Console / PC / Cross Platform

  • Dear Rare,

I think the elephant in the room that not many players talk about anymore is the ongoing issues with cross platform play. We understand that efforts were made to mitigate the issues that came with the arrival of PC players by way of offering us the option to choose our "preference" as to who we are matched with on the High Seas & Hourglass. We understand that if the game can't match us with other console players using controllers we will find ourselves encountering PC players as a means to keep the seas as busy as possible and HG matches happening without unacceptable waiting times. The truth is, many PC players have a technical advantage over console players, they have higher frames, better processing power, they use keyboard and mouse and console players use consoles, televisions and controllers which is comparatively lower spec, lower performance and limiting for anything competitive in game.

Sea Of Thieves has an aesthetic that seems to be geared towards a younger audience and it is the younger audience that theoretically could stay playing SOT for a long time depending on their experiences in the game. Statistically I presume younger players are by vast majority playing Sea Of Thieves on consoles and by majority PC gamers are adults. Other age of sail, sea fairing games that are more tailored towards a more mature audience are arriving on the market more and more like "Ahoy" which may see a gradual decline in adults playing Sea Of Thieves as time goes on, as they move over to games that appeal more to a more mature audience, therefore I feel it is important to nurture the audience that will be with you the longest but still in a way that doesn't alienate the mature audience that remains.

A hostile encounter with another crew before PC players arrived used to feel better, there was always a chance that you could win, hold your own and even if the other crew seemed more skilled and better at Naval & PVP, it felt as though luck could turn to be on your side, the tides could change, the wind could blow just right and it felt like there was always a potential to win or at the very least escape. Encountering other players now is a lot of the time down to a coin toss. Double gunning, wrist flicking with a mouse and everything assigned to hot keys on a keyboard with higher frame rates is incredibly difficult to compete with using controllers on a console and it usually results in PC players spawn camping console players followed with toxicity via text chat which can morph into a form of online bullying. It makes the whole experience not very enjoyable particularly for younger players on console and not very challenging for PC gamers who would likely prefer to have exciting, fast paced, sweaty engagements on High Seas and HG more often rather than just putting lambs to the slaughter without much of a challenge.

I suggest that you submit a pole and present the question to the players if they would like Console only / PC only servers. I don't think it would be good practice to remove cross play as an option but there should be a way that Console players and PC players could opt to play the game exclusively with others using the same platforms even at the expense of quieter seas and longer wait times for HG matches, it would benefit the games health and longevity to have an option that goes beyond being just a preference like we have now. I feel that having an option to play exclusively with other console players would even the playing field and make the experience of sailing on High Seas and participating in PVP modes more enjoyable and more fair for all. PC players Vs other PC players exclusively would also provide that community with something resembling a more equal and proportionate challenge for competitive play which would improve the culture of High Seas and HG.

Safer seas offers players the ability to learn the ropes, level up a bit and get familiar with the game and it's great for very young players, families and the like but it is also used by players to complete commendations and other tasks without the risk of losing progress which means high seas may be getting less populated with console players and more populated with PC players as Console players migrate to Safer Seas for these certain activities. I believe Console only servers would be an invitation to return to the high seas and PVP modes for console players who have migrated to Safer seas which I feel over time would result in higher numbers playing in the shared world again.

The only way to know for sure is not to ask the players why but to present a pole, have players register with their accounts and vote Yay or Nay on the question of exclusive servers for Console and PC platforms and monitor what platform votes Yay and what platform votes Nay.

One side will undoubtedly be a resounding Yay.

  • @soloventure6142 I don't get it, you already have the option to choose console only, no?

  • @captain-knyt

    Hey,

No, that's a common misconception. It's not a "hard border" it's just a "preference" so the game will attempt to pair you with other console players using controllers only if you opt in for it but will still pair you with PC players as well.

  • @soloventure6142 Well that makes sense then

  • Yes it does.

There should be a way to completely disable cross play. The reason there isn't is to maintain server capacity to avoid empty servers and long loading times and waiting times for HG matches etc but there is an issue with server capacity because of cross play, or at least it is a big contributing factor.

  • I'd just like to point out that PC players have been around in this game ever since release.

