How the Burning Blade Could Be Fixed

  • For many of us who have gotten the Skeleton Curse, I would wager that most of us continued grinding out Hourglass or commendations in order to try and get more cosmetics to cover our bones with. For me personally, I really want to get the Obsidian Bones, and have finally started to approach that goal in terms of hourglass rep. That being said, I have one other nagging problem in the acquisition of the obsidian bones which I have consistently had a problem with ever since Season 13; I cannot for the life of me find the Burning Blade. For reference, in Season 19, on Community Weekend, I hourglassed for a total of 8 hours, always seeking and getting on new servers, yet in all that time, there was not a single server that actually had a Burning Blade in it while I was there. I am well aware that they toned down how often it spawned after Season 13, as its chances were increased so that players would have a higher chance of engaging with it, however in my experience, it feels like they added an extra 0 to that chance. I have been off and on for the past several seasons, due to content not being something that's interested me, though when I have been on, I've failed to find even the slightest sign of the Burning Blade anywhere which is quite an issue when you need to find (at least) 10 of them, as well as complete 8 rituals and turn it in for the commendation to get the Obsidian Bones.

This is quite the issue I would say, and one of many with the event. Others include the fact that the world event itself is super boring to play with, as you end up just sailing around the server for the ~2 hours it takes to get to each island, complete it and sail to the next. And, during this time, you are either at threat of having nothing happen at all, which is equally or more boring, or you may reach a ritual stack of 6, when a random player who server-merged in after hourglass comes in and proceeds to slice up your and your crew's bones into dog toys before sinking the blade and taking all the loot, leaving you with nothing to show for the time you wasted. Considering you also cannot start voyages, nor can other world events spawn while the blade is active (player controlled or not), and the only way that BB players can increase the ritual streak is to go to the skeleton camps and complete them, the world event is, as a whole, quite stale by now.

I'll suggest a few ideas/changes that I think could make the Burning Blade a little bit more active and interesting for players whilst possibly being a little less monotonous as a whole.

1.) Adjust some of the commendations - While I'm sure the commendations that the devs added initially were perfectly fine in hindsight, they do not scale well to the current playerbase who either avoid it at all cost, server hop away from it for a different world event, or will sink you. I'd suggest to account for this, go through at least some of the commendations and adjust them so that they're a bit more reasonable and don't require you to seek them out so vehemently (for example, for the Playing the Part commendation, instead of having to get and sell an 8 ritual streak 10 times, maybe only make it 5 times).

2.) Readjust the "Spawn Rate"- It may be a good idea to check what the actual value is or chance of it spawning in as opposed to other world events, and maybe just give it a small bump up as it seems to be significantly less common than any forts of fortune, fleets of fortune, or other 'rarer' world events. This way both old and new players still have an equal chance to get the Burning Blade in current seasons.

3.) Revamp some of the mechanics on the Burning Blade - I'm not saying that they should fully remove the gameplay loop on the Burning Blade, however it should be possible or viable to be able to do something else with it in order to either get the streak up, or simply make it more valuable or fun to play. One possible option would be to turn an exploit that it had early in its addition into an actual feature - Allow the Burning Blade to be in the Hourglass Queues, however it cannot dive, and has to be invaded, and players that choose to seek it out must select an option to fight a larger ship, or just specifically a Burning Blade Crew. This would likely help give it the PvP aspect that it should have, whilst not forcing players on the server to have to try their luck unprepared. Another idea in this case would be to allow the crew of the Burning Blade to be able to start Reaper Voyages, and perhaps in some way, rather than getting loot items, it could give them a ritual streak for completing the voyage, or it could just be normal.

3.5) Remove it from the World Events Queue - I'm not as strongly opinionated on this one in itself, however as some people have suggested in the past (And yes I'm aware of the problems that this will cause in the way I say it, however it should still be at least considered regardless) it may be better for the Burning Blade to not actually take up the world event slot when it's in a server. Instead, perhaps it should be separated from the actual world events and act more as an emergent threat, similar to the Ancient Megaladons (If it were like this, then the devs could also make it so that when you reach grade 5 in Reapers, if a Blade is on the server, you can see it on the map, though this would require removing both the tornado and the map icon until it's player controlled). Then, just leave it at that, don't ever make it take up the world event slot, just have it there, and world events can come as normal. You could even have completing (certain) world events as the Burning Blade give a ritual streak as well, to possibly encourage players to try and hunt it down, or allow either the crew of the Burning Blade and/or the Players of the server to ignore each other.

