The Most Unaware Pirate?

  • My friend and I were doing one of the new Ashen Garrisons as a Level 5 Reaper on an Open Crew galleon (please join us so I don't have to subject myself to that torment anymore) when this guy joined. Okay, fine, but my friend was alone inside trying to solo the garrison as I kept an eye on our galleon (there was a brig vulturing nearby). Suddenly, this guy starts prepping to leave by dropping sails and trying to raise the anchor. WE'RE LITERALLY AT AN ASHEN GARRISON. Sails up, anchor down, harpoon bridge set. Like, you can't mistake these for Sea Forts.

But no, Swabbie tries to raise the anchor and go on, of all things, a Skull of Siren Song quest. I nearly threw my controller at the t.v when I saw Briggsy appear and start yapping. This genius wanted to ditch our Ashen Garrison for some stupid joyride across the map with half our crew absent. So, I called up my friend on Discord and we threw Swabbie in the ship's brig. 2 seconds later, we get this message whining about "why?". Gee, I wonder. Probably all of the selfish, bad decision-making. So he rage-quit...and missed out on a lucrative voyage that only ended when someone suggested "let's stack!". That's how we got sunk. As a retired professional i.r.l bank robber once said: "once you got the money, get rid of it all as fast as you can".

I'm so sorry. I suffered with randoms for the longest time before meeting friends in this game, and let me assure you -- for a while there, I thought I was going to lose my mind. I'd tell my friends about the insanity, and they refused to believe that I had nothing to do with it. So, I started recording my sessions just to prove my innocence.

One galleon I sailed on, the captain raised the first port and starboard cannons, placed a fireball in each one, and said those cannons were not allowed to be used since they were decorative.

Another galleon I sailed on, ended with 2 guys arguing when one guy managed to park our ship nose-in on the side of the dock you spawn in on at Daggertooth to sell by hand. If anyone came at us, we'd be sunk.

I saw someone wanting to do Merchant on a brig. I messaged them and asked for an invite. This person's first question to me wasn't if I was experienced, or how many levels or hours I've played. No. First thing he asks me is, "Are you a..."scaredy cat". I HAD to see where this was going, so I rolled with it. "No I'm not." "Good," he typed back, "Cause I'm not selling for two hours," and then I got the invite. The other guy he invited, put the cannonball crate on top deck between the cannons. The Captain demanded that they be put in the barrels, in case we ever got boarded. A huge argument breaks out between them, and they both leave.

So, I've been there. I laugh at these videos now, but back then it was pure insanity.

  • I mean dropping sails I don't get but there's no reason to leave your anchor down if your sails are up.

Voting on the siren song voyage doesn't mean you actually have to do it, I usually vote on it to track any boats on the server doing it or if the final island is near me I can set up an ambush.

The reason we had our anchor down was so that our ship didn't wander off (this happens sometimes if you have your sails a bit down and your anchor fully up). I checked his maps and they would've sent us on a ridiculous trip. His plan, as far as I can tell, was to leave my friend (the captain and owner of the ship and guild) to joyride our boat across the server doing the stupid skull quest, then come back when my friend had solo'd the Garrison by himself (not impossible, but certainly not easy).
So while you're correct in that voting on it doesn't mean you have to do it, Swabbie had every intention of trying to solo our galleon through the half the map with a Reaper 5 mark on his back.

It's too many cooks in the kitchen and no established chain of command. 2 people fight over who's in charge while they're in the middle of a battle, one person tries to fight but is terrible at it, and the other is AFK because they want Door Dash AND the gold. Dude, I don't care about your shawarma; commit or get off the boat. This truly is the worst with open galleon, which is why I try to get my friend to stop doing it. "Oh, but we'll recruit people!" Uhhh...no. What we're going to get is us doing all the work while a pair of newbs goof off.

  • @unseemlytag yeah in your case the guy seemed like he wanted to go on his own adventure. But I've joined crews where pirate legends try and stop me from raising anchor when sails are up and wheel is straight lol

Well, it doesn't always completely stop the ship. It locks it in place, but unless you're anchor down/sails up, you're not 100% stopped. If you have sails up/anchor up, you can still drift a bit.
Aside from that, this dude also tried to shoot me until he ran out of bullets. Shoots me, tries to steal the ship and leave my friend to go on some stupid adventure...I was floored when he asked why we threw him behind bars. Like, forget ABCs, can we teach kids how to be accountable for stuff first?

  • @unseemlytag it does stop the ship, I've been doing it for 8 years....

  • @rambobrad had a similar experience where a guy with the ancients outfit (the really hard one to get) kept trying to do level 1 gold hoarders quests
