.

    Why this matters:

It would make the game accessible to more players

It supports different playstyles without harming PvP players

It increases long-term engagement for more relaxed or solo players

It keeps High Seas intact and competitive

    Additional idea: More “thinking” adventures

For players like us “peaceful and not-so-great fighters” 😄, it would also be amazing to see more quests focused on puzzles, storytelling, and exploration — similar to the Monkey Island Tall Tales.

These kinds of adventures bring a completely different flavor to the game and are incredibly memorable.

Sea of Thieves already has an incredible world — this could make it even richer for all types of pirates.

Thanks for reading, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

You make it sound like PvP happens every time you set sail in "High Seas" Which it doesnt.

Not because PvP is bad — but because it creates a very different kind of experience.

Experience is its a PvPvE game.

    Safer Seas or Custom Servers.

    Safer Seas...

In exchange, progression would be fully unlocked (no current caps)

Players could level up, unlock ship customizations, and fully enjoy long-term progression

Explain how one would unlock the curses. Do the Burning Blade, a complete cosmetic requirement that needs PvP. You are still restricted...

It keeps High Seas intact and competitive

Makes the game less about the adveneture and Journey but about "My wants, and I want a Single Player game"

  • The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but also families and players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly becomes available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and become a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.