4.) Revamp the loot pool/rewards - Something which may be partially helped by some of the above suggestions, the loot on the Burning Blade (especially without the Chest of Fortune) sucks. There is almost no value in sinking it as opposed to just leaving it alone or taking it over. The Burning Blade itself is as valuable as an ashen lord skull, which can be gained significantly faster than sinking a Burning Blade, especially a player-controlled one. Instead, it could be a better idea to make the loot gained from sinking the Burning Blade stack or increase with the number of rituals it's completed, on top of the loot that it may collect passively as it does some of the other things that it could do if these ideas were implemented. To balance this, it may be more reasonable to prevent players of the crew from accessing the stacking loot / the loot that spawns in the bottom deck, and it should only generate when it's sunk and despawn when the blade is turned in. This way, Players can't jusst sell the most valuable treasures on the Blade before going on their day, making the ship almost entirely worthless to sink, but in this way it would also allow the crew to get more loot and sell that if other players take too long to sink it, and still make a profit. On top of this, change the Burning Blade item's base value. Increase it to something a little more reasonable for the challenge of sinking a player controlled vessel (Or don't if it's not). But then you could also implement the idea used for the Orb of Souls into the Burning Blade, so that even if a crew didn't complete that many rituals, they would still be able to increase its value while keeping it on the server for a while. This way, if the Blade is actually worth taking on, more players may choose to actually sink it for more than to cycle world events.

I do love the idea of the Burning Blade event, however it's simply far too boring (and at least for me, uncommon) to be able to enjoy as much as I should be able to. I would love if Rare went back to this event and made it just more enjoyable to play and less of a grind the entire time.

  • I cannot for the life of me find the Burning Blade

First it spawn to much, than to little, follow by not enough, finally ended with "its in rotation"

    Now...it gone. :/

  • @archtenebrae I love every single idea, ESPECIALLY THE HG DEFENSE (LIKE IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE TO DEFEND THE LOOT IN THE HULL!), but I think the commendations are fine the way they are currently. Yes it was a pain to get obsidian bones, but that’s the point is it not? The coolest cosmetics are much harder to get.

  • @h0b0jo0e You aren't wrong, they are supposed to be a bit of a challenge, though as it stands right now I feel it's far too tedious for so little reward. Beyond the fact that players must get the skeleton curse prior to being able to even progress the achievement (which does make complete sense, yes, but for people who want to 100% commendations I'm sure they dislike this greatly), taking almost 2 hours per tenth of progress for the commendation (with no guarantee of actually getting it b/c of other players ofc) seems incredibly not worth it to me (not to mention the fact that the actual cosmetics tied to it require you to either double your hg level or quintuple it). If some of my suggestions or others were implemented to make the streak a bit different to increase, I'm sure that this commendation would be fine just the way it is though.

  • @archtenebrae

When it first came out, we'd have to fight other ships just to vote to captain it, and even then, it didn't matter if their ship sunk since they'd board/hide on it and wait until it was "captureable" by another crew, vote, and steal it from them. Each time we had it, the entire server came after us, ships shooting each other just for the chance to sink us. It was insanely contested, absolute chaos, and my crew and I did nothing but the Burning Blade for a solid 2 weeks until we earned everything. My flex would do the constellations so fast. We had ships forming alliances to attack us. It was non-stop PvP, and thrilling for us.

Now all of a sudden, those commendations are too difficult and tedious to do for something that gives such little reward? Easy solution -- don't bother with it.

  • @europa4033 I enjoyed the fighting for it as well, and back when its spawns were boosted it was perfectly fine to lose it. I'd gone through the exact same things on the first ~3 days of the season, and I agree it was great. It was very engaging when it was, and when the whole server would try to fight for it, you'd have a fun story to tell whether you won or lost, and if you did lose it didn't matter because you'd be able to find another one in just a few servers. It was great, and I'd love for that type of engagement with it to haappen again, however I never seem to be able to find a server with it, and of the VERY few times I have been aable to find it, it's usually not player controlled, and if I take it over I get left alone for the entirety of the time it takes to get the 8 ritual streak. I don't mind having to fight while I have it, and frankly, I'd prefer to have some fighting of other players to break up the monotony of doing rituals (Yes, they can be done within 2 minutes, but that doesn't make them fun to so often), however that doesn't ever seem to happen. In current seasons it either goes fully uncontested, or a player significantly better than you will come in to sink you. And that would be fine if getting the streak didn't take as long and/or the Blade took less time to find.

