Sea of Thieves Servers

  • When SoT servers are removed, instead of clearing the game. How about change it from a multiplayer to a Single Player/Team. Kinda like a permanent Safer Seas.

  • By "removed", I assume you mean at the end of SoT's live service life?

A lot of the physics calculations, as well as the wave simulations, are done server-side (this is why the physics fall apart after a disconnection). It would mean moving those client-side, which would likely severely impact performance.

There are also a lot of issues that were raised during the SKG initiative about the legality of transferring licences from third parties. If Rare owned all the tech they use, this wouldn't be a problem, but SoT is developed on a custom build of UE4 and does incorporate third party tools.

Another thing to bear in mind is that Safer Seas still has to run on the same server tech. For Safer Seas, four game instances run on each server (this is likely why lag is still an issue on Safer Seas).

I personally think we're likely to see one of two things happen when the live service ends: 1) the game will just cease to exist, or 2) Microsoft will have a subscription model added for continuing to play for an extended period, without any active support or development (we might see this subscription as an evolution on the planned one for multi-ship Safer Seas).

  • @realstyli Your pc/console is probably a 100x faster than a sot server instance and could easily run the serverside and clientside part of sot at the same time
