Addressing "Black Powder Merchant" and "Merchant Forager" commendations / achievements

  • Ahoy Rare team,

It’s been a long time that I wanted to address this issue. You see, as a trophy completionist, I’m having such issue with Black Powder Merchant and Merchant Forager commendations, and by extend their achievement and trophy counterpart. I accumulated hundreds of hours sailing the sea of thieves, and I only managed to deliver 3 out of 100 kegs required, while delivering fruit crates I got absolutely none of them standing at 0/50 progress since I never found a single quest asking to deliver fruit crates. I find obtaining these delivery quests only from messages in bottles, or from mysterious journals, all randomly spawned, absolutely painful since it is extremely rare to get either quest when finding either object. And considering how extremely rare these quests are to get, the amount of deliveries required for the commendations is out of proportion, requiring hundreds upon hundreds of hours.

As a result, I plead you to change the way we obtain these quests. I believe they should be added alongside other Merchant Alliance voyages. Add more of them inside barrels, and other storages. If not, maybe you can change the criteria of these achievements.

Whatever you can do to resolve the feedback, I’d be grateful. Thank you and have a nice day.

Years ago, I completed these by looking for parchments in barrels at outposts. I don't know why they were removed.

  • I don't know why they were removed.

Because. Players who go up to barrels, and “grab everything” without taking time to pick and choose. Ended up with 10 messages in bottles they never wanted to do.
Those same bottles that had those easy to do voyages. Those same people who are now complaining they can’t complete those commendations.

    Circle of life. XD

  • "Simple" fix would be to use the merchant bottle asset that are part of the lost shipment voyages. Have them wash up on shores or appear in barrels of plenty. These have guaranteed chance to have one of the delivery missions.

Or make it part of the delivery missions for animals and what not.

The smuggler bottles are everywhere which I know is part of the current lore, but yeah merchants are on life support for this quest lol

I bet it was people who already completed it were whining (as is tradition) and the people who were doing it didn't mind. Also, the people who cheesed it probably don't care either way too.

It is a quality of life fix that can be addressed in a few ways.

The easy fix in my opinion would be to add both of these as on-demand quests for the Merchant Alliance that could be started from the quest table aboard your boat.
The Black Powder quest should give you a delivery quest with a random number between 2-8 kegs to be delivered on time.
The Merchant Forager quest should give you a delivery quest with a random supply crate (wood, fruit or cannonballs) to be delivered on time to a Merchant Alliance representative.

Another alternative could be to utilize the Quest board at the Outpost docks and add special Trading Company quests there such as for the Merchant Alliance.

  • @hammerpunch I wish that Rare could read this and consider changing it. So it is the same with 1000 skeleton captains commendation, when each and every single should count, not just in voyages and quests.

  • @maxiem0us3 You would think they would read their own forums :)

  • @hammerpunch i think they used to but they kept taking all the criticism too personally. so they hired someone to do all their social media but i think that person was instructed to disregard any criticisms. which most people coming to the forums are here to hopefully try and help make the game better via suggestions. the forums are dead right now so it would be very easy for them to keep up with.

its kinda like why insides was under nda. people have always criticized their programing (myself included) even though its very much a situation of "well if its that easy go make your own game" kinda thing right? i think more than the rough coding in this game is their llack of ability to internally test things. because they make the stuff. test that it works then move on. they dont put things through the paces, they dont do the things players would do. our mind sets are completely different. they design stuff to work a certain way so why would they try to use that thing in a way they never intended it to be used?

a good example of something insanely simple they could have caught. you never used to be able to give items to other players. this was a feature added in the first month or 2 of the game... well... it worked fine..... unless you tried to do it IN THE WATER.... which you know is MOST of this game! lol but why would 2 people be in the water side by side and 1 of them try to give another one a piece of fruit? so giving each other items in the water would make your character fly up into the air.

they make changes all the time without thinking about rebalancing. which is assuming they consider balancing in the first place. you would think they did because of healing and ammo limitations. but did they rebalance things when they added more than 1 type of fruit? no. when they nerfed weapon damage across the board did they rescale pve health? no. i think sharks still take 3 shots when they used to take 2. they did eventually rebalance mermaid statues and skeletons due to the scaling with crew size update with the quest table. but that took years to get and was needed much sooner.

not rebalancing commendations is insane. especially now. even finding a green message in a bottle is rare because of these stupid smuggle bottles. i would love to see the number of people who pick up those at this point. and how many even bother completing them if they do pick them up? i just ignore bottles now

  • @roborob-r66y Let's avoid spreding misinformation, please. Rare has an extensive community team, some of which are dedicated to monitoring and collecting feedback from the forums and other social spaces then forward that feedback to the relevant dev teams. This has been the procedure since start. No one has ever been instructed to 'disregard criticism'.

Furthermore you have some speculations around insider, among other things a lack of internal testing which is not correct.
