I already spent all my doubloons - GG I guess?

  • I've accumulated THOUSANDS (Probably over 100k+ doubloons).

Never spent them on doubloon to gold transfer. But I didn't play during seasons 1-5, and with nothing else to spend them on.. I started buying all those cosmetics (which cost 1k+ each item)

Now that I've bought all those 1-5 seasons cosmetics and have 697 doubloons left. You're going to make all those cosmetics worth gold? Not only that - I have no doubloons left to buy the limited time doubloon memento cosmetics you'll be releasing?

    RIP.. Kinda upset about that.

Although we haven't seen the prices of the cosmetics yet.. so maybe there's hope for me still.

  • So what is the issue here?

You, the player spent your DB and...are upset?

  • Instances like yours, OP, are why I think that they're going to make these mementos very affordable. Not that I think they should, but I think that they will.

  • @bleu-solo

I think this is the main issue I have with the proposed time-limited rewards, it penalises players for:

    1. using the currency as intended
    2. making the best of a failure on Rare's part to balance it

Unless they do regular resets, I think the whole situation will just happen again anyway.
They're also going to have to remove doubloons from commendations or you end up with experienced players not being able to earn the same amount as a new player.

I don't mind the idea of the rewards, but I think the way they're going about it is flawed and not considered. It has the potential to leave a very bitter taste amongst the community and it's not necessary.

I would much prefer (even if I could afford them with my ~7K) that they remain in the Black Market at a high price, a doubloon-sink. That way no-one loses out unfairly. If you can't get them before the reset, maybe you could save up and get them in the future.

  • @burnbacon
Yes, I can see the issue was lost on you - so here we go:

The doubloons which are a harder to obtain currency were seen as almost valueless for many players because no content was being added to purchase with them. Then - like a stock market, overnight they suddenly became valuable - because now we get an update to be able to buy limited time cosmetics with them for those players who have a "too many doubloons" problem. Well I myself HAD a "too many doubloons problem".. and had I known there would be some limited time cosmetics linked to honor the people with this problem, then I wouldn't have spent them.
The same items I spent my NOW VALUEABLE, and harder to obtain currency on, will (after the update) be available for purchase with the easier to obtain currency - gold.

Who could have predicted this? - maybe I should keep my hoard of doubloons for when they do a currency reset and allow me to purchase limited time items. MY BAD - thus the "GG" in the title.

This is why, in MY OPINION - which may not agree with YOUR OPINION.. I've been sucker punched by the devs. Because they released a doubloon sink (making old season cosmetics available for 1k+ each).. even for some c-tier/f-tier items and now they're going to dangle s-tier (limited cosmetics) in front of your face once you've spent all your currency which has gained value overnight. It's a rug-pull.

I bought buckets, compasses, instruments, beards, and bought them simply because that was the only thing to spend the doubloons on for 1k+ PER ITEM.

I'd rather have spent GOLD on the items like everyone else will after the random, arbitrary, unpredictable update than all those doubloons that I spent which NOW mean something when I possibly miss out on the limited cosmetics.

Wish I could return some of my items to get my doubloons back so I can buy those same items with gold later and not miss out.. or even if we got a 5% reimbursement on our doubloons spent on items. Then I'd have probably 5k doubloons to assist in buying the limited time stuff.

Not sure how else to explain it. It's pretty simple to understand from the first post. If you don't understand then be glad that you're not affected, but realize that this is my feedback. I personally feel like I have been wronged - it doesn't feel good to have been baited like this - so my feedback for the devs is that. Hopefully they can come up with a fair solution by the time they make the change.

  • @bleu-solo

I understand why you're upset, in terms of bad timing, cuz it was a bad timing to spend them. That sucks indeed.

However, what if they never decided to do this? You'd remain happy with all the doubloon purchases you've made.

Bottom line is - what ever Rare did or didn't in regards to doubloons, one side would be/remain upset. How much time do you think they should've announced this change upfront so people do not get upset - a year in advance, two?

People have been asking for years now for more meaningful use of both the doubloons and gold, and have been asking for Black Market/time-limited stuff returned, while being sick of all the good stuff being spammed into the Emporium.

In the end, of all the 100k doubloons you've had, is it really their fault you've suddenly decided after so much time to spend basically ALL of them in one take?

Idk mate. The timing sucks for you, but I'm siding with Rare here (which is not something I regularly do). At some point in time, they had to do something about this. And I'm not sure honestly how better they could've addressed it.

If you have any better suggestion, I'm open to hear it.

  • @bleu-solo how much gold do you have? I only ask because I think the simple solution would be for Rare to temporarily reintroduce the Gold to Doubloon currency conversion. I honestly don't remember what the conversion rate was back in the day, but bringing that back would be a neat way to enable everyone to get those time limited mementos if they so choose.

    Like this 😄:

  • @SweetSandMan As far as I remember you could never exchange Gold to Doubloons. Only Doubloons to Gold.