I do not know what sservers you play on, and I don't know if I've just genuinely managed to have the worst luck possible when it comes to finding them, but I do not find the Blade when it comes to searching for it or just generally playing. That is probably my single biggest problem with the commendations. If it takes me 4-6 hours (which is usually my average play-time per session) just to find 1 Burning Blade in whatever server I may be in and I decide I'm going to commit to trying to get an 8 streak for the commendation, then an hour and a half in, I get sunk and it's just a blatant skill difference, I'm going to be annoyed about it, more for the fact I've wasted 1.5 hours for something that gave me no progress to the commendation I'm trying to unlock, whilst it also means I'm going to have to go searching likely for another 4 hours at the minimum, all assuming I find it to begin with. I don't think that's a good way that commendations should have to be completed.

Another commendation that will really suffer due to the lack of interaction with it is the commendation to sink (or sell the burning blade of, I can't remember) a player controlled ship that had at least 3 rituals in it. There's simply so little inclination for new or old players to interact with the Burning Blade unless they're expressly trying to get commendations, that it leaves almost no one wanting to interact with it and thus making finding them player controlled, and especially with a lot of rituals in them an even larger struggle now. That's why I'm trying to suggest some things that could be done to try and spark a reason for players to interact with the Blade itself, whether it's for controlling the blade or as incentive to sink it.

I have to say that I don't believe "don't bother with it" isn't a very reasonable excuse for the devs not doing anything to at the least change how the Blade is acting currently, because once more, I believe if they give some form of player incentive to actually engage with the Blade as well as actually making it a little easier to access would be a good step in the right direction at the very least. Commendations (and especially ones that aren't locked behind having to get grade 5) shouldn't have to force 10 hours of monotonous activity when you could be doing something more engaging like hunting players in the sandbox, completing normal voyages or tall tales, or even Hourglass.

Personally I've had to fight for the blade either solo or duo which has been perfectly fine in essence, however to me it sounds like you may not have actually been trying for any activity with the Burning Blade yourself (I could of course be wrong but you only talked about your experience with it early in the time it released but not anything about how you've used it now) because of the fact you grinded out the commendations really early into their release (Something which by now I've realized I should've done as well so I wouldn't be having some of these problems). If that is the case, I'd suggest that if you want to possibly see what I'm talking about, try to replicate the 8 streak commendation, solo or with a duo, but not a full ship and try to be the one who's focusing on doing the rituals. If you do actually do it, and you have just as much contention and enjoyment as you did when Season 13 first released, then there is probably no issue with the Blade at all, all the commendations are perfect the way they are, and I'm just yapping about nothing (And I'd apparently have genuinely been unlucky this whole time for getting them.) If not, then could you see or at least consider why I feel like there needs to be at least SOME form of change?

  • @archtenebrae

If I was in your situation, I'd hop onto the SoT community discord servers in a galleon channel and advertise what you're doing/looking for. Have each member that joins spawn a galleon on their own servers, looking for it. The member who finds it, invites the others and off you go. It's how my crew and I did it. If you're having difficulty solo/duoing it, you might need more crewmembers to help. There are players still looking to sink that thing and turn in the sword with 3+ rituals, so being prepared with a full crew is in your best interest. In this past week alone, I've seen about 7 Burning Blades, 3 of which were crewed. Having each member look for it is the fastest way to find one, vs. spending hours waiting for one to spawn. Expect ships to come after you, although it probably won't be as many as we had when the event first came to the game.

  • @europa4033

This ^^ There are still people looking for BB content on the official discord. I’ve gotten a few turn-ins that way. I still need 3 more. I just lack the motivation.

  • @archtenebrae

If it's too hard or too tedious for you to get an 8 ritual streak 10 times, then do something else.
Nobody is forcing you to do it.
