Doubloon Sword Earning Feels Unfair for Long-Term Players

  • As someone who’s been playing since around Seasons 2–3, I think the current requirement for the Doubloon sword (50,000 lifetime doubloons) is a bit unfair for a lot of long-term players.

It feels less like a reward for dedication and more like a requirement that only a small portion of the playerbase can realistically reach. Many players have put in a lot of time over the years, but not everyone has the ability to grind doubloons at that level due to work, school, or other commitments.

Doubloons are already a relatively limited currency and not something most players accumulate in huge amounts through normal gameplay. Because of that, the current requirement ends up excluding a large number of consistent players who have been active for years.

I think there are two better approaches that would make this feel more fair while still keeping the item prestigious:

    1. Reduce the lifetime requirement (for example, to around 25,000 doubloons)

    Or,

    1. Bring back the original purchase cost and apply a discount based on a player’s total lifetime doubloon earnings

The second option in particular would allow past progress to matter while still giving players a clear and achievable goal going forward.

Right now, the system feels like it checks past grind rather than encouraging current engagement. A more flexible approach would better respect player time while still rewarding long-term dedication.

I think this would strike a much better balance between prestige and accessibility.

As someone who been here since D1
It’s an ugly sword and if you have a problem with it, there some other meaning behind it.

Don’t let a silly 50k thing become the death of you.

  • Pretty sure you'll be able to buy that sword later on with gold / doubloons / ancient coins later on. Or achieve it with some commendation.

  • @burnbacon Lol. I know but still though 😅

  • @korpp1s One could hope, but it would be nice to change it before hand though.

  • We had this argument weeks ago and they changed it from a purchase to lifetime. There's no chance they are going to modify it again.

  • they really created a lose/lose situation with this whole nonsense reset. first the whole concept is flawed by adding an event that will allow us to easily cheese and regain all the doubloons we would need to buy literally even cosmetic they add per rotation. then they add a cap to try and prevent people from cheesing but all this cap does is pad our playtime even more by making us have to goto a vendor. spend the doubloons, then back to cheesing.

then trying to add fomo cosmetics for people who had hoarded the doubloons.... but then change their mind from needing 50,000 doubloons to buy it to just having earned 50k lifetime, also while we cant even see how many doubloons we have even earned in the past... So now it went from a sword that would be rare on the seas to something thats going to be common. some players due to poor decision making (converting doubloons to gold), or skipping some seasons so now they have old season cosmetics with insanely high doubloon costs for a cosmetic that isnt worth the price tag they put on it. meanwhile gold cosmetics which look cooler are nearly free. so with this life time change for the sword its almost like they added the needed to have even more cosmetics. an item for lifetime 100k. lifetime 150k. 200k. 250k, 300k etc....

honestly the reset was a bad idea all around. there are plenty of better ways they could have delt with the currency issue. as they cant balance anything in this game the best bet would have been delet doubloons period. make everything gold. jack up the price of everything. have the old seasonal cosmetics they are bringing back as costing a LOT of gold.... problem solved. instead they created drama for no reason. butchered a whole season worth of pve content. and now the whole next season is just being able to play on a custom server where you can make no progress and literally do nothing. no doubt it will make for some interesting community stuff but the tools will be too limited to do anything meaningful. and the game has been built from the ground up on cosmetic collections and earnings. so having a whole season based off 0 progression content.... making it free for all though at least was a good choice. but i also was getting vibes of some unspoken stuff in that video where it seemed like they were catching themselves from adding the disclaimer that custom seas was only going to be free for this season.

the reality is the game still needs money to keep the lights on. and the long time pvp oriented players arent buying things in the cash shop anymore. all their attempts to get money from the community based off silly and failed ideas like pirate profiles, which honestly just something for streamers to hide their new names? or for the rare few people who want to start over, losing all their fomo to clear their cosmetic chests of clutter because rare wont add a way for us to address this issue ourselves, nor will they add a way to favorites cosmetics. the ability to reroll our pirates look... better idea. though the pirate generate has always been something the players felt needed work and has not ONCE gotten an update. not even a simple gender slider, weight slider, nothing.

your post seems to be based off the fact that you think you havent earned enough to get this sword. but if i understood what they were saying as long as we play during this season we will all get the sword when we reach a 50k doubloons earned milestone.... not that there is a milestone for that. but that just adds to the lack of uniqueness this sword will have. and while it is the better looking of the cosmetics imo... theres way cooler swords i wouldnt feel the need to wear this just to show off that i played a lot. its like every other supposed status symbol in this game. the hourglass curses were supposed to be a symbol of something people worked hard for. but exploits that allowed them to be so easily obtained early on and people cheesing with whatever method never got punished. wether it was the shores of gold cheese, the gator roll ship trick, alliance servers queing up for hourglass so the attacker would spawn in to a 5 ship vs 1 ship battle. again no one was even punished back then and it took them forever to fix this. so not only did people get easy lvl 100 curses theres a lot of lvl 1000 curses out there people got via whatever tedious cheese method they wanted to do the most.

so yea. from the sounds of it, especially with the ability to easily gain thousands of doubloons over a weekend. so much so that they made a 4000 cap meaning you should easily be able to make 10k per weekend so within a few months everyone still playing will have the 50k sword. so youre good.

100% not the case. As it currently stands, you can only earn 1,300 per event (provided you do everything successfully), with new items costing 2500 each, and 6 returning items costing 1500 each.