  • I suggest that you submit a pole and present the question to the players if they would like Console only / PC only servers.

    We can already do this.

the game will attempt to pair you with other console players using controllers only if you opt in for it but will still pair you with PC players as well.

Attempt and pretty much succeeds. But if, and I mean IF it cant find a server with just console, it will drop you into a Pc/Console lobby with both. How often has this happen? I have never seen it since they seperated the two and Im always in a console server. (You can tell by the number of chill people)

Now if your asking for a Strict, Console/Controller only lobby. Where console players cant use KM, that be another difficult challenge. Many ways to fool the system and such to have both.

  • @soloventure6142

So no, I play on playstation and I've never in my life changed my settings that way. I prefer servers with all types of players.

Also i've never done SS before... is that normal? (and yes, my first session was on the high seas)

And i haven't even done the maiden voyage.

Maybe I'm just a different kind of player? I do like the challenge that this game brings. So that's why I do everything in "challenge mode" when i'm playing. Whether that be matching myself up against all kinds of players, diving to hourglass as a solo sloop, learning the game without the help of the Maiden Voyage, or anything else. I prefer the challenge.

  • If you have the setting to prefer console & controller players on, youll only find console & controller players.
Theyre only saying that PC players could end up on those servers, so noone can complain if it happens by mistake, but its actually not possible.

You can try it out yourself.
Open a console server and try to invite a PC player.
    It wont work.

I've been playing since September 2021 and never met a PC player on Console servers.

  • The only way to create a hard separation between console and PC is via the Xbox privacy settings. There is presently no setting in game that does this.

Actually the Maiden Voyage was quite enjoyable, for new players it provides a great way to introduce them to the game in a way that connects with the lore and how your pirate first arrives in the SOT, there is also a nice cinematics as you travel through the shround to get to the SOT, before that there is some dialogue with the pirate lord, there are also commendations to do there too and it's a nice location.

Safer Seas didn't come around until much later than when I started playing SOT, there were also no checkpoints on Tall Tales either, the game is a lot easier than it used to be in terms of leveling up rep as well. Although Safer Seas is restrictive, it is good for new players and families and people wishing to enjoy the Tall Tales without disruption or distraction, particularly anyone who might be interested in lore, story and the characters in the game. It also allows players to level up to 25 with all factions which is nice for new players and I don't personally have anything against it even though I among many didn't have that luxury.

As for liking a challenge challenge, it is common knowledge that playing on PC with a keyboard and mouse offers an unfair technical advantage to PVP over console players using controllers in most games. It isn't a question of skill, there is a lower skill ceiling imposed on console players due to system specs and playing with controllers and for those reasons, it makes sense to stick to competing against others using systems with the same specs, this doesn't reduce challenge it just takes away the opportunity for PC players to have an unfair technological advantage over you in competitive play by removing yourself from cross play. No one is saying you have to do that but it is possible to do so, not in game settings as that is just a preference but via x box privacy settings and it does make for a fairer playing field.

However you want to play and however you enjoy the game is up to you though! Happy sailing!

  • @dermasterbob

When you select console only it prevents PC players from being able to join your crew on your ship but it doesn't prevent you from being matchmade against PC players for HG or ending up in the same server as PC players on other crews on High Seas. The official reason for this is to "maintain server capacity."

The only way to create a strict separation is via Xbox privacy settings and disabling cross play.

  • @shadowfox327533

Challenge mode is really playing this game solo. Hourglass and High seas. Not much to do with cross play or skipping the official introduction to the game I don't think.

  • Turning off crossplay is so crazy... you do realize how many people use cheats on controllers im not saying what it is that can be used but it is there. Also you can learn to play better playing with PC players with their little advantage. Im console and don't have issues playing against PC players and am a daily HG player. PC players have been in game since the beginning its not new. Also if you don't want to play with PC at all if you are on xbox go turn off crossplay from your xbox. That's all you have to do. I'm sure Playstation has a similar thing too. But just remember if you play HG you may never find a match or it can take a LONG time

To turn off crossplay on Xbox navigate to Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize > Communication & multiplayer and set "You can join cross-network play" to Block. This prevents matching with players outside the Xbox network, though it may increase matchmaking times.
