SoT News Accessibility In-Game

  • A conversation I was having with a few friends about the state of the game yesterday brought something to light. Most of the information, news and posts about the game and game development are on social media in full detail. While this is definitely better than having the news be inaccessible in game, I feel as though people like myself who avoid social media like the plague desire better information about the game state and development decisions. Most of my info about game updates and announcements comes from being sent a social media post and going “WHAT THE BARNACLES THATS (Insert positive or negative reaction here)!”

I’d like to propose the idea of having a ”news stand” and patch notes menu in game for more information outside of the default header that shows up when a new update comes out. It doesn’t have to be too in depth, just a book using the captaincy log framework players can flip through to get full notes on changes would be a great improvement in my eyes.

Why a news stand in game? To be honest, I just like the idea of jumping into the game and interacting with things at the outpost as an immersive experience. I wish the outposts had more to do at them outside of voting up flags, shopping and checking out NPC dialogue. Being able to see total War progress (total ships sunk, highest streak weekly, etc) for the two factions of Guardians and Servants to make the fight feel more impactful is something wildly unnecessary but I’d personally love going down to the hideout and the lair for. Little attention to detail features like this wouldn’t actually do much for the game outside of immersion though admittedly.

Bonus points? Have whoever does the Pirate voice in the announcement trailers voice an NPC running the news stand. He’s nailed that voice and it makes the trailers a lot of fun to listen to.

  • Absolute lovely idea.

  • Idk there a thing on the main menu that asks “what new” or “going on” and gives you a short but easy thing to read.