@r3vanns I'll only be upset if I end up missing out on those special items when I otherwise wouldn't have. We don't really know what/how much they cost so we'll just have to wait for that announcement.

"However, what if they never decided to do this? You'd remain happy with all the doubloon purchases you've made."
It's true.. but they were spent without the comprehension that those items I bought would later be available for gold. And if they never decided to do this the problem wouldn't exist - there wouldn't be these unknown valued limited time items for players who have too many doubloons before the reset.

    Adjacent Rant:

I just don't understand the reset anyways. If players have too many doubloons - I'm sure they could buy some previous season cosmetics like I did and get rid of them. If they already have all the season cosmetics then it's likely they'll already have the items that are being brought back in the black market after the reset. So those veteran players with nothing to spend doubloons on will still have nothing to spend doubloons on post-update.

Versus if they didn't reset doubloons and just made those "lost to time" items available for lots of doubloons (like the old season content is currently) - then you get rid of the doubloon problem because people would spend the doubloons.

I guess they're desperately in need of players to keep playing and keep doing things to address "the seas are feeling quieter" reports.
So the real point of the doubloon reset is to try to make players feel forced to play monthly to be able to afford those things in the shops instead of being able to buy the items with their already earned currency in one-go as soon as they come out if a reset didn't occur. Because if they're able to just buy the items straight up as soon as they come out - then they won't have any added playtime. They'll be expected to re-earn them. 🤷‍♂️ Seems extremely predatory IMO.

I'm just now for the first time reading the YT comments on the Developer update and it's comment after comment telling them this is not the right move. How many times are we going to watch these developers disregard their player base? Keep stabbing themselves in the foot and wondering why they can't run.

I was out of town so I only just saw the announcements when I came back - that's why I'm a week and a half late to all this now old news. I'll be getting a late-start on trying to grind out doubloons before the reset happens.

  • Imho they should have added more content to current doubloon purchase pool, and lowered the amount of doubloons earned thorugh current means (or removed them entirely and added the new ways to earn them) not reset them.
So you want them to be special; make them special. Dont remove them from people who've already earned them, regardless of how they did so.

  • @bleu-solo said in I already spent all my doubloons - GG I guess?:

@SweetSandMan As far as I remember you could never exchange Gold to Doubloons. Only Doubloons to Gold.

Pretty sure there was a conversion from Gold to Doubloons at one point. It's been years, but it was an option. With Larinna, there was the Gold tab, the doubloons tab, and the black market from what I remember.

A quick look on the fandom page confirms as much, and I'm sure I can find something in the archives of this forum if I look hard enough.

I think I remember it being more expensive to go from Gold to Doubloons than from Doubloons to Gold, but again it's been years and I can't remember.

  • @sweetsandman For what it's worth, I don't remember ever being able to convert gold to doubloons either.

  • I completely agree that the cost of the items needs to be carefully considered and be set at a reasonable price point. No one had any idea that it would necessary to have any number of doubloons on hand for something time limited.

Setting the precedent that currency is should be hoarded just in case something happens isn't great. No one should miss out for spending currency as intended.

  • @d3adst1ck said in I already spent all my doubloons - GG I guess?:

@sweetsandman For what it's worth, I don't remember ever being able to convert gold to doubloons either.

I mean it's definitely possible that I'm wrong. I don't remember it being available for long. And like I said, the Fandom page does make reference to it (even though that's not necessarily a perfectly accurate source either).

If it didn't used to exist, this would be a good opportunity to introduce it - even temporarily.

  • @sweetsandman

Yep, it's not really important if it did exist (I don't recall one way or the other for sure), it would still be a good idea here.

I'm still kind of annoyed at this whole situation and how Rare is going about it, especially in terms of the plans around limited time commemorative items. I still feel strongly that it's punishing players who used their doubloons as-intended, and that doesn't feel right at all.

I do think the idea of being able to convert gold to doubloons, even just for that month, would help a lot in terms of player sentiment and the overall mood in the community.

  • Depending on when you spent it, you might be able to ask support for some refunds. I got support to refund me for 2 items totalling 3500 doubloons that I bought shortly before the reset video was posted.

  • I'm predicting the following:

There will be an item worth a super low amount of doubloons, this is the commemorative item for everyone. Like maybe less than 1000 doubloons. Probably the eyepatch.

Then everything else will scale higher and higher. I assume no more than 10,000 doubloons for everything. They are not going to account for the people who have 50k+ doubloons. That is cool and all, you'll get everything.

I think they have to account for people who spent doubloons would have not if they have given more notice than 2 months they were going to reset this currency AND have a time limited cosmetic selection. They have to account for the paid alliance servers because now players have a reason to grind that currency before it is too late. They have to account for the newer players.

I think one item will be less than 1k doubloons.

then everything will be 10k total for all items. I think that would cover most people who can grind, been around forever, and something for new players to try for.
