New Navigation Feature: The Shallow Wrecks

  • The idea is to introduce fixed "Shallow Water Zones" across the Sea of Thieves, marked by shipwrecks and bright sandbanks. In these areas, the water level is so low that the ship's draft (how deep the hull sits in the water) becomes a key tactical element. It's a high-impact gameplay change that requires no new weapons or complex NPCs and enemy types, simply utilizing the game's existing buoyancy and collision physics.
    Impact on Ship Types:
    • The Sloop (1-2 players): Due to its shallow draft, the Sloop can sail through these zones freely. This provides smaller crews with a fair, skill-based escape route against larger pursuers without changing combat stats.
    • The Brigantine (2-3 players): The Brig takes a hybrid role. It is too deep to sail over the shallowest parts blindly but agile enough to navigate narrow "deep-water paths" within the zones. This requires high-level coordination between the helm and the crow's nest to avoid grounding.
    • The Galleon (4 players): The core of these zones is inaccessible to the Galleon. If a crew attempts to cut through at high speed, the ship will bottom out, take hull damage, and lose all momentum-similar to hitting a rock. However, these zones are high-density loot areas. This encourages the Galleon crew to anchor outside and use the Rowboat to retrieve treasures, finally giving the rowboat a crucial strategic purpose.

  • I don't know about the "high loot area" part, but having more interesting navigation challenges via shoals and sandy shallows seems pretty fun both from a perspective of encouraging naval and from a perspective of play and counterplay for running and chasing. The naval part of sea of thieves is often underutilized, but it has some of the best unique potential in Sea of Thieves.
