Suggestion for Safer Seas: Hireable AI Crew for Solo Players

  • Hi Sea of Thieves team,

I’d like to suggest a small addition for Safer Seas.

For solo players, it would be great to have the option to hire a basic AI-controlled crew in order to sail larger ships (Brigantine or Galleon) in this mode only.
This wouldn’t replace real players or be fully efficient, just simple support (repairs, sails, occasional cannon fire).
A good example already exists in the game: Jack Sparrow helping to fire the cannons during the final battle against Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean Tall Tale.
Since Safer Seas has no PvP, this would not affect balance and would help solo players:

    • **Experience larger ships
    • Learn ship management
    • Enjoy the mode more comfortably**

Thanks for your time and for continuing to support the community.

    Fair winds.

    1. Rare stated multiple times Safer Seas will never have exclusive features (as in something that High Seas doesn't have)
    2. There is no need for any additional help in Safer Seas, since it's already meant as an extended tutorial, and since there is no risk of other crews. It's already comfortable more than enough.
    3. Experiencing larger ships and learning ship management go toe to toe. If you wanna learn how to play on a bigger ship, feel free to bring your friends or other people into a Safer Seas session. Brigantines and Galleons are not meant nor designed with solo-play in mind.

Before you come back with a response on point 1 how it should be added to High Seas as well, feel free to again read points 2 and 3.

Whether High Seas or Safer Seas, at the end of the day, nobody forces players to go solo. It's basically their choice to play the game on a harder difficulty, and Rare has always encouraged crew play, even on a Sloop.

And yep, I'm a solo player 90% of the time.

  • Safer Seas is meant to teach pirates the ropes and help them get up to speed so that, eventually, they'd be ready for High Seas. Navigating a sloop solo is essentially playing the game on hard mode, especially on High Seas. Being able to do this, though, ensure that you're able to play the game on your own without needing a crewmate. Having an AI party assist you with it would ultimately set you up for failure if and when you end up getting into High Seas.

Since your Solo...in Safer Seas. You should be able to solo a Galleon since, you have nothing to worry about besides maybe crashing. :p

How does having AI do everything, help you learn?

Give a Carrot. If SS has something, HS should also have it.

  • If this is implemented,

    1. the AI crew would be available in both safer seas and high seas.
    2. the AI crew's skills could be similar to burning blade crew (i.e. can repair, fire cannons, shoot guns, but can't bucket or helm or adjust sails),
    3. the AI crew should have respawn timer matching a normal player's respawn timer, and be unable to board. The AI crew should remain inferior to having actual cooperative player crew.
    4. If a player crew joins in, the AI crew should automatically despawn (i.e. it should only fill empty crew slots).
    5. there should be a switch off button - for players who don't like bots/AI crew.
      ..
This would make it easier for solo players to handle pvp from larger crews on the high seas.
This would also make it easier for friend groups with different/unpredictable schedules to sail together.
Instead of switching ship size when people want to join or leave (sloop > brigantine > galleon > brigantine > sloop), just start with a galleon and use AI crew before friends join, or after friends leave.
Also means more people might play hourglass galleon. :D

Players complain about cheaters and unsinkable ships.
Why would anyone wanna fight a player with AI crews? Burning blade is one thing. But still

Able to leave your ship as it is managed by bots isn’t good way to play. And players will demand them be able to attack on cannons as well
