So, that PvP season, huh?

  • I finished act 1 in a few sessions, and the hourglass improvement was... well, it improved the experience for sure, but it didn't make me want to PvP any more than was necessary. It really felt like a patch rolled out as a seasonal update.

I guess this just felt like an empty season - I could barely muster a full sloop, all my friends were so dispirited.

I realize this is likely due to behind the scenes cuts from Microsoft, but I hope act 2 is better than this - and that it doesn't require entry into a high stakes deathmatch as the ante to take a seat at the table. This is a PvPvE game, and thus far, this season is all PvP, which breaks the inherent promise of Sea of Thieves.

Because they cut a bunch of planned content for this season in order to reorganize/regroup. Hopefully it is worth it.

  • You don’t need hourglass to pvp.

My dear frequent responder, I will ask you to read my post once more. Please understand, I am well aware that one does not need the hourglass to engage in a battle woth another player. Freeform combat on the open seas is, in fact, the majority of my player versus player interactions.

To reiterate, this thread is not about whether or not Hourglass is the only mode in which one can engage in Player versus Player combat. This thread is about the malaise of a season in which acts 1 and 3 (and, we’ll see about act 2) are dedicated solely to engaging in said deathmatches under sanctioned rulesets.

Fair enough, but don’t forget that HG has gone without love since its implementation. Currently the changes are being received positively, and those who’ve long been asking for changes might feel heard.

I personally don’t get much out of seasons usually, unless there’s something interesting to fight over, and/or fun cosmetics to gain in the process.

Hourglass is about as low stakes as it gets, especially with the update. No loot you spent hours getting, no supplies you had to gather, if you aren't confident you can lower after every win, if you lose you can get right back into it.

The only thing at stake at this point is your ego.

Aye, I would never argue that these changes weren't direly needed (they were, though I would have gone lower on the number of supplies you get), but patches to existing content do not new content make.

  • did exactly what i figured. boosted engagement for a week. well 2 weekends anyway. playing on a boosted weekend feels great. even 1 win makes so much progrss but playing outside those boosts feels awful and slow. i get they wouldnt wanna make the journey too fast to complete. but 1000 levels is a lot. even if we could buy 1 level a month this game wont be around long enough for anyone to be able to buy their way to 100 let alone 1000.

but yea the cheating issue still a problem. i imagine this "arms race" is just like everything else rare has done. they push out 1 fix then neglect to look at it for years. if anything i imagine ezanticheat has a bunch of toggles. they just kept turning up the settings and now its on max and still not catching everything. the act structure was supposed to be gone. i dont think they mentioned 1 last season of acts but here we are. ive started to feel a sense of calm over my decision to have this be my last season. the idea of putting this game and all the awful developer decisions behind me just feels great.

since you havent been paying attention i guess act2 wont be better. doubloon deletion. new limited cargo voyages to regain what they pointlessly took away just to force us to login more. and being limited voyage count getting that high ticket item stolen will feel almost as good as year 1 pirate legend voyages with 1 chest of legends behind a 2 hour voyage as the only way to progress.

last man standing is a good concept. but also just a new arena mode we asked for way back when. but since the cheating issue hasnt been resolved. not to mention the various other exploits available in this game i can imagine people cheating. heck i might even give cheesing it a try since no doubt they will add some dum achievement to winning a match because why let anyone sit at 100% on this game?

  • I have been kind of sitting back watching the game off and on and it feels imo like they are either winding down the content to "finish" the game, or they are working on something in the back that they arnt talking openly about yet. My personal hopes are they are working on all the much needed patches in mass, and thats why things for the game have been pretty slow since their stance on fixing issues in the past has always been silence until the fix is out. But that kind of hope of fixes being whats pulling away from any new content has been less hopeful lately and i feel like their years of tech debt is slowing everything down on the dev side of things.
